Victor Wanyama from Spurs to IMFC

I suppose you takehim if offered but....DM is not the DP I thought they'd get (assuming this isn't a TAM move).

holy shit. He will be dominant.

Wow. How many players in their prime not named Sebastian Giovinco have moved from a major UEFA CL side straight into MLS?

Guys want to play for Henry. Not good.

Wanyama on paper is easily the best non #10 in MLS now. Very interesting move.

This is a good signing for IMFC. Meanwhile, TFC can't even give a timeline for Piatti to return.

Prediction: Piatti never plays a game for TFC.

Wanyama has been plagued with knee problems the last 18 months or so, that seems to be a trend fro players coming to MLS!

Wanna bet? Wanyama is more injury prone than Piatti lol.

Return? He needs to make his debut to return. Lol

Question about Josef:

I seem to remember a rule that if you lose your DP for the season you're allowed to sign another one. Is that accurate?

I'm not concerned about the Whitecaps in the Voyageurs Cup this year, but Montreal is starting to really concern me. Do you think that TFC will be ready to face them come August?

Yep, check and see how many games he's played in how many years. I'm sure NE turf will be great for him.

Players may want to play under Henry the player but let's see how long that lasts under Henry the coach.

Not sure he is buzz. In Montreal? A premier league player from Ivory Coast might be buzz, or someone from France, but hard to see a Kenyan generating buzz there.

His knee problem must be permanent - will they consult the Raptors about load management? - but this is a serious statement by the club. He is a very good player who, if fit, will dominate in this league. And is 28.

Apparently Wanyama can't even run without his knee swelling up, and I don't even remember the last time he played.

Some people here complained when we signed Piatti because of his injury history – Wanyama's about 5x worse. He literally might not even see the field.

3 year DP contract is a serious risk. There are people running teams that you know are good at judging risk - Joey the Stinky Cheese man, not so much.

Even if he does get fit, he's a DM.

He's not an AM.

He's not going to be an attacking force.

They already have a cheap Canadian DM in Piette. They don't need a DP DM.

This is a bad move.

I hope it isn't bad for Piette's playing time. Canada needs him in form and ready to go

Yea some good quotes from Spurs fans on the reddit thread:

"Wanyama tore both knees, Cartilage removed from both and multiple surgeries. Couldnt even train with the team properly last 12 months, let alone play."

"I cant remember the last time i ever saw him mobile in a spurs video of the team tbf."

"I don’t watch MLS so I don’t know what the level there is, but Wanyama can barely move these days, and that’s not even really an exaggeration. So I’m not sure if it’s a “steal.”

Wanyama was a quality player, but I really have to question his fitness. He's an archetypal Jose player, big, strong, physical, good in the air and defensively sound. Spurs right now having issues defensively and he couldn't get a sniff.Celtic were linked in Jan, he's still a hero for many there and his return certainly would have given the crowd a lift but Celtic backed out of that deal citing wages, with most fans really believing his fitness levels were an issue. I really liked him as a player and want him to do well, just not against us, but playing on turf in some instances in mls sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Yeah, if he was at Miami or any other team in MLS - good luck to the man but hope they didn't spend a lot of money.

Montreal? SNORT, LOL, guys gonna be a failure, Joey being Joey etc. etc. etc.

These types of signings are the trickiest in the whole football world. High risk high reward.

Kloke interview with Vanney in the Athletic out this afternoon. https://theathletic.com/1656916/2020/03/06/qa-greg-vanney-on-his-future-with-tfc-young-players-championship-window/

Reading between the lines - the club starts to move over personnel next season but if somebody can contribute now, they'll get a shot.

Gonna put out some spec that following won't be around next season

Delgado
DeLeon
Zavs
Morrow
Ciman
Mullins
Bono

DeLeon and Morrow? you think? That is very good veteran presence you're getting rid of there.

DeLeon is only 29!
and a 33 year old morrow coming off the bench would be incredible.

I think a lot of people forget that Delgado is only 24. He can easily be a part of the next generation.

This is a bad move. I don't have much use for Joey and the Impact, but to be fair Ignacio Piatti was a hell of a signing they also got good use out of Drogba and Donadel although not sure he was a DP. I'm not sure you can TFCs DP decisions a thumbs up. Pablo Piatti is a big risk, Jozy with his injury history should not have been signed for that money! Lastly if we could get an honest answer from Bill Manning I would guess he would of handled the Gio negotiations different.

Get ready for 36 year old Messi....

(I maintain there are only 2 teams who would be able & willing to afford Messi for here in MLS - us & NYCFC)

Villa was good for them but all other NYCFC older aged DP's like Lampard and Pirlo did not fare so well in MLS. Messi will still sell shirts at 36 but how many players can play a significant role in MLS at 36, even formerly great players?

Zlatan and Drogba to name a couple (maybe Keane too?). Although I concede outright physicality or those guys is just too much for the average MLS defender to handle / less of a concern with age.

No question Messi at a fraction of his current powers would be a force but how much gas left in the tank? You never know when these guys are going to show down.

Lampard never really seemed like he wanted to be in mls, but he still got got 15 goals in 29 games from midfield, not too shabby. I'd take that for a striker never mind a midfielder.

Keane maybe? there shouldn't be any doubt in that regard.
in mls he scored 104 goals in 165 games as per wiki, winning 3 mls cups in 6 seasons. For comparison purposes Gio scored 83 in 142 games for us. I'd personally put Keane ahead of either Ibra or Drogba re mls success. Not saying he was a better player than either, as he wasn't, but re their time in mls, he was a bigger influence. Both Drogba and Ibra came too late to mls for any of their teams to build a dynasty, Keane and LA were smart, he came when he was 31.

^ no argument here. He was a dominant player.

My memory was just a bit hazy about how he did in his last few years of MLS (since Messi will be around that age when/if he comes) which is why I put in the question mark. Admittedly I was too lazy to check.

Wrt the Whitecaps, I'm not surprised at that revelation. The ownership has no vision and is just flailing away looking for someone to instill one. it's probably better for them to sell the team to someone who actually wants to invest themselves in the team. But odds are if they sell the franchise, it's going to be moved and that's one less Canadian team in MLS. :(
