Is waiting near the away team's bus the best way to meet opposing players? That's what I did against Atlanta, and I'm looking to do it again on Saturday. I want to meet Liam Ridgewell because we're from the same town in England :):)

Yup. Good luck!

Portland on a high but that win vs the Gals was pretty 2 sided. IF the Gals hadn't had one called backed they would've kept shelling em.

That game was definitely more even than the final score. Valeri's goal was incredible

So I'm part of the Lumber Jerks group coming into down this weekend for the match.
I come asking about tailgating. The websites have been not helpful.
1. Can we do it?
2. Is there a preferred section for away fans?

Thanks in advance.

Public drinking is not allowed in Toronto. (though nothing stops people from using a coffee cup with their beverage) There isn't much of a tailgating thing in Toronto, or space to do tailgating around BMO Field. Usually people go to a pub for pre drinking. Many bars walking distance from BMO Field, but I'd avoid ones frequented by TFC supporters group. Even if you and other Timbers supporters go to a supporter's pub, it's unlikely you'll run into grief, but prepare for some good natured ribbing.

IIRC section 104 is reserved for away supporters, but best ask TFC FO.

Enjoy your time in Toronto

Timbers Army Away version tends to sit together waaaay up in the official away stands up at the top of 204. Saw an East Coat Platoon scarf a couple of years ago.

Have a lot of time for the Timber's Army - great support all over North America. But I do love that cartoon.

Adding on to Yohan's post to you,
There isn't much room around BMO field in the first place plus the Canadian National Exhibition (basically the State Fair for Toronto) is setting up for next weekend to begin, so there would be less room than normal.
Best bet is always Shoeless Joes.

Except the substantial tailgate area during Argo games, right across from BMO field. Maybe this could happen for a TFC playoff game. Can't happen during the EX tho.

I would actually go to a TFC sponsored tailgate, maybe the Red Thread Brewing could approach, isn't Jim Brennan involved with Red Thread?

Does Portland play a deep back line and try to steal a point or 3 off of counters? Toronto has proved it struggles to break down bunkering defenses. Could be another frustrating one to watch with 40+ crosses

OgtheDim

With the exception of Chicago, everybody is going to bunker against us for the rest of the season. It up to Vanney to figure out how to get the ball moving quicker and work things through the outside effectively. We have seen a lot of Jozy and Seba moving out wide to pick up the ball and combining with the WB's. Need more of that and some decent crosses in from wide areas. I also think teams are adjusting to Vasquez and he needs to change the repetoire up a bit.

Portland has scored as many goals as TFC and a win could put them top of the West Table. are you sure they will bunker?

We should win. We should win every home game. It is particularly important so that we can buttress our lead.

Even if they park the bus, and I would not blame them for doing so, we have enough to win, as long as we stay disciplined ourselves. If they attack they play in our hands, we stay organized and counter. Either way we need to win, to keep the momentum going.

Bringing the family down to the game for the first time. With the light rain scheduled during the match should we bring ponchos or will the roof provide enough coverage that unless it downpours we should be o.k.? We will be sitting in section 205. Also in the seating chart a part of section 205 is white, is this a supporters section? if so what part of 205 is supporters?

Looking forward to the match. Very excited for the first time out!

Portland tried to bunker for a draw but once TFC scored they had to open up.

I don't know if it showed on tv, but Vanney did a significantly tactical change in the second half. Instead of relying on wing play like the first half, he had the team play lots of short horizontal passes with the occasional penetrating pass forward. It worked really well slicing through their defense.

08-12-2017, 07:30 PM
Another great win for TFC!

However up until we scored that was as tough a home game as weve faced all season, and lets not forget Portland passed up two great chances they really should have score. Nevertheless abother three points and the Reds go marching on. Especially deserving of a mention I thought our back three were solid as a rock tonight, especially given the curveball they had to deal with in the early departure of Hagglund (I hope the big man is okay, it looked a nasty twist) Although the beck three were great Morrow has to be MOTM for his brace. He adds so much to our attack the way he ghosts in from the left wing

Anyway, next week is the big test, onwards and upwards to greater things TFC !!! :scarf:

Morrows second has to be goal of the week. Absolutley gorgeous lead up. We are so lucky to have this team in front of us.

This team.

Everyone is buying in, and you can see it on their faces. Seems like each and every player understands their role, and we can easily have at any given point at least 2-3 guys competing for every position.

Each game I tune in for, I REALLY look forward to watching them play. A far cry from a couple seasons ago even.

It's such a luxury having a 5th choice centre back (Hernandez) who can step in and do the job.

OgtheDim
08-12-2017, 09:45 PM
Well that was fun.

I don't think Portland bunkered - their midfield doesn't provide enough defensive work (apart from Chara) to really be bunkering. The Timberrs like to counter and control the ball. They had no width though which allowed Morrow to have a great game and Hasler to look decent going forward.

Impressed by Hernandez coming in cold like that and running things back there. They had to move away from Hagglund's man marking of Mattocks to more of the zone Moor usually runs and it worked.

Given space, the 3 DP's and Vasquez were able to swing things around quite nicely. First half, we seemed bothered by the wind at our backs, to be honest. Jozy had a great game that nobody would have noticed - worked and worked and worked and found places. Quick ball movement helped to get through their lines. Seba's passes were sublime. Bradly had his usual steady game (except the gaffe which started their break for their goal - I notice after the game Vanney talking to Bradley and Delgado about that)

I am looking forward to our back line for the next 6 years with Hagglund, Mavinga and Zaveleta. We have never seen what its like to have the same back line for a second year, let alone 5+ like many great teams do.

Delgado had a strong game and the subs did well too - Ricketts for sure would have had a penalty there and Osorio put himself about like he hasn't done all season.

The Tifo - Seba was ribbing Vanney about it when it went up - good to see...and deserved.

Roll on Chicago

Vanney deserves big praise for how well everyone in the squad seems to understand the system, especially the back line. It doesn't seem to matter who we've got as our 3 CBs out there, even when missing Moor, we barely skip a beat for the most part. Very impressive.

I anticipated this game like a 3-1, 4-2 type score for TFC.
I thought the Timber's forward play is too good to not get at least 1 goal at BMO. This is why after the first half I was really worried that we can not score.
And yes, playing all the game like in the 1st half, would have been very difficult not to lose a point or points to Portland.

The xG decisions are off - rated Mattocks run on the right when covered as high in xG but the chance for Delgado down the middle as low. Seems to assume when a player has more time they have a better chance.

Also the passing chart - Seba and Jozy are both centrally placed because they both swapped wide to both sides. The heat map on whoscored shows this. https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1163925/Live/USA-Major-League-Soccer-2017-Toronto-FC-Portland-Timbers

Really enjoyed that victory and seeing the club keep their foot on the gas.

Interesting reading these boards a day later. Was at the game, surprised not to see more mention of Vasquez who looked very good and was involved in a lot of our good play; on the other hand, from where we sat Jozy looked very ineffective in the first half and Delgado made numerous errors, although that will be obscured by his goal. Not much mention of Mavinga either, it's like we are taking his quality for granted these days!

I don't agree. At all.
1) When wingers try over and over to beat defenders by hitting the ball past them and trying to outrun them to the ball...I think it is a lack of other more technical options.
2) Defensively, 1v1, he looked off balance. His mark always had space to whip in crosses.
3) His crossing is poor.

He hasn't been a glaring issue, but I don't see quality there.

Hasler was on a terrible team that just got regulated to the second division in Switzlerand. Vaduz and the teams at the bottom of the Swiss league or 2nd division are not even in the same league as MLS. This football is worse then NASL.

Hasler is not very good. He's not god awful, but don't expect him to be worthy of starting so I disagree he would start on 18/22 teams, that is for sure.

He was ok... sorry but I've raised my standards and you should too.

Edwards is a young, promising Canadian who was building confidence, playing well, and showing chemistry with our stars. I don't understand Edwards not starting.

notthesun
08-13-2017, 11:27 PM
Hasler has been fine. Better on the ball than Alseth and more defensively responsible than Endoh so far, so he wins the backup job in my mind for now.

Edwards is a lot better on the left than on the right, he shouldn't be playing RWB. He doesn't factor into this discussion nor should he.

BenRhodes23
08-14-2017, 12:03 AM
Edwards to me is purely a LB/LW/LWB... Shouldn't even be in the conversation for RB. I like Alseth but to me, Hasler is the bench RB when Beitashour is back

9 wins, 3 draws and 0 losses so far at Fortress BMO. TFC somehow has over 70% win rate all together. Nuts.

Goal Dif of +22 at home as well.

Re watching all goals, Gio seems so genuinely happy to see his team score. Refreshing to see such a grounded superstar who puts team before self.

I think one of my favorite moments is that third goal - Giovinco tries to play it back to Altidore, but a Portland defender gets a toe on it leaving Jozy stranded, Morrow comes in and buries it and Jozy's celebrating it like he put it in himself (watch the replay around the 2:20 mark https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/08/13/toronto-fc-return-winning-ways-believe-they-can-keep-getting-better). I know Seba and Jozy need to be "greedy" sometimes as strikers but it's so awesome to see everyone really getting the team mentality and being excited for each other.

1. Vanney's second-half adjustments

Greg Vanney’s Toronto FC (https://www.mlssoccer.com/meta/club/toronto-fc) went on a four-goal scoring spree (https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2017-08-12-toronto-fc-vs-portland-timbers) in the second half of their match against the Portland Timbers (https://www.mlssoccer.com/meta/club/portland), after being held to just one shot on target during the first 45 minutes. The coaching staff’s adjustments at halftime were pivotal in propelling TFC to a win.
Through the first half, the Reds were quite simply too nice to their opposition – they went forward with too few players (often just three players only to be met by at least Portland’s four defenders), they moved the ball too slowly and they progressed down the side of the field when it would have been far more dangerous to attack down the middle. Portland weren't particularly brilliant during the first half, Toronto just did them a number of favors.
Vanney corrected all of this as his side emerged from the intermission with a different approach. Toronto’s first goal (https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2017-08-12-toronto-fc-vs-portland-timbers/details/video/114115) in the 58th minute featured an attack with five players, the ball moving much quicker – arriving in the final third from the defensive third with one or two touch passes in about eight seconds, and the entire attack started down the central channel of the field.
It was more of the same during Toronto’s second goal (https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2017-08-12-toronto-fc-vs-portland-timbers/details/video/114125). They promptly took advantage of spaces that opened up, they drove the ball centrally, and they committed five (arguably six) players to the attack.
There are multiple reasons TFC has the most points in the league at the moment: quality players, depth of the squad, motivation from just coming up short last year. But Vanney and his staff’s contributions, especially visible in matches like this one, are a major advantage for an already impressive team.

Good for him. I wonder how far back you'd have to look to find another outside defender winning player of the week honors - I'm guessing it's been a while.
