Yeah.
Is that what they call people who think the only clubs worth supporting are the ones winning Champions League titles every year where you come from?

If so, then yes, you are realistic. Swansea City drew with Fenerbahce and beat Steaua Bucharest a couple weeks back, and (hopefully) we're a little better than a team that's spent almost their entire existence in League Two.

Why is this humiliating? Barca is one of the greatest, most prolific club teams in the world.

MLS isn't La Liga calibre, just like Serie B and the Coca-Cola Championship aren't. There is no embarrassment here.

I bet for 90% of the NYRB players, it is just a thrill for them to be schooled on the pitch by such incredible players. And they have scored a goal to boot.

This will be a fun learning experience for them - it's a friendly match. As long as they play hard until the final whistle, their pride will remain fully intact.

My guess is it's more for the reason why goalies get pulled in 5-0 hockey games - so that their confidence doesn't get shot for the next game.

NYRB have nothing to gain league-wise from this match, so they likely just don't want to kill the confidence of their starting keeper for when they return to matches that do matter.

Dirk Diggler
08-06-2008, 09:44 PM
I think the problem is that they faced Barca this late into the pre-season. The best time to face those teams is right at the beginning of their pre-season fixture. Most of the European teams are already in their regular season form by now. In all honesty, its not like we are even close to Independiente or Pachuca. If they were in their regular seaon form or were playing their first string players, they would've thrashed us just as bad.

38000 people attended. That's kinda shitty if you ask me. I think Toronto could have drawn more than that. They have an 80k capactity stadium and it wasn't even half full for one of the best club teams on the planet. Weird.

Of course, that is shitty. It doesn´t matter that (or rather if?) it was "just" a offor pre-season match. Especially in the US it is very seldom to have the oportunity watching such a great team like Barca (it isn`t my favorit actually).

In addition the only reason, why Barca plays against such a team in the US is money and promotion. Think of Chelsea (US), Manu, Bayern Munich (Japan).

We are lucky in Austria to host lots of the greatest teams in their pre-season. Therefore we can watch teams like Arsenal, Leverkusen, Werder Bremen,.......and of course REAL MADRID since at least 10 Years.
As the LASK had its 100th "birthday" at 27th July, Real Madrid has played against our Team with all their stars at the Gugl in Linz (we lost 2:3). Usually they have a preparing game against a small local team in the Steirmark (AUT).

All I can see is embarrassment. The "All-Star" game is West Ham, but a general friendly in NY is Barca... I guess they didn't want the all-stars to get thumped, so they chose second rate competition... Toronto got the shaft, and the all-star game should be done away with.

If I had to choose between watching a thrashing like Barca doled out tonight to RBNY, versus the thoroughly entertaining match with West Ham this year - I'd actually choose West Ham.

West Ham wasn't the absolute best in world competition, but it was a great match, and I personally don't have any lingering regrets about the level of competition MLS brought in for the game.

I also don't see how having West Ham this year means the idea should be scrapped - the year before that, it was Celtic. And before that, Chelsea. Both really good teams.

Gotta agree with you on that. It boggles the mind how Barca comes over to play NY, but the league's best and brightest square off against a mid-table EPL club. Again, nothing against the Hammers; but MLS v. West Ham and NYRB v. Barca seems somewhat jumbled to me.

I'm still adamant that we should keep the All-Star Game, but I agree the current format is a farce.

It's quite simple really... money.

The All-Star Game in our small stadium only generated enough money to pay for West Ham.

In Giants Stadium, you fill the place at ridiculous prices, so you can afford Barcelona.

Actually it was half full. The stadium is in the range of 76+ thousand.
Also, remember the ticket prices were jacked for this game.
Add also its an exhibition game with the hype of European clubs coming over here over and done with after that hyped up tour in 2003.

You forgot about Fulham... And as I said, TFC Supporters got the Hammers. I have nothing against the club as Cash has said, but they are mid-table at best... Always. And with respect to the cash cow of giants stadium, I agree 100% that this is the reason (field turf as well - which I despise)... But the All-Star game is supposed to be about exposure, and West Ham certainly didn't supply that... Barca would.

Regarding TFC friendlies, I really couldn't care less whether they're playing some huge club in a friendly. I'm a TFC fan, I go to see Toronto FC play, not the other team. This might sound harsh, but it sounds like some people are just interested in seeing a Man Utd or Chelsea take on a weaker opponent.

I was at the NYRedbulls/Barca game at Giants Stadium on Wednesday night. We made a nice three day New York trip out of it. Giant stadium was half full for this game. I was told that a few years back when Barcelona played the Red Bulls at Giant stadium the stadium was sold out. However, for that particular game Barcelona had Ronaldinho in their lineup, who at that time was considered one of the best players in the world, and I think it might have been Barcelona's first ever game in New York, which also may have played a factor in the stadium being sold out. Anyways, it was amazing to watch the incredible talent on display for Barcelona on Wednesday night, Barcelona during the first half in particular, put on a clinic on how soccer can be played when you have so much talent working together. I don't think NYRDBulls having anything to be worried about, they were playing one of the best teams in the world and I'm sure they were not surprised on how good a team Barcelona is, considering all the star players on this team. We all know that the MLS is not one of the bigger leagues around, however, it's the best we got over here and we should accept it for what it is, and should just be happy we have a league over here where we can see some decent live footy week in week out.
