I think IF the deal goes down, there will be draft picks exchanged and we pay half his salary. I think there is very little chance that we get Serioux or any player in return for his services. Also, this more than likely means we will sign Dave Simpson as well.

Never a bad plan for a bad team. If we get enough first rounders (and three should be enough, if they are high enough) then we should hopefully strike gold on at least one, silver on the others. A strong core of young talent to lure the vets in with. I can't fault Mo for this at all -- especially the way in which we got the two extra picks. Pure robbery.

Roogsy
08-08-2008, 08:26 AM
The thing is...looks like he is doing a pretty good job setting us up for the future. And for that I applaud him.

But he seems to be struggling with landing us vets...and that is where my worry is. Right now, we need a bonafide striker and we can't sign anybody OR their mother.

Flashman

Goff is reporting that LA Galax$ki are interested in Cunningham. :)

Roogsy
08-08-2008, 09:51 AM
Bullshit...why would they need another striker, an incompetent one at that?

That team desperate needs to shore up the back line. Everybody and their mother knows that. If Lalas really is looking for another striker, they need to fire him right away.

*As you know, forward Jeff Cunningham is on his way out of Toronto, his relationship with John Carver irreparably damaged. Strange as it may seem, I am hearing Los Angeles, which already has Landon Donovan, Edson Buddle and Carlos Ruiz, is apparently interested. Doesn't make any sense, I know. Perhaps Donovan or Ruiz is on the way out? I'm curious to see how this one unfolds.

This would be the last place I think would want Cunny. The only way this trade works is if we get Ruiz in return so LA can afford Cory Gibbs. They need to unload salary and fast otherwise it will drop to the next team (the Revs acquired in the Noonan trade). At this point, I would take Ruiz and hopefully we can opt out at the end ot the season if necessary.

Roogsy
08-08-2008, 10:01 AM
Hmmm...the fans here are not too crazy about Ruiz...but I personally wouldn't mind seeing what he could bring here.

Ruiz is a bit of a headcase though...

Goff just modified his comments a bit on cunny.

Cunningham, Ruiz, TFC, L.A.

I am going to backtrack on that Jeff Cunningham-to-L.A. speculation from this morning. Upon further investigation, not only is there nothing to it, there is apparently very little interest around the league and he is exploring opportunities outside MLS.
However, I do hear that there has been, in fact, communication between the Galaxy and Toronto about Los Angeles forward Carlos Ruiz. The Galaxy has been trying to move him for quite some time and TFC, which just acquired forward Chad Barrett from Chicago and can't rely on Cunningham, might look for additional firepower for the stretch run.

I don't advocate diving, thats for sure. I don't understand why players need to dive needlessly all over the pitch. However, if Ruiz comes here and one of his dives results in a game winning pk in our favor, I might find it acceptable at that point in time... lol

I like the amount of draft picks we have for next year, i think Mo did good in that regards, I think he will slowly build us into a power house, if we keep on bringning in semi talented youth that hopefully wont go to europe ....ahh fuck i cant wait till tomorrow, we better beat colorado again.

We need a striker! So we trade one of ours? Granted an unproductive one, but tell me there making room for someone else or Dichio's coming back at least. Mo can't be giving up on the season while still close to a playoff spot. Well at least it's not Serioux, he and his finger can rot in Dallas.

It doesn't seem to mean that a new striker is in the bag- just that the transfer window is closing soon and Mo had to dump him before that.

I don't know what pissed me more- his long stretches of slacking or the hustle I saw against Dallas which only came about when he knew he was a goner.

whenever i watch him i just sit there thinking "ok, he's gonna break out of this funk at some point" then "some point" got to "some further point" and then "some yonder point."
he had a million chances to produce...but i still got a weird feeling he'll get it done.
that said, toronto fc gave him opportunities aplenty and it's hard to bash the move.

I wasn't getting that feeling. every time he had a decent run I just said in my mind "this won't go anywhere". When Smith or Dichio get downfield my mind is open and I can believe anything might happen. With Cunny I was resigned to the fact nothing would happen. So I wasn't getting as excited when he had the ball.

Mo isnt going to get anything significant done by next friday, and Cunningham will not up his game and net a bunch of goals for Dallas. Its simple Math

I am reposting that I am not a Mo "basher" because I have never once said fire him. Shit he is only one person, he cant do it all himself, I think its just he is too new at the managerial side of things and really hasnt shown anybody that he can forsee contingencies. If he truly had some good names of potential players coming in, somebody somewhere would have the rumor posted. David Simpson? Never heard of him. Next friday will come and go, nothing new and our biggest excitement will come from the hope that Dichio will be back. I am just bracing myself for the sugar coated back peddling, damage control bullshit he and his cronies will feed us for the rest of the season. I love this team and my support is unwaivered towards our players, win or lose, I just dont like being fed bullshit. I have never experienced this rhetoric from any other team I have supported in any sport

ya, dallas gets a guy who's washed up, a striker who can't score. not sure how that means toronto gets "screwed" in this trade. that's about the value of a 3rd round pick. If anything, we got more value, since cap space and roster spots devoted to a guy who can't score are valuable all by themselves. many people said TFC would have a hard time giving the guy away.
LA dropped Xavier, getting a roster spot but no draft pick or cap space in return. They had to eat the contract.

honestly, would you pay $100,000 for 12 games of Cunningham?

i don't care if cunny scores his 100th.
he had ample opportunity to do it here and failed. It's not like he's gonna end his career at 99 goals. he'll luck out and nick a few before years end.
prob with cunny was his overall performance. getting to 100 goals means nothing but empty symbolism when you started the season at 96.

now, if he goes on to score 10 goals with Dallas this year, or next year has 10 or more, then Dallas got a steal. Given his history tho, that's a very dangerous bet.

Good riddance

Cunny had every chance to make himself a hero in Toronto with limited striker option we had, yet his lazy antics just drove us crazy.

Players would love play time that Cunny had chance to.

I often wondered, when his cold streak started last year, if we were all too hard on him. I think so; remember when he first got here, before the hernia, and was partnered with Dichio. It was like they had a natural connection (probably from years of playing with another good target man, McBride.)

Then the hernia. When he came back it was like he was pouting every time he played. I don't know what happened, exactly, to turn him into such a miserable prick, but it was obvious he wasn't -- come hell or high water -- going to get that goal in Toronto. It was almost like the fates were telling him to get the fuck out of dodge.

This happened to him before; the first time McBride left Columbus to go on loan at Preston, Cunningham went into the toilet and finished the year with only two goals.

I should also note that if you average those 99 goals over his career, he's only ever averaged eight per year, and most of those came when the league was weaker than it is now.

Cunny will do well with Dallas because he will TRY his ass off for the first few games and maybe score some goals. There are only 13 games left. Dallas will probably hate his guts next year when they find out what he's really like long-term. Kind of like the Nets are finding out about Vince Carter (both talented useless athelets)

Are we on the hook for his guaranteed salary or is FCD? I thought the deadline passed already.

According to 3rd Degree sources, Toronto will pay a portion of Cunningham’s contract in the “six figure” range. According to the MLS Players Union, Cunningham is making a base of $245,000 this year (http://www.mlsplayers.org/salary_info.html). Given that Cunningham’s contract will be prorated for the rest of the year, the cost outlay by FCD is minimal.
Our sources also tell us Cunningham’s contract is not guaranteed past the end of this season (all MLS contracts are guaranteed the rest of this year as the season is past the guaranteed date) so this could be a two month rental player move if FCD so desires.

Toronto FC deals forward Jeff Cunningham to Dallas for draft pick

TORONTO — Toronto FC are sending striker Jeff Cunningham to FC Dallas in exchange for a third-round pick in next year's MLS SuperDraft.
Cunningham joined TFC from Real Salt Lake in May 2007 and recorded three goals for Toronto that season. This year he started seven of 16 games and logged 747 minutes, scoring only three goals.
Cunningham is the fourth leading goal-scorer in league history with 99, but has struggled to regain the scoring touch he showed in the 2006 season when he led the league with 16 goals, earning him the MLS Golden Boot.
The Jamaican-born forward's last goal for FC came almost most two months ago (June 8).

I suppose the selling point of the trade is that it pounds home the message first delivered when Andrea Lombardo was shown the door a few weeks back: Underachievers can do it elsewhere.

And I suppose that in a way the trade of Cunningham is not only a message but an ultimatum. If Johnston does not capitalize on the open roster spot and the cleared out salary this season or by the beginning of next, then he will have to abide by his own harsh rule regarding underachieving.

But still (and I am sure this will be an unpopular statement), seeing Cunningham finally crack the century mark in goals would have been a nice bit of TFC folklore.

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but From MLS news:

FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman is glad to add a forward like Cunningham, who has a knack for finding the back of the net.
"Jeff's going to help the team tremendously because now we'll have two legitimate goal scorers with him and Kenny Cooper," Hyndman said. "You win games by scoring goals and Jeff's a proven goal scorer. We feel this could be one of the strongest attack duos in MLS."

Why couldn't we have gotten the 16 goal, 2006 cunny?
