I wish Bob Bradley and his staff had access to the goal highlights on Apple TV. If they did, they would see that 90% of MLS goals fall into three categories.
Penalties,
Set Pieces, and
Open play with 4 touches or less
From the time an MLS team crosses the centre line (or gains possession) most goals happen before 4 players have touched the ball.
MLS is not La Liga. Trying to pass the ball 20 times as you slowly move closer to the net does not work here. It may not be pretty but this is a fast break league of balls over the top and charging up the field. TFCs goal on Saturday was a perfect example of this. Bernardeschi was the only player to touch the ball in Atlanta’s half of the field.
Bradley has to recognize what works and do that. Trying to play a possession game in the other team’s half has not worked in the last three years and is very unlikely to work this year. Watch the tapes, learn from them and play a style that produces goals in this league.
