U.S. Men's Olympic Team Falls to Nigeria, 2-1

BEIJING (AP) -- Promise Isaac and Victor Obinna scored Wednesday to lead Nigeria over 10-man United States 2-1, earning a place in the quarterfinals of the Olympic soccer tournament and eliminating the Americans. Isaac scored in the 39th minute with an easy tap-in off Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi's centering pass, and Obinna curled a right-footed shot into the top of goal in the 80th.
The result, combined with the Netherlands' 1-0 win against Japan, eliminates the U.S. from the tournament quarterfinals.

They can hang around for a few more days before they come back. Edu can stay the whole time. Wynne on the other hand, he needs to come back!

Why can't they be back for Sunday? There is aguy for belgium, Felliani, who left Beijing Saturday and is playing tonight for Standard de liege against Liverpool. Same amount of days...

But less travel distance no?

Not so much, as the flight goes over the pole. At least that's how I understood it.

Half the distance I would say.

Edit: Wooster may be right.

I thought they'd go through Vancouver and such.
Still glad they'll be back soon.

They might want to stay aronnd for the closing ceremonies and march in it with the US, who knows, just a thought, a lot of athletes like to stay around once there events are over just to take it all in and experience the Olympics, going to other events, supporting their US teammates.

Meh. Edu has been shit for us this season while Wynne has been okay. It really doesn't matter to me if they play against Redbulls or not.

Disappointing end for USA, they probably should have gone through instead of the Dutch. Once again their tactical awareness and technique lets them down against the big boys.

On one hand they have to be happy that Kleijstan, Adu, Bradley and Wynne look like real players and they fought the Dutch well, on the other hand, they once again failed to do much in a big international tournament due to stupid individual errors. USA Soccer is certainly building foundations with MLS, NCAA, massive youth participation, etc., but I wonder if they should just bite the bullet and import a top European staff wholesale for their U-20 and U-18, because they seem to have a hard time coaching elite technique and tactics into their players. The seem to be among the best in the world at the U-18, U-20 level, but their players fail to make the jump to elite status after that.

While this made me feel warm and fuzzy, I think MLS/TFC might have something to say about it. Since, y'know, they pay their wages and everything.

^^Rumor has it the ceremonies aren't as great in person as they are on teevee anyway :)

Back to work fella's.

I didn't get to actually see any US games. I wonder how Edu looked as a CB. Better than in Vancouver I hope.

Anyone notice?

i didn't see the games either (too early for me). from what I've read, americans who watched said Edu was actually quite good at CB. Some were really praising Marvell Wynne too. In any discussion of the "future" of the men's team Edu and Wynne were the core of that.
