The Columbus Crew announced today that it has acquired former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Teamer Pat Noonan from the New England Revolution in exchange for the Crew’s natural first-round selection in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft and allocation money. Additionally, the teams traded spots in the current 2008 allocation standings – with Columbus moving into the 10th spot and New England moving to third – and agreed to considerations regarding 2009 allocation rankings.

We have a ton of picks stockpiled and money? Why not bring in someone who's actually proven he can score in this league?

it would have been a nice move, but NE got a hell of a lot for a player that has never scored more than 11 goals in a season (and that was 4 years ago) and he only scored a combined 8 goals in the last two years inthe league. Im an optimist, i still think we can do better or find a Canadian that can provide the same output.

Because that would have been smart? lol.....It's probably the pitch issue again. Just seems that quality players don't want to come here becuase of the turf....that is probably why were losing out on these signings and trades.....

his best seasons were 2003 and 2004. he hasn't come that close to matching that since.
at age 28, he's not the answer. Chad Barrett is contributing basically what Noonan does these days, and Barrett is 5 years younger and probably a lot cheaper.

I think the reason they didn't trade a 1st round pick to NE is because of the same reason people tend to mention all the time, and that is to keep as many 1st rounders as they possibly can to deal with Seattle for the pick that get's us that Canadian kid.

Also, in my non FM specialist opinion, other then Twellman, Joseph and maybe Matt Reis, I don't really see any stars in NE, I think solid players like Noonan, Ralston, & Parkhurst are more the product of a solid system put together by the coach Steve Nichol.

I'm sure Noonan will do ok with Colombus espically playing with Schedetto, but the fact that Noonan couldn't cut it in the Norweigan 1st division brings up some serious questions in my mind. Supposedly Noonan wanted back in the MLS, but also, supposedly his club wanted him gone just as much acording to mlsrumors.com

I know, not exactly the best source.

Someone mentioned elsewhere that Noonan only scores in the NE system. I don't particularly think he was worth as much as Columbus paid for him...and who knows how badly he may have bombed in our system had we paid that much. Let's not freak out over someone who couldn't even make it in Norway or whatever...

hmm giving up as much as the Crew did to get a guy who's scored less than cunny has in the past 2 years is smart? I wouldnt call Noonan a quality player either. i'd rather have Barret + a pick for something we were forced to give up anyway

I never called him a quality player....just that is why we are having a tough time getting anyone.....field turf!!!! It's sad cause I pretty sure that anyone would want to play here.

What are we splitting hairs here?

I was on the turf @ BMO two times in the past week. I am one of the worse players around, (And one of the worse referees according to Shaughno:p) but I wasn't too impressed with it. Although I don't think it was groomed, but it was far from what I expected.

Doesnt NE play on the NFL type turf? More akin to what NY or Salt Lake play on? Our turf is FIFA approved; I dont think NE, NY or SL's is.

MLSE Board decided to save our allocations in case Mats Sundin comes in

turf apparently not an issue for him, skates work better on it anyway
