The most pragmatic "we will kill you however we can & not care about anything but the result" team comes back to Toronto

IF we go down to 10 men again, no way we have even a sniff of their goal.

This one has 2-0 loss all over it.

Agreed.

I dont' even look forward to the games anymore. And as we could see by last nights miniscule attendance, many others feel the same.

PS how many reds have we got this year already? 3 at least?

While the team isn't good (and is getting perilously close to one of the worse TFC teams in our history) - I still look forward to the games for one simple fact:

To me it is still enjoyable to 'go out somewhere' in the current environment.
I for one am still going as much as possible to outdoor events right now because if the last 18 months have shown me anything its enjoy what you have, safely of course, while it is available as things can change quickly.

Plus, don't midweek games at home typically have lower attendances?

Anyways, whilst the attitude and work rate was great against Miami, I feel like the players might struggle to push in a similar vein after seeing them get nothing for it. Lawrence being suspended for 3 matches basically means more Auro, which helps us at least, but I do wonder if the team will be able to replicate the recent performance against a team that is effective at stopping the opposition from playing football and then getting a win out of it.

Why is Lawrence suspended for 3 matches? Why not just one? I just searched the web & Twitter a bit and didn't find anything about that.

Just checking some stats and it shows we are 2.08 goals conceded per match. If we continue on this way for the rest of the season it puts us around 71 goals and that's top 5 worst all time in the league (75 was worst in 2019 by Cinci and then 74 in 2018 by Orlando).

By standards, Nashville is sitting 2nd at .91 per match. They are even better .78 for away games (I'm guessing due to low block or bunkering when they are away from home).

Soteldo in particular I thought had his best game for us, in a more central position. I still dont see how they get the best out of him and Pozuelo when they are both on the field - less than the sum of their parts so far.

He and Achara work well wide. Perez is pulling them to the same side repeatedly to unbalance the three man back. Really smart tactics, good to see. They can do it anywhere along the back by having them play outside in, so they’re on opposite side from normal.

rydermike
09-18-2021, 07:19 PM
That was not a good advantage call Caldwell. Just because Achara had the ball, doesn't make it good. He was facing away from the net and had a defender on him within inches. A good advantage call is when you have a clear cut opportunity, space etc. That was not that. I'm also someone who loves the advantage call and thinks it is given enough

Edit: typos, extra sentence

Except for his habit of sticking out his arms to look “big” and not pulling them in in time…

He was a really good Center half. We hadn’t ever had one up until then of his pedigree, so it was sort of the start of signing better defenders.

The venom about him on the boards is totally unfair given what a fantastic player he was for us. As you say, our first proper defender

apparently a whole lot of our issues were coaching. Two good performances in a row without Pozuelo.

starting Soteldo on the bench was inspired. They had to move the ball constantly to advance it rather than headmanning it to the roadrunner.

Hate listening to his commentary.

How quickly he was saying the Nashville goal was onside without seeing a replay was ridiculous. And even on replay, I still dont know how that wasn't offside?

Can someone/anyone tell me why the hell Bradley is ANYWHERE near set pieces...ffs, he has zero technical ability and he is taking corners (and hitting them out of bounds even).

On any corners/set pieces he should be last man back and break up any counters with a foul. Leeave the technical stuff to players that you know...actually have technical ability.

I just watched the game and like OG's dog was somewhat impressed. Team has looked more direct the past 2 games, the ball moving quicker less cutbacks without Poz and Yefe, Oso looking like his old self since the CMNT games, Schaff and Achara going for goal, somehow a simpler more direct game is working. Just glad for the guys that they got a win and am looking forward to them beating York

So tfc this year has beaten the best team in the league and the 4th best team in the league and are in last place overall in the league

In what world does that make sense
Seems fishy to me
That would be like Norwich City beating both Liverpool and Manchester City in games this year

Fish? LOL. That's the sign of a team with major problems at CB and at striker, bringing a real lack of stability. Plus lots of problems with motivation, tactics and fitness at certain times. Despite all the misery on the field for TFC this year, there's a ton of parity in the league. TFC is MUCH closer to NE in quality than is the case for Norwich / Man City; plus TFC actually has the higher salary budget. Any team can beat any other team in MLS on a given night; lots of players and coaches that came to MLS from Europe and elsewhere around the world have commented on that.

I think what impressed me most last night was that they moved as a unit, even out of possession. They tracked to their zonal coverage areas at the same pace, they all hurried, they didn't allow gaps the other team could exploit.

Gary Smith told the local press we "rope-a-doped" them with a low block they couldn't break down.

Also, the Shaff goal was totally prepared for, I think. They targeted Johnston because he's normally a fullback and Shaffelburg angled his run to account for Johnston starting the trap late. Given how deep Auro was with the ball and how little space they needed to pull it off, I suspect they were specifically looking for that mistake.

EDIT: We were also doing some funky stuff defensively. I noticed Delgado was shadowing Hany Mukhtar man-to-man for chunks of the game, including following him from deep as he backtracked all the way to the half-line.

I've not been watching the La Liga coverage on TSN - are Kilbane & De Guzman on that all the time?

TSN uses ESPN's coverage, so no.

TSN also pimping La Liga and how they're the new home for it -- and they show approximately one game a weekend throughout their five channels. The rest are on tsn.ca, which blows.

Wish it was back in BEIN SPORTS.

Yeah, we looked extremely well organized last night. I do notice the gap of space between the midfielders and the CB’s, a huge issue under Armas, has now been resolved. I don’t think our CB’s have played any better, we’ve just given them less opportunities to be exposed.

I do wonder how much we are benefitting from being the league doormat. More than a few sides have come to town recently fielding weaker lineups and escaped with all 3 points. That seemed to be a mostly first choice Nashville team, though. Outside of Leal, not sure who else would have been missing.

You don’t know it but you have contradicted yourself
If there is such parity we should not be 38 points away from first place and 18 points away from the middle of the pack
Statistically not possible

Are you seriously questioning whether there is more parity in MLS than in the Premier League? Many experts have commented that anyone can beat anyone on a given day in MLS. Surely there are lots of stats about that. Also about the stronger home-team effect in MLS. Plus TFC is extremely inconsistent these days, with Perez trying all kinds things and seeing what sticks. Last two games something worked. In addition the motivation, effort and focus of the TFC players has varied massively between games this season. TFC also beat first-place New England at Gillette Stadium in July. Finally Nashville is bad away from home this year: despite being 2nd in the conference, their away record is 2-3-5.

Using a binomial probability applet calculator
Tfc has played 25 games in a parity league
So I used 50% chance to win or lose any given game in a parity league ( your words)
Tfc has 18 pts. 18 pts equals 6 wins (6x3)

N=25
X=6
P=0.5

What you get is this
I’m a parity league the probability of one team only having 6 wins is 5/1000

Still don’t think it’s fishy?

chances of getting hit by lightning aren't great, but that still happens too. Just means we are one of those unlucky 5 this time around. It doesn't help if you decide to do silly things during those storms like go out and play golf therefore increasing your odds of getting hit (or in our case hire a manager that wants to try and press at the beginning of the season with a team that isn't suited for that). Or maybe increase the odds further by standing under the tallest tree outside (or again in our case playing half our season away from home in another country, in another team's stadium. and start the season with 9 games in 9 different stadiums).

I'm not saying your point isn't valid, for sure it's fishy that we have such decent players and we are this low in the table...but also saying that it's a possibility.

A few other observations

Looking at the standings it is clear and obvious that this is a parity league
I’m 2020 we were in the third standard deviation on the right of the curve and in 2021 we are 3 standard deviations on the left of the curve with essentially the same players
New England is 3 standard deviations to the right on the curve and Nashville has just barely made it to 2 standard deviations on the right of the curve and somehow a team 3 standard deviations (tfc) to the left on the curve manages to beat those two teams

Also as a footnote the 2020 MLS MVP and arguably an Ironman in 2020 barely plays in 2021
