We were coming through customs at Pearson yesterday and was in line with some of the Atlanta United players, perhaps my Norse curse will work on them, lol
Actually they were a pretty personable group in spite of the customs shit show. Come on you Reds

Funny, I flew back with them yesterday. They got hung up when Pearson closed the customs hall due to overcrowding and I snuck through on my NEXUS card.

They all seem pretty chill.

A win would be a nice change.

I'm expecting a shallacking of our young players. 3-0 for Atlanta. However, since this is MLS anything can happen and you never know, if TFC scores first they could win.

Yeah, I'm not confident of anything but decent weather, a good but expensive beer & a look at next year. Barco is going to have a field day against any mids who don't cover his runs. Hopefully a learning experience for Fraser that he can't give up on runners like he was doing on Saturday. The only thing that gives me hope for the quality of the TFC aspect of this show tonight is Atlanta tends to give the opposing AM space.

Sorry to be negative, but it is hard to generate any enthusiasm for this game. My 13 year old son has a soccer game tonight and I think I will go to that (he also chose to go to his game rather than the TFC game). My philosophy is that I will not worry about winning and enjoy the pleasant weather, it's a great evening for footy. I can enjoy the match without always needing my team to win to appreciate it. As long as the young guys try and do a nice play or two I'll get my ticket's worth. It's still inexpensive entertainment and enjoyable when it's so nice outside.

Look at the Women’s World Cup. It’s trying to give a level of precision that is totally against the spirit and flow of the game. I hate it. Goal line technology works fine; VAR gets it wrong as often as it gets it right and always destroys the flow of a match.

Vanney has set up the scrubs with the best chance of success in having them play a pragmatic counter attacking game. Pretty it ain't, but they keep managing to be dangerous at ATL's end. Using speed against their defense works well.

Will it be enough to overcome the goals conceded by our scary defense? Probably not, but there's a genuine chance of a tie or a win, at least.

So, mea culpa time...boy did I call this one wrong tonight. Fortunately my 14 year old daughter is a better supporter than me and made us go the game. It was pretty exciting, right up to the very last second. Haven’t screamed at a game like that in a while. I liked Endoh and Shaffleburg on the wings making runs and making things happen. I scoffed when i saw the shaffulberg signing on facebook, but wow did this kids ever look dangerous all game long. He should be a first team regular after what i just watched.

Also i am shocked that after VAR that Laryea penalty stood. There was nothing in that challenge that warranted a penalty. Gauranteed that if it was the other way around we would be calling for the ref's head for that call. From a karma point of view i couldn't even be mad at the deleon pen when it happened. Thank the soccer/football gods for pushing Martinez's shot over the net on that one.

Happy for the 3 points.

Dude.... we won.

Lose, tie, or win, it's always good to learn something from a game!

Wow that was entertaining / nerve-wracking! How about putting a time limit on VAR? 30 sec. max. review time for the VAR crew, otherwise it's obviously not clear & obvious and the original call stands. Ref should already be waiting at the monitor during that time: he gets another 30 secs max if the var crew thinks it's warranted.

Overall that unorthodox lineup did very well. It's great to see some speed!! Biggest head-scratcher for me were the subs. Chapman came on 5 minutes too late; game was already dragging before that and he was not influential. And only a single sub, with three forwards on the bench, was nuts IMO. Even just to help with game & time management, should have put a forward on the last 5-10 minutes. Pull Pozuelo back to help control the game. 3rd sub should at least have been made right after Pozuelo's PK goal, to kill time & momentum.

Glad to see a tactical change and resulting win. Vanney outcoached them and maybe even got into their heads a bit. ATL was playing pretty dirty, and both defenses were pretty weak.

AK was useless, and while I’m not anti-VAR, this is a good example of a poor implementation.

EverybodyShuffleBerg was great. He had some good moments last game too.

TheOtherBerg was good yet again, making some great saves.

Fraser did well despite some mistakes. Endoh looked good and was an inch from a brace. Laryea looked pretty decent going forward. Pozo playing well but getting frustrated by the poor reffing.

Defensively we are incredibly weak when relying on backup defenders, and they’re also error prone. We give up way too many penalties. It doesn’t help when midfielders lose the ball fairly often...

Entertaining game. Vanney did well with what he had, the attacking portion and movement up the pitch were quite good (could have been more clinical though, or lucky). A promising result for once.

Dude.... we won.

VAR took away all the fun in winning though. the ref was listening to his ear piece for half the game. We scored our first goal, he's listening to his ear piece. Atlanta starts crying for a PK instead of giving out yellow cards, he listens to his ear piece for 4 minutes and gives a penalty. I still don't understand why you give a team a goal for a ball going away from the net and bouncing into someone's arm (arguably) while it is placed in a natural position. Then the second VAR penalty is absolutely insane, I still haven't seen it touch anyone's hand, unless there was a foul or something, I still don't see where the penalty is.

Instead of celebrating a last minute win, there was 0 celebrations because the whole game was VAR'ed

I agree 100% with this, VAR is killing the game. The only technology needed in soccer are the goal line cameras. Let the refs of the field do their job instead of the ones watching slow motion video.

SirBobSaget

VAR is killing the in stadium experience. You can't celebrate goals anymore. It used to be I would glance over at the linesman to see if the flag was raised, no flag means cheer it up. Now have to check the forums to see why the ref has his hand to ear. Its slightly more tolerable at home since get to see the replays.

The refs are not making any decisions anymore, the game is being officiated from the control room.

I like VAR when correctly used (eg. was that offside or not? It's often very hard to tell without the hindsight).

Problem is when a poor ref misuses the technology, and a lot of MLS refs are poor.

Marky played pretty well last night.

Giving other players a chance and switching things up really breathed a bit of life into the team.

It wasn’t just Shuffleburp being speedy, but he was tenacious. Pirez was trying to fuck him up constantly and he just got up right away and kept his eyes on the prize. He took some pretty heavy hits.

Same goes for Endoh sending whichever Atlanta player to the shadow realm when he bodied him off the ball. Knocked off the ball shoulder to shoulder by Endoh is pretty hilarious; most of our first team players would have just fallen down trying to get a call.

Fraser made mistakes, but as soon as he did he was fighting to get those balls back, and again, he wasn’t going to get a call in this game.

We still lacked a clinical approach in front of goal, and the game could have been over without the VAR nonsense had some chances been buried earlier on (same goes for ATL), but the approach was miles better than hoping an errant cross will accidentally fall to the foot of Boyd or Hamilton and end up in the net.

I’m with whoever said that OG probably won’t fix the defense as is. Even today we were heavily reliant on “transition” play and passes out the back — when we fail at this, it leaves our defense hung out to dry.

Zavaleta made a big mistake, but it wasn’t entirely his fault. Still not worth the money, still not starting quality, but we’ve seen much worse from him.

Ciman makes some great passes, but also some really poor ones leading to interceptions. Sometimes he defends well, but at other times he doesn’t. He’s capable of playing reasonably well, but is gaff-prone and needs to figure that out.

Moor has been poor this season, hasn’t impressed. Too slow, too many crucial errors, too many injuries yet again — time to move on.

If OG is good and (taking the Captain’s armband for the USMNT last night) can control the backline, and Mavinga is fit, we have a formidable starting duo at CB. Depth isn’t great though.

Morrow was okay, but we still don’t have an RB (Laryea and Auro are both better going forward). Auro is gone again, and he honestly isn’t much better than Laryea at this point anyway.

In a way we lucked out that Atlanta was pretty jumbled up front and at the back, but our performance tonight showed some hope for the B team. A pleasant surprised: a pretty exciting game we should have drawn ended up a win due to some poor refereeing and luck. I’ll take it.

I hate VAR. It was supposed to take out the controversy. Instead it doubles the controversy. I really couldn't see how the DeLeon penalty could have been called after watching the replay many times. It might have hit is hand. I can't tell. In the end it was still an interpretation which his no different than if it had been live.

Anyway....Pozuelo is one of the most insane passers of the ball I have ever seen. Some of the angles he gets, his eye for what he can get through, passes I don't even understand how he can see...he's amazing. Get a player or two that can finish (Jozy), and he'll be getting like 2-3 assists a game.

I was predicting a loss last night, and I am glad I was wrong!

Shaffelburg played really well last night and made some nice runs down the wing and had some lovely crosses. I was happy to see he wasn't afraid to shoot the ball as well.

We got lucky on a number of bad passes in our end (the second Atlanta goal was a doozy on Westberg and the defense).

Lastly, Layrea is continuing to impress me with his some of his runs.

It was great to see the team celebrate like they won a trophy after Pity's woeful PK. I'm happy to see that team get three points for once.

It shows what can happen when you insert a few players fighting for position into the starting lineup. We need to do more of that.

I like VAR when correctly used (eg. was that offside or not? It's often very hard to tell without the hindsight).

Problem is when a poor ref misuses the technology, and a lot of MLS refs are poor.

Kelly is the absolute worst for this - relies upon it way too much. The difference between him & Elfath (one of the first in the world to use VAR when it was on trial) is night& day. Elfath overrules it and is the boss. Kelly lets the VAR tell him what is going on & then concurs while watching.

Shaffleburg ... just like I was saying. We need a speedy winger, we had one already, why not give him a chance? Beautiful.

Also – Liam Fraser is the future captain of this team. Like no question.
He just needs to play. If he keeps his head on straight (no indication he won’t) he’ll be a huge asset to the team one day (even more than he already is after a short time).

Edit: in retrospect that statement could apply to either player, lol.

Moor didn't play.

Obviously. He’s still been quite poor this season. I was talking about our defense in general, not just during this game.

It’s an implementation and training issue. Once the implementation is correct and there’s a standardized method of use, VAR won’t be as perceptible or awful.

In this implementation (and in others) with the ways many refs use it worldwide, VAR will always look ridiculous.

Unfortunately, it could be a while until it works in such a way that the flaws aren’t as egregious.

VAR exists to satisfy television viewers and answer “why can’t they see it on the field when millions can at home. “. In this context it is to the disadvantage of fans in the stadium and to the flow and energy of the game. For that reason at a minimum it should be minimized and managed carefully - it is already close to destroying the spontaneity of the fan experience at critical moments in a game. That’s why it should be done instantly and only for obvious errors etc.
it is also structured in a flawed way - a foul on Poz that should be a yellow that prevents a real goal scoring chance is not reviewable and cannot be, unless we want the whole game to be stopped and started; yet slight handballs that had no material difference are reviewed and cause a goal. This is inherently unfair. personally, I prefer not having it at all. Let the game be.

Layrea's first touch needs a tonne of work though, defensively he is improving which I dont see happening with Auro.
