Toronto FC left short by call-ups
Other leagues pause, but MLS plays on despite World Cup qualifying games
LARRY MILSON

TORONTO — There will be no games in Spain's La Liga this weekend. Ligue 1 in France also is closed until next weekend.
It's the same in Germany with Bundesliga 1 and 2, and with the Scottish Premier League. The English Premier League has no games scheduled as well and the next notch down, the League Championship, also has a blank schedule.
In Mexico, the Primera Division is shut for the weekend. Anyway, you get the idea.
It is World Cup qualifying time, of course, with a batch of these important international fixtures scheduled in certain parts of the world this weekend. But Major League Soccer plays on.

Missing defence real nightmare for Toronto FC
'Every time I close my eyes I see one defender,' says TFC coach, minus nine players on Cup duty
MORGAN CAMPBELL

By now it's old news that World Cup qualifiers this weekend will deprive Toronto FC of nine of its top players, and have left the squad with just a lone defender – Marco Velez.
But TFC head coach John Carver says the scheduling conflict between MLS and FIFA has robbed him of something else.
His sleep.
"Every time I close my eyes I see one defender," Carver joked after yesterday's practices. "No left back ... no right back."
Hours later MLS deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis delivered the news that help is on the way.
Just not this year.

Canada faces stern test against Honduras
SEAN GORDON

MONTREAL — The long and tortuous road to world soccer's brightest stage passes through Stade Saputo tonight, where Canada's national men's team will face a stern test in the form of Honduras.
The match will be Canada's second of six matches — and second consecutive home game — in the third stage of CONCACAF regional qualifying for the World Cup of 2010, to be held in South Africa.
And if Canada hopes to qualify for the country's first World Cup since 1986, it would help to take maximum points on home soil.
"There's an urgency to get three points, but we need to be in a relaxed, yet focused mode," national team head coach Dale Mitchell said. "We're going to have to get to 10 points, if not more, to move on."

Toronto FC down 7 starters vs. Chivas

Spare a thought for Toronto FC coach John Carver.
Carver will be down nine players, including seven starters, when Toronto hosts Chivas USA on Saturday (CBC, CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca, 4 p.m. ET).
Three of Toronto's starting four defenders — captain Jim Brennan (Canada), Marvell Wynne (United States) and Tyrone Marshall (Jamaica) — will miss Saturday's Major League Soccer regular-season contest because they will be away on international duty with their respective national teams.....

Elements will not alter gameplan
By Ryan Johnston
SPORTSNET.CA

The weather, the surface, the concept of defensive soccer and the reputation of CONCACAF referees are all queuing up to conspire against Canada in its crucial World Cup Qualifier against Honduras on Saturday night.

But Dale Mitchell was his calm, collected self in crossing off each as a cause for concern ahead of kick-off.

To start, after a week of blue skies over Stade Saputo the forecast is calling for a steady rain on Saturday, bad news considering the pitch in Montreal has come under fire of late for giving way under the feet of players during practice. During a training session on Friday goalkeeper Pat Onstad was seen stamping down huge patches of sod that had come unearthed under foot.

Watered-down Chivas has no sympathy for TFC
By DEAN MCNULTY (dean.mcnulty@sunmedia.ca), SUN MEDIA

Don't look for Chivas USA to be crying over the laments of Toronto FC about losing nine starters to international duty before its Major League Soccer game at BMO Field today.
The California side is playing its fourth game in 10 days. As well, it is without Sacha Kljestan (U.S.) and Shavar Thomas (Jamaica), who will be at World Cup qualifiers.
Chivas also will be without five other players -- Jeese March, Carey Talley, Raphael Wicky, Alex Zotinca and Maykel Gallindo -- because of various injuries.
To add to the woes of Chivas coach Preki, both Atiba Harris and Sacha Kljestan will sit out today because of an accumulation of yellows cards from previous matches.
In the first game of this home-and-away series last Saturday, Chivas won 2-1 after scoring a goal in the final seconds of added time.

Canada makes final preparations for Honduras
National soccer team coach doesn't expect opponent to lay back

MORGAN CAMPBELL

Earlier this week, Canadian national team midfielder Julian de Guzman characterized tonight's World Cup qualifier against Honduras as a "do-or-die" situation
But on the eve of Canada's second match in the group stage of qualifying, to be played at Stade Saputo in Montreal, head coach Dale Mitchell said it's still too early to draw any conclusions about Canada's chances to advance.
Mitchell emphasized that he would love a win against a tough Honduran team, but with five games remaining over the next two months, he said Canada can stay alive if they manage not to lose tonight.
"There is an urgency to get the three points but we have to make sure we go into the game in a relaxed but focused mode," Mitchell said on a media conference call yesterday.

Canada under pressure
By BILL BEACON, THE CANADIAN PRESS
MONTREAL -- Canada will take a sense of urgency into its World Cup qualifying match against dangerous Honduras at Saputo Stadium tonight.
The three points for a win took on added importance after Canada was held to a 1-1 draw in Toronto on Aug. 20 by Jamaica, who are ranked as the easiest opponent in their four-team qualifying group with Honduras and Mexico.
"We should have had three points against Jamaica," Tottenham fullback Paul Stalteri said this week. "We have two home games to start the qualifying.
"That's a situation where ideally, you need to get at least four points."
It won't be easy against a Honduras team led by strikers David Suazo, now with Portuguese club Benfica on loan from Inter Milan, and Carlo Costly, and by classy midfielder Wilson Palacios of English Club Wigan and former Major League Soccer MVP Amado Guevara of Toronto FC.

From the Globe item...

"News media reports in Honduras have detailed unrest within the team — the result of a spat involving some high-profile players and the coaching staff — but Mitchell said the Hondurans are a potent opponent, divisions or not."

Maybe Amado is so content with his lot at TFC that his "locker room cancer" tendencies that we had heard so much about must be vented with his National team.

Pure speculation of course...anybody able to dig up any dirt on this? Most of the Honduran sites are in spanish obviously, which is like another language to me.

It would be great if Canada scores an early goal and maybe the Hondurans start self destructing...a straight up win would be even better.

Thanks again Denime.
