The Voyageurs Cup, if you please.

V-Cup is the only way back to the CCL, which is the only thing TFC haven't won yet, so I prioritize that over MLS Cup this year.

I find that odd and a bit annoying. Sebastian never misses games unless he's hurt, so this suggests something unpleasant.

Not bringing Giovinco to Vancouver is the equivalent of Vanney throwing his middle fingers up at this competition. It is the national final, give it the respect it deserves.

we literally almost never play all of our starters in this tournament unless it's close going into the second leg of the final. Seba didn't play in the first leg of the finals last year either.

I'd be very interested to see what a front 2 of Jozy & Hamilton would do together.

I suspect our backline will be Auro Hagglund Zavs Mavinga & Morgan

Midfield of Bradley Osorio & Delgado.

I think we get an away goal out of that.

On another note - there really has never been a team in MLS history that is as good at winning home & away series as is TFC - we havn't lost such a series since 2015 - 13 wins on the trot.

The way I see it, Vanney is just looking at getting a tie with an away goal for this leg and is going to give a lot of Canadians field time. After the game, he'll adjust players and formations to get the win at home. If things look bad, he'll pull out all the big guns for the second game, just like he did with Ottawa last year. You can guarantee that Seba will be on the bench or starting the second leg.

You're right, and that's smart strategy on Vanney's part. If he played Giovinco four times in 15 days (two of those games on turf) and Giovinco got injured, that would be a disaster.

It's also been a point of pride for TFC to play as many Canadians as possible in the "Canadian" Championship (they are required to have three).

This is up there with one of the more stupid comments on the board I have ever seen... But I will justify his exclusion:

It's one of the shittier surfaces in the MLS
Rest as there are 5 games in 15 days including the ATL game
He did the same thing last year
You need to start 3 Canadians - I rather start Hamilton and Ricketts upfront instead of an all Canadian midfield of Osorio, Chapman, Telfer and Fraser

But yeah fire Vanney - He only won a treble and was in the finals of CL :picard:

Yes. To think, a few months ago we completely burnt out our team. And now some squad rotation comes with more horrid scheduling and people cry bloody murder.

Reality is: if youíre Greg Vanney losing out on the CCL or the Canadian championship wonít get you fired but not making the playoffs this year and a poor start next season might. Only mitigant being if you actually full-on win CCL - risky proposition.

I think that we need to do well, and preserve the Canadian tradition that it is important to play soccer in Canada, for example, look what Toronto FC did with Johnathon Osario who is from Brampton. He needs to preserve himself and continue in the Canadian tradition which will carry on in the years to come, which means, we can continue to win, championships in Toronto, and Canada, as a whole.

Mavinga came off because of muscle tightness. But yes, without him or Moor back there, Zavaleta and Hagglund are often doing headless chicken impressions.

That was pathetic. Team looked dead on their feet. If we play like that next week, we will lose the game.

And, to be blunt, who here thinks Vancouver can't score 2 versus us next week?

Canadians next week should be Osorio Telfer & Morgan. Bring Vasquez on when we need him. I'm ok with Irwin in goal but I want to see both VDW & Mavinga back there.

We had 4-6 guys forward all of the second half. The problem was the ball movement was slow & nobody was making any moves. Ricketts can't connect passes - he's a tap in guy. Jozy needs someone to connect with. Hamilton & Akinola are both better options.

At the end there, we had Zavs out on the wing. Trying to get more people in the box I suppose but it was ugly. He can't pass in traffic. It was painful.

Does Akinola count as a Canadian for this tournament by the way? I know he's a US youth international, but he did grow up in Canada and apparently was (is?) eligible for the national team. Just wondering. Checked the boxscores of the two games he played versus Ottawa we had 4 or 5 other Canadians on the field at the same time, so not sure.

I would dispute that. In the second half it was 90% playing it to Altidoreís feet around 40 yards from goal surrounded by defenders. They didnít overload the flanks or make darting runs through the middle. We made clear strategic choices to sit back to try and neutralize the counter, a stark contrast from the first half.

Of course they were throwing guys forward at the end. They had already been embarrassed.

Some of my points have already been said but Ill repeat others.... We were a better team before they got the red card. After the card we played a poor game.
Jozy was quiet tonight. Ricketts continues to be unproductive considering his chance to play this year. Doesn't create anything by passes and doesn't hold up the ball well. For the few goals he has scored it seems they are him running to the net and the ball bounces off his body. I agree with others... Zav and Hagglund without Moor struggle. Hagglund continues to jump into holes then gets beaten bad and has to run like Bambi to try and catch an opponent streaking to our net. It seems like they need Drew to keep their line. On the flip side "hey" we played the away game to a 2-2 draw which is a really good result heading home. So congrats lads for playing Atlanta to a 2-2 draw on Sat, flying diagonally across the the U.S to Van for a Wed game and coming to play the home game with 2 away goals!

Ricketts was always up there but he's not really taking up space. Telfer & Morgan were always charging up the left. The right usually had somebody forward but Auro stops the momentum to do dribbling exercises & Delgado turned the ball in all the time. There was no urgency.

in my opinion this game was scripted. It is the only logical explanation for the play in the second half.
with a man up tfc should have scored at least one if not two goals.
they should have played to attack and win the game and then the CDN championship would have all been all but over for Vancouver.
winning 2-1 Vancouver would have had little chance to advance, winning 3-1 Vancouver would have had pretty much zero chance.

but therin lies the problem. if tfc wins what interest is there in going down to BMO to watch the game when you already know tfc has the championship won. NONE
the ticket sales are already really bad for the home leg so they had to do something to sell tickets. make it a close 1-1 game and there is a chance TFC could lose and not win the CDN championship. then there is a buzz around the game for people to go to the game. there is some interest in a undetermined outcome of the next game.

now look at the highlight of the doneil henry own goal

if you go to around the 40 second mark in the video, after the goal there is absolutely no excitement from any of the TFC players.
Altidore absolutely cannot give a shit. then the cameraman for some inexplicalbe reason pans right away from the field to some useless shot of nothing, so as to not show the complete lack of emotion from any of the tfc players

With his hand all the way out there Rickett's coulda seen a red. Geez. What the heck was that?
Alphonso is a track star. Wow. That or we were just slow at the back, which is an absolute possibility. With some world class coaching at Bayern we could end up with a genuine Canadian international star. I really hope he doesn't end up just a sprinter with no finish.

Mavinga is the key to our success. Without him on the field everyone seems to lose confidence. The midfield doesn't take the same chances, doesn't push forward the same way and the defence slows right down and suddenly looks like they all have two left legs. Even Zavaleta looks good with Mavinga on the field. Take Mavinga away and we fall apart.

Jozy has the same effect for Seba. Jozy occupies defenders so that Seba has room to do what he does. They really are the best strike duo in the league.

As for the lack of goal celebration it makes sense to me. None of our guys scored that goal. A lot of these guys know Henry very well. Some came through the academy with him or played with him for several years on TFC. Even I screamed my head off when Oso scored but sat silently feeling bad for Henry after his own goal.

I think the second half really highlighted the value of mavinga. That in combination with TFC curious struggles being a man up really impacted the performance.

I agree with a few of the comments that in the end a draw with away goals is not a bad result.

Some outstanding play by a few individuals on both sides was mostly overshadowed by the curious howlers!

As relieved as I was they got the draw I also felt a little sympathy for henry. Would have been nice to see him come back to canada in a red jersey.

Our game is built around building from the back. Moor and Mavinga are the only two who can do that properly. They are also the best positionally and both can man manage. Having 1 or them on the pitch will greatly improve our play - as we've seen the past few games since Mavinga came back. Having 2 of them on the pitch makes us MLS Champs.

and Vancouver down a man is the prime time to do so, but lallygagged the whole second half.

On another note, I really wonder what has happened to General Bradley, to me he seems to have been demoted to a private.
I just don't see the drive and leadership anymore, he talks the talk but that's about it. Sure he completes all of his passes but generally they are backwards,
It is baffling. TFC deserved to lose last night, I am happy with the result, but ashamed of the play in the second half.

Interestingly enough, the original NASL in the 1970's required three Canadians on the field at all times for Canadian teams in all league games (they didn't compete in the USOC or continental competition). Canadians were also counted as "domestic" for US teams.

Really?

I personally felt like Bradley was one of our best players last night. Set up some really good chances including Jozy's header there in the 1st half. Set up the play for that 2nd goal. He was never a flashy player.

Also, isn't it a TFC tradition to play horribly when up a man, even in years past we always struggled, throughout all of our history. Can go back in older year threads when we would all jokingly want to be a man down since we played better.

The whole game changed when he came out. Our back line is terrible without him, and I agree he makes even ordinary players much better. He is the difference in so many games, and doesn't allow the other teams play to build because he breaks it up before it starts.

It didn't help when Auro went out either, as he is a very good player back there too. We are hard to break down for the other teams with them in, very easy to be beat with the others back there(minus VDW).

Was up @ 3am, hereógot ready for work, and then watched the game from 4am, leaving immediately upon it's conclusion (and what a conclusion it was)!

Sometimes, an early red in your favour sees a bit of complacency set in; to be fair, I think everyone had half a mind to conserve energy, given the schedule congestion. I can hardly remember a time we've held a foot at the other opposition's neck, and Vancouver's a side that plays bunker-ball, anyway (looking to counter)Ö so, I wasn't surprised for how things played out, whilst many of our guys are still syncing up and getting back their game-sharpness.

Auro last night bugged me.

We are a team that thrives on quick ball movement.

He seems to spend at least 4 attacks per half standing there staring at a defender waiting for the LB to do something, then tries to dribble around or do step overs. Slows attacks down and never gets anywhere. When he has been effective its been when moving with pace.

Like, I hope he comes back soon enough from what looks like a hamstring pull. But gosh he needs to learn to make a decision and go for it.

I sort of agree re: Auro taking too long but thereís more to it. He had practically zero targets in the box (people were moving forward at a glacial pace) and Ricketts is completely uselsss. I saw Auro gesture to him multiple times as if to say ďarenít you going to run to the space?Ē Ricketts was atrocious in entirety, to the point where we could have fielded an orange construction cone with a similar impact.

All that fancy footwork is just a time buyer for guys to move forward or into the right positions. Needless to say we made little use of it. We canít always cycle the ball and try to probe through the middle.
