Its how I think we approach series/games like this. Others can get close to seeing victory, but then we just put it in another gear and are gone.

NYRB pressures in the middle and then runs their FB's down the flanks to create seams for crosses into their 3 forwards. The key to this series is going to be the passing of Delgado, Bradley, Mavinga & Zaveleta - if they can break through and spring Morrow or Beitashour/Hasler out wide, that will take away a lot of their pressure & then Vasquez, Seba & Jozy will find space.

Worst case scenario, they have free wi-fi in the ACC so stream it on your phone. But yeah, you would hope with TFC being part of MLSE they could spare a TV for the Reds!

Strangely we are Underdogs in the 1st leg according to the books

3.00/+200 for a TFC Win
2.40/+140 for a NYRB Win

Redbulls were 9-2-6 at home.
I think we have won once in 15 games away to NYRB lifetime.
We looked ordinary most of the last 6-8 games.
No surprise.

this is very early odds, odds can change significantly before game time, pinnacle sports doesn't even have odds out yet

i predict it will move to 2.58 new york, 2.58 toronto, 3.5 ties

or in usa odds +160 tornto and new yrok both with same odds

Odds will move exclusively due to what the public will bet.
Opening lines are the expression what value the oddsmakers are seeing - and oddmakers are almost always the best figuring out the real odds.

Legends/Football factory is a catch all for every team. They show everything wall to wall. Always will be a great time. Also if you want/looking for a place near the stadium Catas is great and a nice outdoor patio to enjoy, we did it up there for the season opener last year.

Key for this game will be our midfield to make sure there's very little turnover of the ball and we don't get caught committing too many players in their end. I except 1-1 draw as for final result tonight.

Blindside16
10-30-2017, 10:08 AM
This game will be very interesting to see how it plays out. NYRB will need to find the right balance of attack and defend. If we can score one, we will get 3. I was snooping on the Redbull forums and the common theme is they are going to boo Jozy and Bradley mercilessly and they have to keep a clean sheet. If we can get on the board, especially early, I can see us running away with things. I will be happy with a draw or even a loss provided we get 1 or 2 away goals.

Graeme

So what will the line-up be? What will the formation be?

I'm leaning towards:
--------------------Bono--------------------
--Beitashour--Moor--Mavinga--Morrow--
--------------Bradley----------------------
--Delgado--------------Osorio-----------
-------------Vasquez--------------------
---Giovinco--------Altidore--------------

with Irwin, Zavs, Hasler, Edwards, Cooper, Chapman, Ricketts on the bench

But we could also see:

----------------------------Bono---------------------------
--Hasler---Zavaleta-----Moor---Mavinga---Morrow---
---------Delgado-----Bradley----Vasquez------------
------------Giovinco------Altidore-----------------------

Thoughts?

I hope they get booed to hell and back throughout the playoffs tbh....If the fans want to make the US WC failure into a personal thing to Jozy and Bradley, i'm sure they'll oblige, to the benefit of TFC....and a "beastmode" Altidore will be a very scary thing for the defenders....

I like the diamond to take away central space from Kljestan, and it also shifts Mavinga more centrally to deal with BWP.

Joke of a PK. But what on earth was Moor trying to accomplish with that play? Kick the ball out FFS.

OgtheDim
10-30-2017, 07:17 PM
You could see that coming - Delgado panicked a bit and nobody wanted to just boot the ball. First time the defence didn't do the right thing and we pay for it.

That having been said, we are playing waaaay better then them. Confident of at least another goal. And if not, we'll take them at home. Their press has been timid, our midfield has bossed the game.

1-1 is basically like us winning 2-1 right now.

Shit! Never a penalty in a million years. Once again we have a Canadian ref leaning over backwards to prove he's not biased. Fischer's been dreadful. He's given every 50/50 call to the RBs. We should be at least two up in this game. I just hope that penalty doesnt come back and bite us. We really need to capitalize on our dominance and take a victory back to BMO tonight

They were a class better than the RedBulls in the first half, should be a very clear 2-0.

Watching these games is so painful.....until I see a Toronto team win a "major" championship again (I was there in 93 for Carters HR), and come through in the clutch, I'm like a Cubs fan with 24 years of anxiety induced panic over how Toronto are going to get screwed again somehow.....and I say this knowing logically that we are the best team in this league this year, but until I'm shown otherwise I'm always waiting for someone or something to pull the rug out from under us......for once let me be wrong and let this team do what they've done all year, be resilient.....

Why the hell Vanney hasn't asked for VAR?
He does not have the right to ask?

General Woolfe
10-30-2017, 07:28 PM
What worries me here is calls like that, and goals just before the half, can change games. We should be 2 up and instead were level. I just hope TFC have the fortitude to stand strong against a Red Bull side thats kicking everything that moves and a referee who seems determined to prove he's not a homer. A early goal for us in the 2nd half will settle my nerves, but whatever happens I want to take a lead home for the 2nd leg on Sunday. Our first half performance showed we are more than capable of achieving this.

Hagglund hasn't played a competitive game in months? Beta is the better defensive choice on the road.

I agree Moor has been shaky. Loosing a step. Hagglund is a tank tho.

Goals change games. Without that cheap penalty I think we would've cruised in the 2nd half and maybe put a few more past them. They got a huge shot of confidence and were all over us for about 15-20 minutes, but we weathered the storm and then after that I thought we closed the game really well.

Hagglund is a great defender for playoff games especially. Because of the format teams get desperate and pound balls in the box, and he eats aerial balls for breakfast. Amazing job from him though coming in cold, he hasn't had minutes in a while and he didn't skip a beat.

1-0 loss or draw next week and we advance. Just get Giovinco another free kick next week. :D

I don't get this "we looked bad for most of it." Did you people watch the first half? We were killing them - they had no decent play that first half.

Second half, they came out on fire but didn't put that many shots on until they basically gave up the midfield to us. Then Bono shut em down. IF they try that from the get go on Sunday, they'll be massacred.

Klejstein was out of sorts all game and we got under his skin (NYRB has a thin skin all the time).
Gantar was the Video Ref - draw your own conclusions.
Vasquez took a hip check to the noids - should have been at least a yellow to Felipe there.
Bradley played wonderful. Great hustle, took their press out of the game.
Delgado made some errors, as did Mavinga - both of them have to learn to avoid the cross ball if you can't make it.
Marsch got outcoached - he didn't press at first (that was planned) and they gave up all momentum. They played scared until they got that goal. Then they played hard but were just not that technically proficient.
We are a MUCH better team technically then them.
Cooper at the end was soooo CONCACAF it made me laugh.

We are up coming home with away goals - job done. Injuries? We will see. But I'd put that team without Vasquez & Moor up against any team in the league.

The only regret is that we didn't bury them. But it's hard to complain when you get the result in a very tough place to win.

I think 2-1 represented the play in the game. While the PK shouldn't have been given, they absolutely muffed a couple of glorious chances. They did have us on our heels for 15 minutes there.

But my God, we owned them for long stretches, just bossed them, and could have had 2 or 3 more. But Robles gifted us both of the goals we actually scored. So 2-1 seems about right.

Bono was super solid. Made good decisions, no rebounds.

Anyone complaining about Mavinga missing on a couple of cross field balls is missing the bigger picture. The guy cleaned out about 6 different NY attacks either inside or just outside the box. He was outstanding.

It's boring to praise Bradley and Altidore ... but they were great. NYRB are good at the back, and Jozy still made them look silly.

The only TFC player who didn't have a great game was Seba. I know he scored, it's hard to complain, but he wasn't in sync all night, and he seems to have lost that half step. He is not getting around defenders anymore. Hopefully he finds that gear on familiar turf on Sunday.

My only real complaint - TFC overdid it with the time wasting. It's not the right look for a championship team, that's when elite teams go for the jugular. Could have easily scored that third goal while NY were pressing late. Plus I don't like the bad sportsmanship. Just my humble opinion.

watch the balls that we gave away under pressure

watch the balls we tried to force forward into a 1 on 3 and didn't back up with support
watch how many times we tried to go at a defender, (with players committed foward) and could have been caught on a counter against any half decent team.

Great result for the reds tonight. Set up well to finish the job on Sunday.

I thought that Mavinga, Bradley, Altidore, and Bono were particularly outstanding tonight. With honourable mentions to Beitshour and Zavaletta.
Giovinco didn't do much other than win the game with another wonderstrike. Osorio did well coming off the bench. It was too bad about the injuries because that would have played well for Rickets coming late to get a third goal.

We were unlucky not to have three goals in the first half. Weak penalty...but Moor is just giving too many up these days. Suspect that we will see Haglund start now for the next few games. That was a potentiao banana skin and we have done well. Very professional.

There were times tonight that the game scared the shit out of me nut overall I am very pleased with the result. The 2 away goals are massive. Mavinga looked a little out of sorts but I think that was due to his ankle nagging him. Hagglund had a huge impact of the bench and Cooper pleasantly surprised me. The Redbulls proved why they are probably the dirtiest team in the league. The only impact Kljestan had all game was it seemed like every time they showed a close up of the ref he was in there whine and begging for a call. I'm glad we took care of business in the away leg, now they will have to come out looking for 2 goals which we can hit them on the counter and put this tie to bed. Bono came up big in the 2nd half when we needed him. As for the booing and derogatory hate being piled onto Jozy and Bradley, I hope it continues. Jozy had a strong game and Bradley was chasing down balls left and right.

A shout out to the road warriors. Hats off to you guys, you were loud and could be heard clearly throughout the game.

watch the balls we tried to force forward into a 1 on 3 and didn't back up with support
watch how many times we tried to go at a defender, (with players committed foward) and could have been caught on a counter against any half decent team.

This game was just enough, and our shape was excellent throughout, no doubt.

But man oh man, Vanney won't be happy privately.

I didn't see the game this way, other than us giving away the ball under pressure, which both teams were doing (and that's MLS, it's always the first thing I notice when I watch an EPL game, just how different the elite level possession/passing is vs MLS)

It was TFC catching NY out on the counter, NY had a lot of the ball.

Maybe I am just comparing what we were doing to what every other team in the league is doing and seeing better play.

I saw pass after pass by them get stopped by our midfield. Vasquez had space and with him and Altidore going out wide, this pinned back their two outside backs.

They spent the whole first half not being able to play their game.

I saw play after play in the first half move forward quickly, followed by a period where they controlled the midfield, then Marsch gave up the midfield for an attacker and we started moving forward again.

I saw NYRB go BACK to their keeper on a corner kick because they couldn't penetrate. NYRB NEVER goes back to the keeper EVER and rarely recycles back to the backline (maybe twice in a normal game), and they did that continuously throughout the game

They had possession but no penetration in the first half. They had penetration in the first half but we covered them quickly every time.

Was it perfect? Nope. But we by no means looked bad.

please go back and watch it again.

Acknowledging how poor they played..

Not sure what game you watched, you sure it was NYRB not TFC-Limpact replay on TV?

we weren't great, but we beat a team that has best record at home 84 wins, no one is even close to their record, and you are whining how we played, have a drink or smoke a joint before and during the game and you might feel better once you realize we WON away playoff game.

I'm not worried a bit if Drew will be out even if for multiple games, because Hagglund was very solid tonight.

But then you have always stated your disdain for Drew Moor, I wouldn't expect a comment like, Hope one of our leaders is okay, just an observation, no offense

Cooper coming in.... now I'm worried ;)

Killed off the game, that was the strategy, guess you haven't been paying attention when Vanney has brought on Cooper

I think the way Cooper was used today was incredible. He's a ball hog and a frustrating player, perfect for the last 10-15 minutes of a game. Would like to see him used like that more often

Lots of credit to Vanney for out maneuvering their coach, playing a simple counter attacking game at their home instead of an elegant possession game worked well. They were not prepared for that and had great difficulty breaking down TFC, even though that wasn't TFC's best played game.

Unsung star of the night in my books, particularly the first half, was Marky Delgado and his relentless tracking back and cleaning up. It seemed every time NYRB went forward, they were unable to count on midfield support. Once the TFC back line stopped the forward attacker, any loose ball or pass back was scooped up by Delgado and turned quickly into a Toronto attack.
I think we underestimate the gains TFC have derived from having Bradley, Vazquez and Delgado (and Morrow and Beitashour) play together for eons this season. They know each other, cover for each other and trust each other. A well oiled machine....

Close to a perfect road result in a first leg playoff game though. :drum: Forcing them to move the ball back to the keeper on the corner was something else, I was almost as excited as a goal when it happened.

I almost choked on my beverage when I saw that. I can't recall the last time I have seen that if ever.

Watching Bono, Zavaleta, Hagglund and Mavinga play together for the second half, I foresee TFC's future backline for the next 5 years. All three of them are pretty good, athletic, and young (23, 25, 25, 26). Combined with Edwards, Osorio, Delgado, Chapman and many others on the team being 25 or younger, my heart soars when I think of the future. I can't see TFC returning to those dark "worst team in the world" days under the current setup.

The prospects coming up behind through the academy are going to have to press hard and perform well to take the spots away from them. Which will only continue to make both first and second team stronger. I think next year TFCII will make the USL playoffs and TFCIII wins L1O as the talent starts to get backed up down the line, with those who don't perform being dropped out of the system as players from the academy below start pressing them for minutes.

Speaking of Cooper helping to kill off the game: I loved loved loved this play by Osorio. Just amazing:

Great game all around. Felipe should get supplemental discipline for the deliberate hip check to Victor's gonads, if you watch the replay from the right angle it was so obvious.

One little niggle I had: when we were at 1-1 and 2-1 (both amazing away results away to the Red Bulls), I thought the TFC defense sometimes pulled forward and apart a bit too much, leaving Bradley Wright-Phillips and others more space than necessary given the score at the time. Normally BWP puts away one or two of those chances. Although Hagglund is athletically better, I have to wonder if Moor would have organized the defense a bit better in those situations. Also a couple of times where NY players were allowed to take clear shots from just outside of the box, with Bradley and others only jogging lightly to contest the shots.

In the end they bent but didn't break, and that's what counts. On to Sunday!

fantastic away performance, really solid defensively! We should of killed the game(and maybe the tie) in the 1st half with our chances but I'll take 2-1 and 2 road goals any day of the week. Hagglund did well coming in cold at the half after not playing for so long

I really hope Vazquez is fit because as good as Gio is, Vazquez is the guy that makes this team tick

Gutsy effort last night. The boys were resilient after enduring some adversity. Loved the efforts from Hagglund and Osorio off the bench.

Its not all doom and gloom, it was a great result. I just think this tie could have been done. We were prepared and as i said our shape was outstanding. Ill give them that. And there wasnt a real lack of effort from anyone.

I just think our eyes were a little bigger than our head forcing some passes into counters. (counters NYRB could do little with)

TFC played almost a perfect 1st half until the PK. Got an away goal, they had lots of good chances to score while giving up almost no quality chances. NYRB came out strong for 15 minutes after halftime, but after that, I thought TFC took control of the match again. Overall, a 2-1 final score is a great result for TFC. Now any win, tie or 1-0 loss put them through.

I was thinking the exact same thing about the back line. Throw Hasler in there too if he wants to stay
