The Los Angeles Galaxy have traded Carlos Ruiz to Toronto FC, sources told SBI on Tuesday evening. Details of the deal were not available yet. To make room for Ruiz on the roster, TFC has waived French midfielder Laurent Robert.

Here come the complaints...

Whatever, it's better than nothing. The only people we can get at this time of year are free agents and via trade in MLS, so, it's better than nothing.

I may actually look forward to going this Saturday... Won't touch tomorrow though!!!!

Do we really need more strikers? Who do we have now... an injured Dichio (still the best) Johann Smith, jarrod smith (not worthy of capitals) Ibby (still young) Barret (I like).... maybe MoJo heard the Team of Jimmy B's chant and is going for a full line of strikers. Finally we will score a goal! Too bad our Defence will suck and we'll still lose 23.67 to 1

Player coming in: This one is Paul McVeigh, a 30-year-old striker who has links to John Carver's former club Luton Town. He has played the bulk of his career at Norwich City. He trained with the team today and is on trial.

i hope he can revive his career here.. he didn't exactly do well in his last year with Dallas (fans were happy to see him gone) and then this year injuries and a lack of playing time have hurt him.

but he did score 24 goals in 26 games once (although that was in the old MLS, when Cunningham could score too). we'll see.

At this point, why not? Let's give him a chance.

The playoffs feel like they are slipping away at this point, so there is nothing to lose in giving Ruiz a chance to recapture his form of not too long ago. Worst case scenario, we are in the same boat we were in this morning. Best case scenario, he re-ignites our goal scoring, and we make the playoffs.

Welcome Ruiz. Here is hoping you earn a chant of your own.

He's a total win-at-any-cost guy right up until he thinks he can't win, when he packs it in. Thus the falling out in Dallas and the poor response to losing his place to Buddle during his injury.

But here he's coming into the noisiest and likely most appreciative venue in the league, with a chance to be the man, and to play with his close friend as a setup man.

This could be a huge deal.

Make no mistake, this is a gamble folks. He is either going to be a spectacular failure, or a big hit. There is no middle ground here.

If he cost us a song, I am ok with it. If he cost us a pretty penny, I am not.

He has the talent but he also has a bad history. And even as a Latino, I can't get over what he has done to the Canadians in the past, especially the dirty play in the last Gold Cup. He will have to win me over...but for now, I am indifferent and simply looking forward to the proof he provides to make up my mind.

Yes exactly Johann smith will be the new wingman...too bad for Robert though! Johann has nice pace, can burn defenders as we saw, so he will play on the left, with Ruiz and Barrett up front, Ricketts on the right, I guess Robbo and guevara in the middle. I think nana has earned a spot on D , with jimmy, wynne, and whoever else on D. The odd rosenlund and J.smith appearance.

That is 3 new faces on the strike force in a short period of time, if we're going to do something it better be now!

He could be an RPB! i.e. from many posts I've read today he'd fit right in maybe.. But in fairness, I think anyone who's been told they must pack-up, move house, move to a new city and play on a plastic pitch might be a bit well put out by the whole thing...

Well if we got him for just a draft pick (assuming not 1st rounder which I HIGHLY doubt) it seems like a pretty worthwhile gamble. Of course he hates the turf .... but get him in here and playing with his buddy Amado and hopefully he lights it up. From what I understand, the Galaxy will receive just a draft pick. A source with Guatemalan ties who is close to Ruiz said he is not thrilled about leaving Los Angeles and playing on artificial turf in Toronto.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/

Goff's updated that post, and it's not as good news as what was originally said:

"From what I understand, the Galaxy will receive a draft pick and a whole lot more: salary cap space to officially sign USA midfielder Eddie Lewis."

It's under the same link of his blog.

Does no one else think that this is the best the team has been overall? I mean, we got rid of Cunny and an old guy in Robert, we now have Ricketts and Jo. Smith running down the wings doing stepovers, Guevara and Robinson in the middle, we have 3 decent strikers to choose from plus Ibee up and coming. And if we add a solid CB, then we have a good back 4 too. And dont' forget all the first round draft picks we have now too. :hump:

How can people say Mo isnt' doing a good job?!?! Im' sorry, but at this point in time the top players in the world are not coming to MLS, so people need to stop judging signings etc with the top leagues. For the love of all that is holy we had to watch a Footy game played last week on a field with NFL lines on it. Do you think any players want to leave nice stadiums for that?!? I didnt' even want to watch it last week... (but, for some reason... it was the only thing on at Shoeless Joe's) :noidea:

Agreed, if we somehow add Tello and Andy Todd (the better one of the two  ) I think we'd be stocked up and looking at our best squad yet.

No reason to complain here. If McVeigh's rumour is true, expect to not see Dichio again. That's a straight replacement, but he'll fill the job nicely. Problematic for defenders because he plays hard, challenges for balls, gets stuck in, etc.

3 - A squad FULL of players who REALLY want to play for this city, for the fans, and have success for themselves THROUGH TFC
3 - Post-Season game (s) at BMO

for starters that is hahah.
IF RUIZ wants to be here, and shows us that he wants to be here, he is welcome. . if we get 2 games of fervrent play then a slowed down, hunger-less version afterwards. . I will be upset.

so let me get this one straight. Robert was probably upset because all of his crosses were going to waste since Danny got injured, so we waive Robert who is perhaps our best crosser and then we bring in a forward who is good in the air, and a winger that cant cross the ball that well. Is that about right?

Robert has always been problematic. Even in his prime. His legs are gone, his heart wasn't there and this move shows that we aren't going to put up with players, no matter how big they are, if they simply aren't performing.

BTW, who exactly can't cross the ball? Johann? You made that bold comment after less than 40 minutes of play? Wow.. you must be some serious scout in the footy world.

We do need the striker.
Dichio - You never know with concussions and probably best suited to come on as a sub to give our team a boost.
Johann Smith - Can play on the left wing of the midfield now that Robert is gone.
Jarrod Smith - Really is not a striker and shouldn't play unless we absolutely have to play him.
Ibrahim - Can go back to the youth team (where he should have been playing) or stay up as a 3rd or 4th striker depending on Dichio's health.
Barrett - Good 2nd striker. With teams focusing on Ruiz he really has a chance to thrive now.
We now have 3 or 4 legitimate forwards that we can play, that isn't too many. Now let's find a solid centre half to replace velez.

invictusTFC
08-20-2008, 08:56 AM
At 28 he can still bring a lot to this team. Ruiz just needs to rediscover his scoring touch. Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery. I'm hoping that these past few moves are enough to inspire Guevara as well. It is obvious that Guevara is the offensive turnkey for this team. He now has speed on both wings he can utilize. Having another Latin American player on the field might provide some much needed chemistry. I'll reserve my judgment on this deal until after I see Ruiz play.

So we're gonna keep a guy who is a liability defensively, has no legs and no heart and who earns about $350k just cuz he can cross a friggin ball. Yeah, you make a lot of sense... Robert was a mere shadow of the player he was at Newcastle. And even at St James Park his window of effectiveness was relatively short-lived.

I don't care how talented a player may be, if his head and heart aren't in the game then he is as useless as that guy they sold to Blackpool last summer...

In the end, that was the bottom line. Not to mention that it seemed that Guevara and Robert weren't on the same page. There simply wasn't enough room for both of them on the field. Robert simply didn't have the speed anymore to take the ball down the wing and beat defenders, so he would drift into the center leaving Jimmy Brennan pretty exposed at times. Guevara might benefit from more space. Now that Robert is gone, all set pieces will be his responsibility.

I'm really torn on this because we got one of the most prolific strikers in the league for a draft pick at the age of 28. On the other hand, he could turn into the next huge bust. Its a gamble, but one of the safer bets that Mo has taken, purely because of Ruiz's age. I really just don't want to see the diving out of one of our players. Guevara has turned out pretty well though. Just need to keep him focused the entire game. Ruiz might help that

I think this is premature for sure, but it is obvious that Johann has some real skills that will help the team. World class pace isn't something we see much of over here and he's got it. He beat a few men last week so hopefully he's well coached and works into the team well. We see it with Wynne. His pace allows him to make up for his positional and mental shortcomings several times a match. If he didn't have that pace, he would not be playing MLS level football.

Hate to bring up begative press but...

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) -- Eddie Lewis left with a gash above his eye that needed five stitches. Tim Howard was livid after Carlos Ruiz kicked him in the head. Each team had an ejection. Players yelled at each other after the final whistle ended a match with 40 fouls.
Yet, what mattered most was the United States began the semifinal round of World Cup qualifying with a victory on the road.
"We knew it was going to be difficult. We stuck together. It was a great team effort," U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra said after scoring on a header in the 69th minute to give the Americans a chippy 1-0 win over Guatemala on Wednesday night.
The match turned ugly in the 80th minute, when Ruiz fouled Howard. The goalkeeper and the forward yelled at each other.
"Carlos kicked me straight in my head," Howard said. "With Carlos you expect that. He is dirty. I wish I could say it otherwise, but he's played MLS for five years and I've seen him."
Ruiz, who did not speak with reporters after the match, apologized to Howard.
"That's what he does. I think you would rather have someone man up and say, `Look, I don't like you. I am going to kick you. I'm going to do all that.' You can almost respect it in a funny way," Howard said. "He has this way about him. He kicks. He punches. ... And he wants to come and be your friend. There is no place for it."
As for the goal, Bocanegra was unmarked about 3 yards out when he scored off DaMarcus Beasley's corner kick for his 10th goal in 59 international appearances. Beasley had entered the match three minutes earlier when a bleeding Lewis came off on a stretcher after his head collided with the head and a forearm from Guatemala's Jose Manuel Contreras when both leaped for the ball.
"The doctor says it's in my browline so I'll be in good shape," Lewis said. "I don't remember the incident that well, but I remember him standing over me. ... It was a pretty good hit."
Favored to make their sixth straight World Cup appearance, the Americans had tied all four of their previous qualifiers at Guatemala, where they had been 1-4-4 overall -- their only win in a 1988 exhibition. They are 4-0 against Guatemala in qualifiers at home.
"It was a very hard fought game, and for us a hard earned three points," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. "We have played some tough games in the last year, but none of them are qualifiers. To experience it and to win in that fashion is good for the group."
Bocanegra played a solid all-around game, disrupting Ruiz and Carlos Manuel Contreras from getting the crossing passes that could have led to dangerous chances. Howard made seven saves on a busy night, with 100th-ranked Guatemala outshooting the 31st-ranked Americans 16-9 before a capacity crowd of about 25,000 at Estadio Mateo Flores.
The U.S. team played a man short after defender Steve Cherundolo was ejected in the 60th minute for tripping up Freddy Garcia and receiving his second yellow card. Cherundolo will miss the Sept. 6 qualifier at Cuba.
Howard, and midfielders Pablo Mastroeni and Clint Dempsey also were given yellow cards, meaning they would be suspended if they get another yellow card in qualifying.
Guatemala coach Ramon Maradiaga was angry at referee Enrico Wijngaarde of Suriname, whose foul call when Ruiz kicked Howard nullified Guillermo Rodriguez putting the ball in the net.
"They annulled a goal that was ours, and that happens because they name referees that lack the preparation to direct a game of this level. But that is what FIFA does. Their decisions are unappealable," said Maradiaga, whose team was whistled for 23 fouls. "The referee today expelled Gustavo Cabrera as a way to level the game after expelling Cherundolo."
Notes: Trinidad and Tobago won 3-1 at Cuba int he group's other match. The top two teams advance to next year's regional finals in the North and Central American and Caribbean region. ... Michael Bradley and Maurice Edu played for the United States after returning from Beijing, where they were on the American team that was eliminated in the first round of the Olympics, which is mostly limited to players under 23.

I read a similar article earlier with the same quotes, and I have to tell you, Ruiz is scaring me. I really hope he doesn't play like this, and I mean in terms of his cheap retaliation, not his actual play, when he comes here. It's going to be REALLY hard to support someone like that. And what's with all of the games in that region turning into somekind of street fight? Apparently the "beautiful game" is only played in select countries.

Carlos was going "after" the ball but Howard got to it first and Ruiz kicked him in the head which was full foot away from where the ball was. It wasn't pretty. I noticed Carlos got into really good positions, but MAN is he out of shape. I mean he doesn't even look like the guy FC Dallas had. It could turn out pretty bad if Winsper can't get him back into shape quick.
