HARRISON, N.J. -- Before it was just another construction project, a nondescript piece of the Harrison Redevelopment Project.
But with the ceremonial erection of a steel beam Tuesday morning, the New York Red Bulls new soccer-specific stadium is now officially starting to take shape.
"It's something tangible that people can see," said Erik Stover, Red Bull New York managing director. "If they're driving by on (Interstate) 280 or if they're on the PATH, they see it coming out of the ground and you know it's a reality. Before today you look and it just looks like a dirt field. But over the next few weeks, next couple months, the building is going to start taking shape and there's really no turning back."
On Tuesday, the Red Bulls also announced a change in the name of the facility, which they hope will be open Sept. 2009. The stadium will now be called Red Bull Arena after being called Red Bull Park.
"That concept is something that's been around for quite awhile, to be honest. Now that we have complete control of our project and our own destiny, it's a name that's more in line with what Red Bull is doing worldwide with soccer, with our club in Salzburg, with the academy in Sao Paolo and Ghana and of course the club here and our academy," Stover said. "There's a lot of synergy there with what Red Bull is trying do worldwide."
The steel that was erected was the corner piece of the West building, which will house the home and visitor locker rooms, stadium offices, three clubs, 1,116 club seats, 30 luxury suites and press facilities. In about a month, structural steel will begin for the main seating bowl and roof.

Even though its way out in NJ, the stadium is apparently really close to a PATH station so unlike the Giants stadium, it is better served in terms of public transit.

Thank god, NO team should be exposed to play the beautiful game on a field designed for a different sport.

^ Bit small isn't it? And I got no idea why they'd fill the pitch up with a giant red bull.

Oh wait, that's the new stadium logo. Nevermind.

the New Jersey Devils moved to downtown Newark this year. From my understanding Harrison where Red Bulls are gonna be playing is a bit on the outskirts of Newark...i think.

they also said they are doing shuttle busses from New York City (probably Manhatten or somethin) to Red Bull park. So its sapose to be easier for fans to get to the stadium then Giant stadium currently is!

Harrison is a problem. All the backers of this are excited because it's right at the PATH station (NY's Go train equivalent) but Jersey is Jersey (unless it's NFL football you play).

It's another Toyota Park, in the middle of nowhere.

HA! september 2009 is not gonna happen. I'll put money on Philly's stadium being finished first

i still can't see them filling it... they've never had an average of 25000 fans in Giants stadium, even in the best year (their first). secondly, people in jersey don't support their pro teams as well as other cities (hockey, basketball). they don't even fill playoff games in an arena.

secondly, if New York gets a team (in the city limits, I mean) then you'll probably lose some fans who will side with the real NY team. they'll fill it for NJ vs NY games, but I seriously doubt they'll get 20000 a game for the other ones.

The new stadium in New York is a jewel, but not as nice as the stadium planned for Toronto:

All the backers of this are excited because it's right at the PATH station (NY's Go train equivalent) but Jersey is Jersey (unless it's NFL football you play). It's 4 stops and 20 minutes on the subway from the PATH station at the World Trade Centre; that may be easier to get to from downtown New York than BMO Field is from downtown T.O.

I wish them luck with it!

I was in that stadium just 2 months ago.
I was also in the one in Vienna.
Klagenfurt's stadium blows anything away I was in.
Its a great stadium with excellent views no matter where you sit.
And loud as fuck thanks to the roof.

Actually they won't have a problem filling it.
The issue will be more about how to expand.

:rant:They'd better fuckin' fill that stadium. It's a pathetic embarassment that an area of about 18 million people can only average 12,000 per match that doesn't have Beckham on the field. And, on top of that, the thought that MLS would add a second team to that area, while the first team can't draw flies if you covered the field with shit, would be downright insulting to other cities who love soccer and can't get into the league.

That stadium will be the jewel of the league when it's built, and they'll fill it considering it's so easy to get to by public transport.

I can't wait until they extend the subway in Toronto out to the Ex. (ha ha)

ya they only get 12,000 but thats because they play on a field covered in NFL gridlines everywhere. I dont know about you but i would never pay money to watch games played on that shit. ITs hard to even watch those games on TV. IF TFC played at a stadium like that i bet alot less fans would show up to watch.

Hope is fans in NY will start taking the team more serious now with a sick new stadium.

ya i herd its not that far from NYC. And good transportation. Easier to get to then Giant Stadium.

Wow -- it's moving along pretty fast -- maybe they actually will have it done for next season. Might be a mid-season move over there a la RSL.

I would hold my opinion about the stadium until it's built and people are going through the gates. Remember when the first concepts of BMO Field were released? Take all the images of the proposed RB Arena with a grain of salt.

I'm actually pretty stoked to see what the stadium looks like when finished. RSL's new stadium looks great too.

Makes it more likely that MLSE will upgrade our facility, as well.

all we need to make my dream BMO field would be to add a stand to the North End similar size to what the south end is now. Maybe adda 2nd deck to the south end. Then add a roof on all 4 stands, add some grass and it would be sick!
