Fire have to play on Wednesday ahead of the game against TFC. Usually it is us getting the busy schedule and our opponents on a full week's rest. Nice to have it the other way around this time.

Going to need a big game from Bradley and Delgado to cut off Schweinsteiger and McCarty from dictating the game from CM. Be wary of Accam with pace from the flanks. Nikolic is a poacher. Dangerous, but he needs a lot of service and doesn't create chances for himself.

I think TFC will play a bit more conservative and look to hit on the counter away from home against a quality opposition. TFC also has way better depth than Fire. I think Fire will come out aggressive to try to control the game before mid 2nd half, since they play a midweek game and before fatigue sets in. 3 pts would be awesome, but realistically a point is a good result.

We're lucky to get them now as they are in a bit of a slump: one win in five, and three losses. Doubt is creeping in to their team. They're six points back of us now. And a mid-week game for them. Here's a good chance to make a(nother) statement.

Chicago has the pieces to give us trouble. Not only are they good, but they have what we struggle to deal with. Strong CMs to slow down Vasquez/Bradley. Accam has the pace to pull apart our centerbacks. And De Leeuw is just dangerous - he torches us. I personally think he's the most dangerous player on that team.

Hugh Jazz

I remember when we played the Fire earlier this year Bradley was much more aggressive than usual, often coming forward to pressure Chicago's CMs. It seemed part of the game plan and I wonder if we'll see a somewhat different approach again.

I fear other teams (NYCFC, Orlando) much more than I fear Chicago. Their record flatters them, they are a 500 team returning to earth

TFC 2-0. I see Altidore scoring, their back line can't handle him.

just going to put it out there, since it was an issue last year, and might be an issue again this year, but if groups still have tickets it will always go to their members first, which most of the time leaves none for non members. If you are interested in away game tickets in the away supporters section, your best bet it to join a group. The groups have a relationship with almost all away game FOs and will have better pull at getting tickets, and some of the time the away sections are blocked off for us, so it's in your interest to join a group.

I was thinking the same thing. There was a lot of hype about them when they came to BMO and if I recall they were on a roll but they didn't look all that great. TFC have been able to shut good players down in games so would be beautiful to see that again. If we do beat them at home it will be one of the sweetest victories. Going to be a battle though to do it.

I wouldn't underestimate Chicago, their midfield is excellent. Maybe age will catch up with them but the games I have watched ( which were a couple of weeks ago and earlier) they really controlled the midfield. And a goal poacher is always dangerous.

i think we are going to miss Hagglund. His aerial dominance is very helpful in tight games.

Schweini looks increasingly pirlo-esque out there in terms of his effort on the defensive side of the ball. He'll be attempting to play 270 minutes inside a week. Juninho and starting LB brandon vincent look like they're probably out too.

I think Chicago might also generally be shit. wouldn't be surprised if they end up falling out of the playoff race. I think all four teams behind them are better and in better form.

Chicago is riding out their home form of 10 wins, 1 draw, 0 loss. As much as Fire is in a bad form right now, their losses are away. And they have 4 out of 5 IIRC at home next little bit.

You're right, we do… but, I'm not sure that's sustainable, longer term; you can see how relieved Vanney is to get some proper training in and eliminate any trace of sloppiness creeping in, despite our ability to maintain a fairly high standard, on short rest.

Also allows us to leave it all out there a bit more, during the game, knowing you have a full week's rest to look forward to.

OgtheDim
08-19-2017, 08:12 PM
Defence has been the sloppiest we have seen them all season.

Pass backs that bounce, a pass back to Bono's chest, Bono kicking it off the side of his foot, Mavinga bad passes a couple of times, De Leuuw doing a basic hesitation move and Moor not seeing it...twice, Bradley losing the ball while going across the top of our box.

Somebody needs to slap them upside the head.

Beita is on the bench...which is amazing in and of itself.

BTW, Vasquez under Seba against this Chicago midfield would be just letting Schweinsteiger and McCartey roam. No thanks.

So far so good but....
None of the teams are playing good.

2 things I am afraid of:
- too many giveaways, if feel that the Fire's best chances to get goals will be from mistakes in our midfield
- some too long portions of game we just sat back.... we can't absorbing pressure forever like this

Plus I'm waiting some better moves from Seba and Alti.

One thing is for sure:
If we'll lose this one would feel like a huge loss after a 1-0 first half.
A draw is still very much OK.

He's been playing more and more up the field. Almost a striker tonight. It's giving teams fits, NYCFC couldn't mark him either.

We probably have the best team in league history, the best talent and most depth ever of any team in the past.
We can beat any team, but the one that makes me nervous, just moved into a playoff spot......Montreal.

We've got 3 of our remaining matched against Montreal. So we've got great influence on whether or not they make the playoffs.

In one of those 3 probably we'll get our 4th defeat of the regular season.
There's no way around it this time... no matter how gods the Reds are.

The way he played tonight I can see him moving to a higher level than MLS. He probably won't even get a look because he's a young Chicano guy who was a Chivas castoff, but he was lynch pin good tonight, finding lanes all over the place, finding the perfect space every time, two nutmeg passes, one backheel volley, a goal... Jesus H, what a game.

This is just too easy. A lot of our guys didn't have great games, and it didn't matter. We just pressed them when we needed to.

Wow.

To simply put it, its beautiful to see. No matter if they play a down, average or great game, The Reds are on target, know what it takes to bring home the three points.

The sequence that started with the Delgado backheel, that was the most unreal thing I have ever seen in MLS. Like the Globetrotters or something. The shot that ultimately resulted was blocked, but if it had gone in, that would have been the goal of the decade.

Watched Schweinsteiger's comments after the game. Very interesting.

Basically says Chicago's attack isn't good enough and that they are making bad decisions. (And swats away a "was this like a Champions League game for intensity" question from what might have been Larson.) Reminds me of 2015 with Giovinco reaming out players on the field for making poor decisions and demanding they do better.

If he were to stay for another season, I think Chicago would get better but the people around him need to improve. I've never been a fan of Accam - he's way too selfish. And Nicolic has been found out and needs to work through this to get into better positions. I'm not sold on Juninho. And Dax isn't demanding of his teammates enough.

This is rich. Chicago just isn't very good .... Schweini himself is a big part of the problem, he can't run any more.

I disagree with this diagnosis. I personally rate Accam (he has speed and can control the ball) but the problem is really in MF and at the back. McCarty is over rated, and their backline can't mark properly - we won every 50/50 ball and really just toyed with them all night... compare that to how Marshall and Alonso played in MLS Cup.

Would absolutely love to get Chicago in playoffs, but doubt they are good enough to be in final four in east.

My worry is we are developing bad habits because we have not seen playoff caliber defending in most of the last 10 games.

It'll get addressed because Montreal can defend (playoff last year was a bizarre anomaly) and they hate us. Those games will get us ready. I'd almost rather we lose one or two of them, to get that edgy anger back (I know I know, I am not supposed to say that!)

Some Chicago fans saying the issue is refs not giving them the calls and that MLS had the refs give them the calls before the all star game just to pump up the city. WTF. Some of those guys are really reaching...tin foil hats and everything. They just weren't that good and couldn't beat Toronto at home when we weren't even having our best game. I didn't see any weird calls last night. Blaming the refs is just stupid.

I'd agree with everything here except McCarty; he's criminally underrated and better than MLS. He's just carrying the midfield, most games.

They had two significant problems yesterday; one, their defense is criminally weak for a top-half team. Christian Deane isn't even ready to play in MLS, let alone start in the center. Two, they were tactically poorly set up because their coach didn't want to get beaten by a high line. They didn't have enough pressure on us bringing the ball out of the back, and got overwhelmed in midfield by having 5-on-3 much of the time. A 4-3-3 is going to get killed by a good aggressive 5-3-2.

Agreed. They look pretty good going forward... more than enough to consistently poke holes in our normally dependable defence. They have speed, a guy who can create, and a guy who can finish. It's a good attack.

Midfield we just kicked the crap out of them. Either we've suddenly outclassed the whole league in terms of our ability to play between the lines or their mid was simply too slow and the gaps appeared faster than they could be closed. I feel like we won the overwhelming majority of challenges and second balls.

Schweinsteiger helps move the ball effectively but his wheels are not enough. Mccarty played at a level below his reputation, to say the least.

I think they are at about the same stage TFC was 2 years ago. The potential is there but the overall roster isn't strong enough.

Fire had 3 out of 4 starting defenders out. And Lampson sucks. All this game did was to prove that Fire's depth sucks on defence and their GK sucks.

Christian Dean is on fast trajectory towards being a permanent USL/NASL defender

Three more points in the bag. Rather than beat a dead horse and nit pick the game I am going to savour this one. Yes some of our boys had a rough night and weren't at their best, but teams that contend and win trophies find a way to win. Amazing away support, the road warriors should be proud. Vic Rauter needs to call all future games with a ball gag in. He makes the game almost unwatchable. Now on to the next one and keep our record at home.

I really don't understand why there are so many shit announcers in this league.
I suppose part of it must be that the good ones get hired to call other sports that pay more.
But there must be a bigger talent pool than this.

Surely there are some intelligent young men and women coming out of some radio and television school,
with knowledge of the game, and voices that are pleasant to listen to.

Heck, I think I have a good radio voice.
And I have a big head that is perfect for tv.
Maybe I'll go back to school and learn to be a sports commentator!

It's more that this isn't their sport, and they are hired as experienced broadcasters, not soccer people.

Put them on giving stats on left handed pitchers against right handed batters in the 7th inning and they'll do fine.

I agree with Red, calling a game off a screen isnt the easiest especially when you are trying to get the correct players as you don't get the views or prior vision of where the ball is going to which player. So you need that split second hesitation to recognize the player then put a name.

It's not a great situation, but yeah my only thing with Vic is he repeats phrases too much such as Guess Who, but it will get better for the home games! We all know that! Hopefully with CPL coming into affect it will allow us who are currently doing L1O to rise up a little.

Trust me though, I've done days where I've commentated 5 games in the same day for Nationals, sometimes you get into a lul especially when the play is slow.

Got back last night and just settled in. HOLY FUCK, what a game Saturday night! It's not easy going on the road to pick up three points, especially against a close rival. But TFC withstood the pressure, and a sloppy field, for the win. The only win by a Toronto side in Chicago this weekend, lol.

Our section was killing it in 134. It felt like home in the South End at BMO Field. Singing, chanting, clapping all throughout the match. I could barely hear the noise going throughout the stadium, we were THAT loud. When Gio scored in the 90th minute, we totally lost it. I got hit with a beer shower because of the celebrating, but I didn't mind one bit.

I never got to attend the second leg of the East Final against Montreal, so that was easily the best live TFC game I've ever experienced.

When I got back to my hotel room, I was able to watch it again on Comcast, making it all the more better.
