So looking at RSL's stats on whoscored, they have similar numbers to us in many categories. They're more direct in their passing and rely on both freekicks and longer passes to setup second opportunities in the box -- so they have quite a few junk goals and by winning the second ball.

We possess and pass the ball better and use it on the ground better, which is sort of contrary to their defensive set, which is designed to shut down more direct long-ball teams, so we might have an edge there.

I'd settle for a point on the road here.

I can see a draw but we're going to have to start figuring out ways to get more goal scoring opportunities because RSL probably won't allow much playing Mastroeni-ball if we do our usual and try to walk it in.

Matches my thoughts that they needed to ease in Priso slowly, after a long layoff and some stamina issues last year before injury.

Makes you wonder if the ankle is 100%. That could certainly explain the calf issue.

Fully expect us to go for it off the bat & then fade after 60 minutes - inevitable mountain game approach.

So...Bono howler in 2 hours?

Away games in the west are throw aways - if we get a point, that's good. No yellow, no injuries, learn a bit. Nothing else.

Same lineup. Interesting. Kerr makes the bench; Priso still hurt; Mavinga not deemed fit (or good?) enough for Bon Bradley.

He made some comments in Instagram about being not dealt with honestly or something. I suspect BB has a zero tolerance policy for that kind of stuff.

He's a great dude and a good defender but his emotional issues have been a problem throughout his career.

I suspect BB also has a zero tolerance policy for people's personal issues, which is less pleasant -- I'm not really a fan of ruthlessness in any venue -- but not surprising. He wants zero disturbances outside football.

Auzzy
04-09-2022, 07:45 PM
Wow Shaffelburg redeems himself, what a play that was. Beautiful finish by Kosi, and so smart and trusting of Pozuelo to leave it for Kosi who had the better angle.

There's gonna be more goals tonight. The track meet style isn't great for TFC at altitude, they're going to have find a different style in the 2nd half.

Salcedo's injury doesn't look good. Mavinga may get a chance to redeem himself before the end of this game. But too many left-footed CBs?

I edited out my "idiot Caldwell" comment because I thought I maybe got it wrong, but yes it was obviously the arm/elbow.

Too bad, this time Pozuelo didn't leave it for Kosi, or left it too late for him to be able to react.

Only issue is we already have two players attacking well on the left side. Insigne will obviously be better, but we're more thin on the right side, especially with real wing or fullback play.

Poor from McNaughton and O’Neill as they dropped the line a step early allowing Kreilach as an unmarked trailer. Just poor defending there.

if they hold the line a step longer, two RSL players are offside.

Auzzy

Thaaaat sucks.

Shaffelburg obviously left them too much time to cross, and MacNaughton misjudged the header. But Kosi completely stopped for no reason and left MacNaughton to deal with two RSL players in a very dangerous position.

Too loosey-goosey by TFC. Hopefully Bob Bradley says the right things at half time.

Yup and he really doesn't take Meram seriously enough, leaves him too much space, lets him walk into the box before confronting him etc.

Wow Meram is only 33, he's been killing TFC for a long time.

OgtheDim
04-09-2022, 08:25 PM
how do you defend a perfect cross / bit of aligned stars ?

You

a) don't let the cross come in

b) cover the players around you so your defensive partners don't have to cover 3 guys

I am going to bang on Thompson as a defensive liability until he stops being one - there is nothing I can't stand more then a player letting opposing players get in & just watch the play develop

Very interested to see if Mavinga plays next game. Something is definitely brewing there. Salcedo was mostly awful tonight and will miss the next game.

Other games TFC have been half decent defensively. Tonight even after they tied it at 2-2, they refused to set up any kind of decent defensive shape. That RSL cross to the back post near the end, why was Bono all alone back there? No other TFC player anywhere near that side of the goal, after they repeatedly got exposed at the back post throughout the game.

If nothing else we are doing this with kids playing all over the pitch - that’s a win for the future of this franchise on so many levels - eventually if we can make #4 a part time player and find a young decent (cheaper?!) goalie before the year is up, this will be a huge transition year from fielding the aging roster that has been the hallmark of TFC since 2017....

Two 19 year olds scored for TFC today, when has that ever happened?!; Shaff set up the first one too, another kid.....whatever people may say about Bob Bradley, he’s come in and let the kids have a shot and we are finding some young talent that would never have seen the pitch before; adding in CPL guys too is also great....

Michael Bradley has been playing well, all year. Significantly better than last year. Gets beat for pace now and then but is calm and controls the ball well. He’s as much of a revelation (in a different way) as some of the kids.

He got roasted on a few plays tonight, including a really weak effort at tackling Meram, which he missed, then Meram scored. That play had nothing to do with pace. His passing is ok but he's a defensive liabilty now. We need a real #6.

that play was a mess from the moment Shaff turned over the ball, but yes, he overcommitted. But he’s been very good indeed all year, including this game - exactly what we need if we are having a youth movement.

When it went to VAR I thought for sure that goal was going to be called back. Good on the referee to actually get that one right. Nice point in a tough location.

It’s impressive we’re picking up these points with such an inexperienced and young team. Bob’s doing a great job.

Salcedo has to be smarter. You can't kick that high.

What is that now, 2 red cards in 6 games or something?

Great result for this club in that environment.

Here's the vdeo of the
Mavinga Bradley incident
https://i.imgur.com/VMg5ALp.mp4

I had completely forgotten about that moment until your post. I was wondering if I was seeing something in those quick few seconds on camera.

Unfortunately it's a situation that happens with every club in team sports. Impossible to keep all players content happy, and in some cases you can fault the players.

Otherwise, what a game from the kids on the road. Seems like we're witnessing live TFC's youth movement. Thompson, Nelson, etc. When Achara and Akinola are both back fit and healthy.

We are on a positive, upwards trajectory it seems.

Not to be argumentative or anything, but I'd just like to point out that that angle is deceptive. He could be waving his arms at Bradley, in the foreground, or he could be waving it at something that just happened on the field.

We're just assuming it was some sort of spat.

Taking into account how we always fail in Utah, I’ll take that. Another generally positive performance.

Schaff will need to continue to improve as his mishaps led to both goals. Great to see Thompson and Nelson get rewarded with wonderful goals. Hope that gets their confidence up.

I didn’t see anything in the Mavinga situation. Looked to me like he was calling out the refs and if Anything Bradley was having him calm down and go back to the bench.

Osorio is our MVP so far this season.

By far the best most consistent player on the pitch - a true box to box who stepped up his game in response to CanMnt demands & has transferred that to league play. Going to enjoy this season with him because if he plays like this in Qatar, he will be gone next year.

He's on a different level this year, no doubt. Age is working against him, though, as he's probably not going to make it at a premier-league level, there's just too much competition from younger talent, and the levels right below that are usually looking for long-term sell-on value.

Contract year Osorio is absolutely on another level.

I agree with you re: Premier league (or maybe more pointedly, Europe). His athleticism is probably the only reason he wasn’t scooped up a long time ago.

Given how much he's improved his strength and speed since 2017, you have to figure it's another impact of development in this country being so poor for so long.

Look at youth developing here a decade ago; even when fit and muscular they look malnourished compared to the kids in premier league and championship youth programs. In 2014-15, he still looked like a skinny kid and he was NOT quick.

They've placed so much more emphasis there on the complete player -- physical peak, tactical awarness, technique, mental drive and strength -- compared to the typical youth program here. Now, we're starting to catch up via elite programs but it'll be another decade or two before MLS players look like their European equivalents (and frankly, given the abundance of skill, drive and population to choose from in North America, it'll probably be the last hurdle in becoming a true top 10 league).

Based on the development of homegrown talent, MLS is not a top 10 league yet. Based on the overall calibre of play in MLS today, I think there is a valid argument to be made that it could be considered a top 10 league, or very close to it.

MLS will not be a top 10 league until the powers that be accept that it is possible to do so by spending top 10 league averages in salary - that will require better TV money then they are going to get.

I would settle for being as fun to watch as Serie A.

I get this about Osorio and athleticism but how much more athletic is a guy like Jorginho of Chelsea over Osorio I’m just talking about pure athleticism here. I don’t think it’s always about athleticism because there are many players playing in top leagues like a guy like Jorginho of Chelsea that are no more more athletic than Osorio.

It's the catch-22 of MLS. You need better players to get the views. You need better views to pay for the players without going under like the NASL.

I think Osorio could do a job for a midtable La Liga side. A Vigo or Osasuna might provide him that last chance to go to Europe. I just think he'll want to go this summer before the World Cup starts.

My theory is TFC are "rewarding" Oso for his years of service by letting his contract run out and giving him one final chance at Europe

I don't think anyone in Europe will want to spend a transfer fee on him at his age but I can definitely see a lot of takers if he's a free agent, particularly if he has a good World Cup. It's probably better he stays here actually where he's a written-in-pen starter and on form one of the league's best midfielders, which should put him in very good position to be in Canada's starting XI, as opposed to not even making the bench at Forest for example.

Earning a point in Utah is no mean feat, so great result, and two great goals! I think the second half showed we're still too frail to play with a back 4, so hopefully we go back to 3 CB's against Philly, which is probably a must-play game for Mavinga

My thoery is that Oso is letting his contract run out. His initiative, not TFC's. Agreed with the rest.

Absolutely , this is his opportunity to see what’s out there and cash in. The time for him will never be better for a move in January if he so chooses fresh off being on the greatest stage at the World Cup.

He'll be 30 by the time the World Cup hits. I think he has a better chance at making a move to Mexico than he does Europe.
If he does go to Europe, I'd be at a smaller club, similar to the level of TFC, but with a lot less clout.

Mexico would be his best bet at this point IMO. He'd get more respect there at 30 than he would elsewhere.

I could see the jump to a smaller La Liga side, especially with his Spanish speaking skills.

Thinking about Oso the only reason he would want to stay is because money might be better here and he can be home. He's really done everything he can at TFC, so aside from them giving him the armband (which they should) I'm not sure where the incentive is to stay all things being the same.

Did I say Oso can play for Chelsea? Mr. Jorginho played a big part in Italy not being at the World Cup, I’ll go even further and say that if you replaced Oso with Jorginho at TFC you would not notice much of a difference!

Ya mid-lower table Spain or Portugal. probably playing in front of a mostly empty stadium. At least he'll get some runs in against bigger clubs there. Still...30. Who takes a chance on that? only a desperate team looking to fill a specific need.

I'm making it sound like he isn't good enough - which isn't the case at all. He can deal in mid tier Europe - I just think European clubs won't respect him cos he's 30 and has spent his entire career in MLS.

Sounds about right Jabbronies, journeymen midfielders like Oso are scattered all across Europe , and before you all start telling me that he’s a World Cup midfielder, think again we are Canada , Oso is fine in MLS , but in truth only a bottom team Portugal or Belgian league calibre player.

He'd probably see that as an upgrade because he would be "playing in Europe."

A more realistic assessment would say that at his stage only going to a top league and better team (to play alongside great players) in Europe is worth relocating yourself, learning another language (which wouldn't apply to Spain) and culture, and dealing with all the pain that comes with the bureaucracy typical of Europe (only people who've lived there as residents would know). Quite honestly he has a really good gig and paycheck at TFC and giving that up to be nailed to the bench for a bottom-feeder team in Portugal wouldn't be the best decision. But the draw of "Europe" is strong and seen through rose-coloured glasses by many players.

Going at 20, even to a lower team, is a totally different thing because some of the better European leagues have good development systems that are still ahead of what you can get in Canada (although Canada is catching up). Oso is not at that stage of his career though, he's at his peak and it's downhill from here.

I don't think it's fair to categorize Oso as bottom-tier Portugal. I think he could carve out a role anywhere below the top three.

The problem for Oso is moving anywhere and getting nailed to the bench. He went through a period I think in 2016 even where he struggled to crack the XI and even now gets subbed at times. If he wants guaranteed playing time he's moving to a bottom tier team or at least to play for a manager that believes in him. Does he really want to go and grind his way into a Starting XI in Europe at the age of 30?

Yep, Laryea being a cautionary tale at this point.

Honestly, he should take the money from TFC and retire here. But if he wants to play in Europe, he’s got my support.

If he managed to sign for a mid-table team, his situation with that regard would actually be worse than with a bottom-feeder because he would be even further down the roster.

There's a lot of guys like Oso in Europe while at TFC he's a key player. I don't see any realistic situation where he's better off on a roster in Europe at his age except maybe some more cash.

Again I believe this is unfair. There are a lot of players like Oso primarily because his role is very necessary meaning players like him are always in demand. Oso will likely make less cash in Europe given the teams he would be able to make the 18 for, but he could definitely play top 5 football for 25-30 matches anywhere that isn't english.

Fair enough. I guess we'll have to see how things go for him if he does move. Make no mistake, I like Oso, both for TFC and for Canada. I think he meshes well with both teams. I'm just a little more skeptical over what a move to Europe would be for him professionally and for that only time can tell.
