After watching the last game and watching Moor lose a step, I wonder if Vanney might replace him with Hagglund on the backline. Atlanta has a lot of young speed and TFC will need their youth to counter that.

Atlanta needs a win to ensure a home playoff game. They will go all out in the first 20 minutes and then tire and get fragile. In some ways, they are a lot like Montreal. If we can keep them to only being up by 2 goals after 30 minutes, we can come back and kill them.

If we draw or win and Columbus draws or wins away to NYCFC, Atlanta is knocked down to 5th and they have to go on the road for a knockout match at either Columbus or Chicago.

I don’t think there is any chance of that at all. Moor has a huge amount of experience that can’t be discounted and is also a leader back there. I like Nick and would consider him over Zavaleta but no way over Moor.

I do agree. However I also think this game could serve as an opportunity to become a tad accustomed to the field and as Vanney would probably say "the sightlines" ! I think the road to MLS cup goes through Atlanta for us and I'll take any small advantage we can get in preparation

as much as i get what you're saying i can't see it happening as we have a bye week after this match along with the old momentum thang combined with the team mentality all season of going for each game - doubt they'd want to break the pattern at this juncture - imho

i think he'll start the A team and potentially sub early if need be....

Blindside16
10-19-2017, 12:39 AM
There is no way the don't start the A team for this one. This is the leagues marquee match up on decision day. A chance at the all time points record in front of a record setting crowd, not to mention getting the guys into the playoff atmosphere that this game with have. Atlanta wants/needs the win to avoid scoreboard watching. I hope we use this game to get the cohesion that has been missing the last few games. That and I think Villalba is an asshole so I hope for 3 points

I doubt they play. One unforeseen red card or injury to a key player and Vanney is taking major heat. That’s a far bigger risk than worrying about rounding into form.

45 minutes max for the DPs, including Vasquez. One of Altidore or Giovinco sits.

[mod edit] getting back on form is probably the most important thing going into the playoffs, bye week or not, potential injuries are always a worry in every match, cards don't matter. Playoffs are whole new competition, so no cards roll over. Just my opinion as is yours

If you’re sent off it does carry through would be my understanding.

Worth noting we had precisely zero “form” heading into last years race. Didn’t seem to matter much as the team rose to the occasion.

BenRhodes23

And Atlanta looks to be in a 5-4-1. Trying to channel WC2014 Costa Rica?

Edit: and it looks like Vanney isn't going to show Martino TFC's 3-5-2 standard. I wonder if that is to throw off Atlanta's preparations?

Hugh Jazz
10-22-2017, 02:37 PM
Our top players will be better on the ball in Atlanta's stadium compared to last week in the wind. Osorio works well with patient build-up so a lot will be riding on him. Bradley needs to have a huge game. Those recent losses were largely from Bradley not handling an aggressive press well.

They can use VAR during the next stoppage in play assuming Atlanta doesn't regain control of the ball.

Well at least we have the chances and they really haven't done a whole lot. Worried about Moor tho.

There have been a couple of occasions that we looked thin at the back, one better pass or one player staying offside and things look different. TFC playing dangerously at times. And we have to convert our chances, you can count on Atlanta scoring goals.

I do have a question:

Do we limp in the playoffs with 3 lost games in the last 5, like a shadow of the team we were almost the full season (until we lost at home to Montreal), or we still have it, and somehow we can get a draw here?

This was one of the most frustrating halfs this season, we were clearly better than Atlanta, but sloppy in key finishing moments.

I am worried about Seba, he's not better at all like he was in the last game.
Plus he was monumentally selfish, when in the first 10-15 minutes came in much laterally to the goal, but preferred to have a shot instead of passing (he had great obtions!).

PizzaEatingYeti

Whoops, I was so focused on the tiebreaking scenarios I forgot Atlanta was a point up on Columbus... so Atlanta stays 4th. They would've dropped to 5th had Columbus won.

I thought overall we were the better team, slightly. Atlanta generated more chances second half than in the first, but you have to keep in mind we wouldn't have been playing that way, vulnerable to counters, had we taken our 1st half chances. And at the end of the day if this was the 1st leg of a playoff series against them, I'd take a draw and two away goals back to BMO all day.

Moor needs to find his form because Hagglund isn't going to be ready coming off of injury. But Altidore looks like he's going to be in the form he was in last playoffs for us, and that goal for Giovinco should hopefully help get him going too.

This was a fairly solid performance overall and I have no doubt we'll step it up a notch come playoffs.

Congratulations TFC on a record breaking season! :scarf:

I thought we gave as good as we got at a very difficult venue today. We found a way to come back twice, when we didnt really deserve to trail, and showed the heart of winners in doing so. I thought we were the better team today over the 90 minutes, and the only negative I could see was our inability to finish some very good chances which would have given us the victory. Many a team have crumbled in that environment, but we stood up like men and in truth dictated the play. The most important thing for me today was we secured the regular season points record and these players wrote themselves into the record books by achieving this, and we had to fight tooth and nail to do so. We've had a lot of disruptions recently, due mainly to International football and there is a certain rustiness to our play as a result of this. Hopefully a solid week of training together can address this. However, today's performance gave me the confidence we need fear no one going into the playoffs. We are the best team in this league for a reason, and if we believe in ourselves, then we can go all the way and win the MLS Cup.

Onward and upwards TFC! :scarf:

The thing about Columbus is that their main three of Kamara, who is pretty underrated as a finisher and Higuain playing like he's possessed pulling strings. Then there's also Justin Meram who is also underrated last 2 seasons who can score and also assist. And Atlanta's defence is vulnerable.

I wouldn't count out Crew just yet. Esp if they are motivated with all that Austin crap going around

Atlanta are an exciting team...but that was them at home a win clinches 2nd...draw 4th...loss 5th....and that was the best they had. This game meant a lot to Atlanta. We could have been 3-0 up at half time. This TFC team never fucking gives up. It was a relatively meaningless game for us and we have clinched the SS weeks ago. We have an extra gear when it's needed. You have to be able to shut games down to win the Cup and Atlanta couldn't do it. You play your home game in the first leg to avoid an away goal...Atlanta can't do that.

The top West team would have placed 6th in the East... we'll never have a better chance. You have got to think that Jozy and Bradley have it all to prove - Gio has a chip on his shoulder and we have depth on the bench if needed.

Btw..Portland wins the West by 1 point...they have 2 home games against Vancouver and Van only has 1 against them. MLS is still bush league... there should at last be a balanced schedule within a conference...that is shite.

My only regret right now is that we havent given Hagglund any gametime. With Moor's dip in form recently theres an argument we should go with Zavaletta, Hagglund and Mavinga at the back. It would even be nice to have the confidence to switch to this formation if its clear Moor is having another howler like today

I also hope we can get rid of this rustiness up front. We played some beautiful moves today where a slighty crisper finish would have seen us walk away healthy winners.

Finally, the treatment of Bradley and Altidore (our captain in particular) by the much lauded Atlanta crowd today was shocking. Lets hope this treatment of our TFC players comes back to bite Atlanta

I dont know why MLS seem incapable of fixing this? Surely home and away against other teams in your conference, and one game against teams from the opposing conference, alternating home and away on consecutive years, cant be that hard to manage. Okay, so youd be two games shorter but that cant be that big of a sacrifice for a fairer schedule

Understand your point, very difficult to switch, but there are options. Jason Hernandez is experienced and played CB when Moor was out for a while. He is much more aggressive in the air and tackling.

I agree that Vanney probably will not make a change but we are giving up too many goals in the last games and some late ones.

Yeah, there are definitely signs he's slowing down & I think Moor is not the everyday starter next season. I also wonder if Hagglunds knee is still an issue. The one game he was on the bench, he wasn't moving so good.

Once the league is at 24 teams, they will only be playing each team in the conference twice. Until that time comes, they will have extra games played against in-conference rivals. That's the Cascadia teams vs each other, TFC vs Impact and Columbus, NYRB vs DCU and NYCFC, etc.

My big dillemma is that are we able to play in the platyoffs that other gear which we were able to do it all year long, except the games since we lost to Montreal at home?

Because I still think that we're not the same team yet since... so Vanney's primordial task is to make this team to play as good as they were playing in July-August.
That will be plenty enough to win the Cup, but if he fails, we're in a world of hurt.

Not sure we can get out of the Conference with Drew Moor starting.

I'm significantly less worried about Moor then, seemingly, everyone else. He has had a poor couple games recently but he was terrific early in the season. The only worry for me is the pacey teams like Atlanta - speed isn't his strength but I think we can certainly adjust to it. I think if we do face some speed in the playoffs, Mavinga needs to be especially conservative and ready to cruise back and stop any fast counters. And if we play with a back 3, that's just even more (or Moor? Get it?) added cover back there. Moor just brings irreplaceable experience in the back and he still has such a high compete level which I think he steps up in big games.

As for today, great draw for me. The finishing was a little off but we moved the ball so much better then last week. I'd rather us generate chances and miss a couple then not be able to string a couple passes together and rely entirely on long-ball tactics. Not only that, but I feel moving the ball around with chemistry as a team is much harder to improve on then finishing. Jozy was robbed and otherwise looks to have no problem finding the back of the net and another week of training will help Seba get the touch back - not to mention that howler today will help his confidence.

Hoping we can avoid Atlanta in the playoffs. I really can't see Columbus pulling the upset but fingers crossed. I can, however, see Chicago losing it to Red Bulls. And I would favour that matchup to keep momentum rolling. Hopefully if we do face Atlanta, they're a little beat up from whatever games they've played before we see them. A couple of their bigger pieces (Martinez, Almiron) have dealt with injuries this year, Parkhurst didn't look good going off today, and we can hope for suspensions. Even if they come at us full strength, I still believe we'll beat them but why not hope for an easier road? As has been mentioned, if this was a first leg - we would all take the 2 away goals and a draw heading back to the fortress. They had a lot to play for today and we were ready for it so we know we can handle what they're throwing at us.

A tie down there is like a win the way I see it. We weren’t even playing for points. A great result!

You're right I know Moor is our guy for the playoffs but he will have to elevate his game, whole team for that matter. Today was good though :hump: made more than enough chances to win.

I think Moor just reads the game so well that he isn't a liability by any stretch. Look at today - he pressed up the field at a crucial time, perfectly dispossessed the Atlanta-man, and made a terrific pass over the top for Jozy to finish. Not overly confident that Zaveleta or Hagglund would press and make that tackle. Even if they did, neither would have played that pass. Moor is strongest in a back 3, though, and it is absolutely crucial that Mavinga is helping him to cover on a quick counter. If only we could combine Mavinga and Moor...the speed and recklessness (in a good way) of Mavinga but defensive mindedness and ball movement of Moor.

Esp if they are motivated with all that Austin crap going around

the Crew have something like a ten game undefeated streak, hottest team in the league.

Yeah, 2-2 on the road would be a great result in a playoff series

I have a question as there has been no replay of the event... In the second half before Atl scored to make 2-1, Altidore looked like he was fouled right at the edge of the box by Parkhurst... That should have been a red card or a yellow with a pk awarded. Why wasn't VAR used. The only person who said anything about it was Kurt Larson and he said it was a straight red as Parkhurst was last man.

Anyone else see or hear anything about that play?

Yeah, quite annoyingly they never even showed a replay on the broadcast, I still haven't seen it again. I thought there could've been something there seeing it live.

I haven't actually read the replay rules so I don't understand its use. But that was my thought too.

Our passing and interplay was very nice in that game. Think we could have walked away with all 3 points but the game was about getting that chemistry back. I think we're in a good position for the playoffs.

I missed this, what time in the match did it occur (approximately)? I'll go back to my PVR and see if I can grab the clip.

Atlanta's 2nd goal was at 72:09 so that would put it a couple of minutes beforehand. It wasn't on the highlight reel either.

Did Vazquez go off injured or was it precautionary?

im shocked by the hate for Jozy by some USMNT

he had an off game in the qualifier, but its not his fault they are out.

He's reading all this hate on twitter, im hoping he uses that as fuel

Its during the 63'. so start around 62:30 I think and watch from there. Mavinga plays the long ball to Altidore and Larentowicz jumps on his back and rides him into the box. Giovinco and Bradley are incredulous.

Yea I remember that, surprised that VAR wasn't used the same way Moor's handball was called earlier.

How that is not a penalty and straight red is beyond me

League intervention, advantage to Atlanta, VAR had gone for a beer, so no one was at the controls. The referee had already used his allocation of 1 VAR per match.

That play shows how ridiculous Video replay is. They replay for the tiniest of touches by Moor’s hand, which no one noticed or cared about, and then no foul on this rugby tackle. The use of VAR means that the first call was to a standard of perfection beyond the normal vision of referees, yet the second no call, a far more obvious foul to everyone, is missed. The game would have been officiated more fairly without VAR: no penalty, and no foul here. If you are going to have VAR that finds tiny little fouls or hand balls, it is unfair to the teams not to get these calls right as well.
