Gaudet ready to seize opportunity
Toronto midfielder ready to begin MLS career
Derek Gaudet is determined to take his chance, after being handed a developmental contract with Toronto FC. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has represented Canada at under-17 and under-20 levels and impressed during a trial at BMO Field early this month. "It's great to be here at such a professional club," said Gaudet. "It's a very good place to be and I'm excited. It was a lot of pressure having to prove myself, but I love the game and I just tried to relax and settle down a bit and get some good touches on the ball. All of the experienced pros here are great and they have been giving me pointers on my game. I want to keep working hard and keep improving."
Toronto FC Academy Head Coach Nick Dasovic has worked with Gaudet before at international level. "Derek's been part of the Canadian National set up for 3 or 4 years now," said Dasovic. "I had a few camps with him when I was working on the Under 20s with Dale Mitchell. He was a little bit young when he was at the camps, but he had a lot of technical ability and qualities that we saw."

Returns, reserves make TFC strong
In absence of veterans, young Reds show progress
Toronto FC will be missing a minimum of three regulars on Sunday against the New York Red Bulls, but this actually counts as progress for the thin-rostered Reds. Some of the players missing from last Saturday's 1-0 win against the Colorado Rapids will be available for the New York game as TFC soldiers ahead without Amado Guevara (suspension), Maurice Edu and Marvell Wynne (U.S. Olympic team). Defender Marco Velez will return after serving a one-game suspension for amassing two bookings against FC Dallas on August 3. Midfielders Laurent Robert and Tyler Hemming are also expected to be available after suffering minor hamstring tweaks during last week's training.
"[Robert] trained today, he trained yesterday, so he comes into the squad for the weekend," said TFC head coach John Carver. "So we're getting back to full health. The good thing about it is these injuries Laurent's had and Tyler Hemming, who trained today [has had] -- they've not been serious injuries. It's been more of a precaution just to make sure that they're not out for the rest of the season, basically. So we manage the players and make sure that they're right and they're off the treatment table and ready to go for the weekend."
