Carver wants defensive improvement
Toronto set for clash with the Rapids

Toronto FC coach John Carver is demanding defensive improvement from his team as they prepare to face Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday (kick off 4:00 p.m. live on Rogers Sportsnet). The Reds are looking to improve their form on the road where they have won just once this season and conceded 20 goals. "We have to defend better away from home," said Carver. "Before last Sunday we had conceded two goals at home and 20 away, so something is clearly not right. We need to make sure we improve and make sure we defend properly." The Reds will have to make a change in defence with Marco Velez missing the game through suspension. With Olivier Tebily leaving the club recently, Todd Dunivant injured, and Marvell Wynne away on international duty, Carver's options at the back are limited. "The defence picks itself, because I only have four defenders to call upon," said Carver.
Toronto are also without Amado Guevara through suspension and Mo Edu on international duty. Tyler Hemming and Laurent Robert missed training on Thursday with injury. "We've got issues, but I'm not going to use that as an excuse. We will be well prepared and I can assure you that the players we put on the pitch will give everything for the cause."

TFC deals lacklustre Cunningham to Dallas
Toronto manages to dump big salary, gets third-round draft pick

MORGAN CAMPBELL

The deal took a while to complete, but Toronto FC and Jeff Cunningham each got what they wanted when the team dealt the striker to FC Dallas yesterday.
Cunningham, a part-time starter with a wayward scoring touch, gets a fresh start in Dallas. He ranks third among active MLS players with 99 goals, but his career in Toronto is defined by the shots that didn't go in.
Toronto, meanwhile, gets rid of Cunningham and his $257,500 (U.S.) in guaranteed salary.
But dumping Cunningham's salary isn't the only benefit of the deal for TFC. They also receive Dallas's third-round pick in next year's draft.
TFC director of soccer Mo Johnston said yesterday that Cunningham's price tag made moving him difficult, but thinks the trade is best for both the player and the team.
"When people's salaries are high it's difficult to get trades done within the league," Johnston said. "But Jeff can kick-start his career because it's been at a standstill."

TFC sends slumping Cunningham packing
By LANCE HORNBY (lance.hornby@sunmedia.ca), SUN MEDIA

Approaching the stretch drive of the MLS season, Toronto FC was in need of a shakeup.
Whether losing a veteran forward in the midst of a team scoring slump is the right move remains to be seen, but career 99-goal man Jeff Cunningham paid the price, traded to FC Dallas yesterday for a third-round draft pick.
"You have to look at his numbers ... we needed more goals," manager Mo Johnston said yesterday. "We have to get things back on track."
It's also a salary dump as TFC was on hook for $257,500 US, accounting for about 10% of the team cap.
Cunningham had just three goals in 16 games this season, but TFC has been out-gunned 14-7 in a team slide that began in mid-June and has stretched to a record of 0-7-4 in MLS and non-league games.
The deal came on the eve of a road game against the Colorado Rapids that coach John Carver deemed vital to getting back in the wild-card playoff race. The candid Carver said he feared a season of so much promise in the spring was in danger of being washed away by a stormy summer of defeat, scoring droughts, injury and suspensions.
Since taking a record of 6-3-2 into June and a 14-12 goals for and against mark, TFC's only win came against the Rapids at BMO Field on June 14. Getting blanked 2-0 at BMO by Dallas last week, despite questionable officiating and finishing that game with nine men, had a sobering effect on Carver.
