I had read afew weeks ago that Sporting or Benfica would be looking to pick him up.

He is 35 and would have to come over as a DP. the guy leads the portugese national team in all time goals.

with the calibur of play here in the mls this guy could play 2-3 years easy.

Unlike alot of names that have been rumoured to be coming over like Huckeby, Pauleta would be coming over healthy.

I know alot of people are going to say he would not be a good fit. to that i say.....

He would be the scorer we are missing.

thats 100% forsure.

U trade Cunningham and use a rotation of Dichio and Pauleta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauleta)

He is still in great shape

I was never a huge fan of his but i think this would be the perfect fit.

When i was at the game today my dad callled me and said for me to talk to Mo and tell him to go and get Pauletta.

I really am starting to think this team is a GOOD Striker away from being a TOP team in the MLS.

Our Midfield has made our Defence 100 times better.

Loving robert.

We could do a lot worse than Pauleta, but if he’s still being linked with Portugal’s big clubs, I’m not sure he’d come to the MLS even as a DP.

Definetely would be a great pickup.

I've watched him play over the years and yes he still has it, especially to play in the MLS.

Listen i'm not a Portuguese supporter especially with the rivalry with the Italians, but I will not let my bias come in the way of getting a quality striker. He would be a good fit for TFC.

Way better than the other names thrown out there (Huckerby etc) and definetly 500% upgrade on both Dichio and Cunningham. It would make TFC a complete team and perhaps the most feared :taz:team in the league. He is thae player that can bring us over the top.

A player with his calibre would have put in 3 goals vs. Columbus. Our strikers are killing us.

Do it MO pick up the phone. Long distance calls aren't expensive these days, just get a Rogers plan.

So if Landycakes played for TFC, scored lots of goals but was still a diver and complained all the time, you'd be happy?

^ I sure as hell would. I don't find Donovan to be a blatent diver as much as just a plain sissy. Which bothers me, but oh well, I like to win.

One thing I think that often gets lost in the diving debates here is that these guys often get mugged consistantly with brutal physical play. He gets hacked at a lot, the diving is his way of pushing back.

Honestly as much as people hate it, I put it on the same level as thuggery like hacking skilled players. No room in the game for either IMO.

Ahh his famous celebration...Azorean pride :)

I was thinking the exact same thing during yesterday's game and mentioned it to my buddy. We really lack a quality striker. Pauleta thrives in this sort of formation so he would most definitely fit in, much more than Huckerby. Not Brittish though.

Exactly. I don't get the hype of Huckerby. I will take footballer like Pauleta (if he wants to play for Toronto) in a heartbeat. He's a good DP signing, unlike Huckerby.

Pauleta was an incredibly talented player, whether he still it, I'm not certain. If he can regain or maintain his previous form, he will be incredible in MLS. Some of the goals he scores are simple unbelievable. I don't think he's coming though, he doesn't seem like the kind of player to go where the money is. I only see him coninuing his football in Portugal.

Only problem IMO is the turf. How long will a 35 year old last on it? One year?!

James Oliphant

35? You know, i've been pretty happy with the players this club has picked up, but can we please look to the long term instead of all these short term solutions. In 2 years we are going to be fucked because half our good players will end up retiring....

Marco2K
05-18-2008, 02:07 PM
Hey Nomad i am very sorry.

Maybe we should see if Drogba or perhaps C ronaldo wants to come play in toronto. Would that be better for you?

We would be very very lucky to get a player like Pauleta to come and join TFC.

Pauleta could be a realistic target and if we are looking at a striker with a guaranteed 8 to 15 goals a season then it's him.

Here is his career in france:

Time -----Team ----MP ---Min --G
2002 -----Bordeaux 37 --3297 --23
2003 -----Paris SG 37 --3136 --17
2004 -----Paris SG 35 --2712 --14

A great in-box striker and Portugal's all time leading scorer. That doesn't say too much but he did manage to surpass Eusebio. He really does have a fantastic scoring record. A major criticism that Portuguese have of him is that he struggled to show up against big teams, which is alright considering no MLS team can be considered 'big'. :) With Portugal, he played as a lone striker (not sure about PSG) so its not like he'd need much time to get used to the system.

As for the turf issue, if a mid 30's guy cant play 2 years on it, then no one would want to play on it, period. I don't think that would stop him from coming. He might prefer Portugal but if not there, then where else better than Toronto?

This is so true with this league. There will be other 30 year olds to replace Robert/Guevara/Dichio/Robinson in a couple years. Even the great young talents we got in Wynne and Edu will probably go and test out europe in a couple of years time possibly. You gotta strike while the iron is hot in this league and worry about who you will get to replace who you got now in a couple of years. Its going to be a vicous cycle and its sad but its true. Good thing is there seems to be no shortage of talent out there to step up for these replacements.

i just looked it up as an fyi as i didn't know either but:

at the 2002 FIFA World Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_FIFA_World_Cup). Pauleta scored a hat-trick against Poland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland_national_football_team), and ended up scoring three times in as many games, as Portugal was ousted in the group stage.
Although he played all but one game on the road to the Euro 2004 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_UEFA_European_Football_Championship) final, Pauleta did not score in that tournament finals.

2006 world up:after scoring the first goal for Portugal in the World Cup game against Angola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angola_national_football_team), he failed to find the net again during the tournament.

Who cares if he (and to be fair, a lot of Portugal's top players of his generation) has choked in big WC and EC games, I'd take him in a heart beat and he would destroy this league. With our mid field feeding him the ball, with DD playing his proper role as CF, and with wingers who would always be a threat to score themselves, Pauleta would score at least 20 goals (at least), and opposing teams would HATE trying to defend against us.

That's not really the case; top-level CCC players earn waaaay more money than MLS can pay, many on par or more than colleagues in the premiership, i.e. James Beattie, Kevin Phillips etc. Huckerby spent half his career in the prem, so he probably fits that mold as well.

Not that I worry; there's nothing to stop a team getting rid of a DP, as long as they sign him to terms that allow it, ala Denilson in Dallas. But I think we'd probably find that if he was a cheap DP, ala Gallardo or Emilio, he's well worth the money.

My understanding from a few different online sources is that the average wage in the Coca Cola Championship last year was about 475,000 pounds or about $900,000.

But historically, wages in the CCC have ranged all the way from about 1,500 pounds a week to about 10,000 pounds, with some special players getting ore than that.

So a guy like huckerby you'd be looking at, min, abotu $420,000, assuming he's not getting more, which might well be the case.

And I come from a Portuguese background, not English, my mother being a life long Benfica fan. And Nuno Gomes has been one of my favourite players for many years. I know what I'm talking about.

Dip Stick,

I saw him play live twice last year in Portugal. He isn't what he once was but still a legimate threat to be named to the Portugues national side. That tells you alot.

Before Dichio came to TFC I think he was playing soccer in the English beach league:o

Portugal is paper thin up front, any educated Portuguese fan will tell you that. Nuno Gomes being named to that team is no feat and he still only is because of his name. No one wants him there anymore, except girls, who apparently have as much knowledge on the matter as some members on the board. Every one of my hundred Portuguese buddies will say the same thing. He has nothing left to offer, "the cancer of Benfica". I really don't want to have to dig up Benfica match threads from another board. But if you're that willing to look like an idiot....

If Nuno Gomes would come here for a $300K then I would consider it, but other than that I agree with Bobo. Portuguese fans don't even like him, unless you're a Sporting or Porto fan and then you're glad he is on Benfica. The minute Benfica gets rid of him, the better off they'll be and this is coming from a Benfica supporter.

I would take him over Dichio, but not as a DP.

Portugal does not produce world class strikers.

She dives because she's a sissy and she's a sissy because she dives. I would never want to win games because of a player we had that fell over at the rate she does. Integrity and honour for the beautiful game.

Pauleta ready to retire

Portuguese striker Pauleta has revealed he is ready to retire if he fails to receive a tempting offer of a new challenge.
http://images.teamtalk.com/08/04/330/Pedro_Miguel_Pauleta_769720.jpg (http://images.teamtalk.com/08/04/800x600/Pedro_Miguel_Pauleta_769720.jpg) Pauleta: May retire

Pauleta is leaving Paris Saint-Germain after not being offered a new contract and had been hoping for a move to Benfica.
However, Benfica have not made an offer for the 35-year-old, who admits he may now hang up his boots.
"I still hope to get a good offer, but I don't believe it will finally come," Pauleta told Portuguese radio station TSF.
"If it had been a matter of money, I would have stayed in France, but the last season at PSG really wore me out mentally.
"I would need a real challenge to go on in my career, but I don't have one."

Just as an FYI...

Pauleta has ONE T...not two.

Pauleta or Nuno Gomes are miles better than Dichio. i love Dichio but lets not be ridiculous in compairing two guys that top the list of most goals scored for their country and most international appearances in international matches.

Pauleta has always been amazing at club level...and that is one DP we could use.

Nuno Gomes is not a striker, he needs to play with someone near him...but he can finish, he did it in this euro against Germany.
He is still a good player, but he needs the right setup. Last year at Benfica injuries and the style of play affected him, the previous year him and Miccoli together did amazing.

But lets not compaire apples with oranges.

Former Portugal international Pedro Pauleta has indicated that he will most likely hang up his boots this summer.
The Portuguese striker is currently a free agent following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain after a five-year stint with the French capital club.
The 35-year-old hitman has expressed his wish to represent one of the big three in Portugal -- FC Porto, Benfica or Sporting -- before his retirement on multiple occasions, having never played in the Portuguese first division.
But Pauleta, who is currently on vacation, concedes that his career is now over.
"I have finished my career, because only a really good thing would make me play another year," he told radio station TSF. "At the moment, I do not have that thing."
Pauleta, who has 88 international caps to his name, confessed that his wages would never impede his return to Portugal as he has turned down very lucrative offers from France, the Arabian Peninsula and the U.S.
The former Deportivo La Coruña striker added, meanwhile, that he was never approached by representatives from Benfica or Sporting, denying reports suggesting a move to one of the two Lisbon giants.

Who is to say we havnt already offerd him a contract! From the sound of things he only would have interest from the big 3 in Portugal....He'd rather hang them up then play elseware!

France relives spirit of '98, but death overshadows party

PARIS (AFP) — Zinedine Zidane pulled on the blue shirt of France one more time on Saturday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the country's 1998 World Cup triumph.
But the occasion at the Stade de France was overshadowed by the death of a young fan who was killed in a road accident on his way to the ground.
Zidane, who scored twice in the 3-0 win over Brazil in the World Cup final 10 years ago, scored the first goal of the night for the reunited French side on the hour mark against a Rest of the World team.
Emilio Butragueno had given the international select the lead in the 25th minute before Zidane's leveller.
Pedro Pauleta made it 2-1 to the world team before Ludovic Giuly equalised for France.
Croatia's Davor Suker and Bernard Diomede both scored in the last minute to ensure a 3-3 draw in front of a 75,000 crowd who also saw the World Cup trophy arrive by helicopter.
Aime Jacquet, who coached the 1998 World Cup winners, admitted that the evening had been overshadowed by the death of the 10-year-old fan who was born in the Cup-winning year.
A minute's silence was held in the youngster's honour.
"It's a catastrophe," said Jean-Pierre Escalettes, the president of the French Football Federation (FFF).

We could do a lot worse than Pauleta, but if he’s still being linked with Portugal’s big clubs, I’m not sure he’d come to the MLS even as a DP.

I'm not sure that he figures into any on the Big 3's plans in Portugal. I actually had this discussion with a buddy last night. I think he would make a decent DP and he maybe could be tempted here for less than DP-like money. I'm not sure how much he has left in the tank, but I figure he might bring more to the table in terms of sheer natural scoring ability than either Hucks or Dickov. He'll be a hero here in TO. This city has a strong Portuguese community comprised primarily of Azorians.

The Toronto market doesn't need old stars whether they are from England, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, etc. I would like to think we have sophisticated support to know that we don't need aging vets to prop up the Toronto market.

I mean look at the most successful MLS teams over the last few years - Houston Dynamo and New England Revolution. Do New England or Houston have a DP? How many non-NA internationals do they have?

I want to win now too, but at the same time I don't want to be like the old MetroStars bringing in guys like Matthaus, Donadoni, Djorkaeff, etc and even a coach like Queiroz and doing shit. Bringing guys in because the New York needed names!

I will agree that we sometimes put too much emphasis on acquiring a DP.

YOU ARE CRAZY.

Come on MO. Bring over a fellow Azorean Baby!!!

A player like Pauleta is not going to come to the MLS.

And anyway, an Italian would be better, Damiano Tommasi and Stefano Fiore are around the same age and available.;)

And obviously, a Messi or C. Ronaldo isn't going to come to MLS, that would be like Luca Toni deciding he wants to play in Serie B this season. But with time, the quality of this league is going to improve, and eventually we'll be able to attract better and better players.
