Atlanta has sold 50k for their first match, close to a sellout (55k) of their pointyball field. 30k season tickets, second highest in the league and the highest ever for an expansion side. Life is great for MLS 3.0 sides, and there seems to be a lot of pent up demand for footy in some markets:

I was just over looking at the Big Soccer Forum. There's a thread for people to post there predictions on final results for the year. Every single person who has posted, predicts TFC to finish first in the east with many going further and predicting either that TFC wins the Shield, wins the MLS Cup or plays in the Cup final.

Wow TFC has come far! Felt great to read positive comments about the Reds instead of being the but of all MLS jokes. It takes some getting used to.

Anybody got a recent definitive piece to read about Atlanta?

Well here's a fan perspective on Atlanta

http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/217804112/atlanta-united-eve-first-mls-game-fans

I like these two bits

Right now, Atlanta United is pristine, unblemished, nothing but something we can all get excited about and feel special about and scream super loud about. Atlanta is a city that has sometimes struggled with a collective mindset, but the unquestioned desire for that has led to this moment for Atlanta United. Everybody's a fan of Atlanta United right now. But it is much easier to be a fan when you haven't, uh, played any games. Now there are actual games. Now there are actual sports. Now is when it gets hard.
So on the eve of their first game, I just wanted to take the opportunity to appreciate this final moment of perfection for Atlanta United, when the whole city's ecstatic to welcome a new team, to feel like they're a part of something, to have a happy collective good, before the ungainly realities of cheering for a sports team set in. Many of those 50,000 fans won't come back after this weekend. But if this team can give them that moment -- or even if just the atmosphere of 50,000 people losing their mind, starting something together, can itself be that moment -- then, well, dammit, they'll have us forever, whether we like it or not.

&

That's US in the corner
That's YOU in the spotlight
Losing to our set piece
Trying to keep us OUT
And I don't know if you can do it
Oh no I've said too much
You haven't scored enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

ensco

Agreed. The only mild rap I've heard against them is that their preseason may not have challenged the squad as much as probably should have. But I feel that's true for a lot of teams.

OgtheDim

I actually think Atlanta is underestimating MLS a bit

In this Guardian interview,

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/mar/01/tata-martino-atlanta-united-mls-soccer

Martino said

n Atlanta, he’ll be true to himself. Martino, ever the student of his own tactical philosophies, doesn’t believe he should change anything just because he is in an unfamiliar league. “I think when a new manager who has a specific way of playing comes to any league, he doesn’t think about adapting but rather looks for ways to slowly implement his style so it can be developed for years to come. That’s what I’m trying to do here in Major League Soccer.”

Travel and turf and salary cap be damned, they are going to play that high South American press. I admire that in some ways but in others this reminds me of NYCFC and their playing it out the back.

Also, lets just say a few Argentinians don't think of him as a genius.

ensco
03-03-2017, 01:05 PM
^The Tata piece, combined with that DP strategy, make them the team I am most interesting in seeing up close. It's kind of like a better attempt at what Mo did in 2007, except based around Conmebol, not England.

FiveThirtyEight has added MLS to it's power rankings.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/mls/

Surprise, surprise, TFC is ranked first, followed by Seattle, NYRB, and Dallas. Atlanta is ranked 9th. Simulated seasons are recalced after every weekend of games, so it should be interesting to watch the team's fortunes go up or down based on statistics rather than pundits' gut-feelings.

They havn't had a real identity since Kreis left and I'm not sure Petke knows how to create one either. I think one reason why they have gone with an interim is RSL play in Jersey this weekend. Petke back for his first game at that arena would be a complete farce.

So reportedly.... Abdul-Salaam from SKC is out there in terms of trade opportunities.

I don't think he would be entirely cheap but not terribly expensive either. With Delgado getting very little opportunity and TFC not having another natural right sided player with a huge motor available... I think this sort of move makes sense. Midfield is looking incredibly crowded on our roster right now...

Initial B

Why make it more crowded? Just make do with the players we have right now and give the depth players development time with either TFCI or II.

Assuming you mean less crowded? Delgado would be taken away from the area where we have the most cover (Central midfield) while Salaam would be added to the area where we have the least (right side of midfield). Yes we just signed a couple guys but they remain totally unproven.

The idea is we no longer have to look to Endoh or some other square peg in a round hole when beitashour is unavailable.

Very interesting points mae bySchweinsteiger in this article. http://www.espnfc.com/chicago-fire/story/3122435/bastian-schweinsteiger-difference-between-mls-and-europe-is-huge

In particular

The league is interesting because it's evident everyone can beat everyone. And sometimes things happen you just don't understand. This might be referee decisions or the running paths or passes of a teammate. It's different than in Europe, but you have to take things as they are." Schweinsteiger also said that while MLS is "very strong" physically there are other things still lacking in the U.S. top flight.
"Not everything is seen that happens on the pitch -- the teammate in a good position, where it might get dangerous, how a situation develops," Schweinsteiger said. "Too many balls are lost as well. But that's normal.
"If this were not the case, the people would not play in the United States but rather in the Bundesliga, Premier League or La Liga. Still, MLS has potential, a lot of potential."

For the next 3-4 weeks. With that timeline he'd be recovering just as the Gold Cup begins. I think he'll still make the squad if it looks like he's recovering well and close to playing as the tournament approaches, Canada doesn't have another striker like him in the player pool (or on the provisional roster).

This week is the annual "MLS teams play in the US Open Cup" week. A few MLS teams play each other but there is always something interesting going on league wise.

DCU beat a beer league team yesterday (but after going down a goal).

Columbus is in Cincy for a derby match. The Columbus fans are actually louder there then they are in Columbus.

All the games are streamed via the MLS website.

******

A strong US domestic soccer structure is important to MLS and to Canada. A strong Canadian domestic soccer structure may take 20 years to get to the point where the US is now but it will bring significant dividends to TFC in the long run.

playing for Cincinnati - as a wingback as far as I can tell - is TFC legend and One Of The Greatest Finishers In The History Of The Modern Game: Andrew Weideman.

So I read an article yesterday where Bruce Arena stated that very few of his main starters will play in the Gold Cup, I was surprised to hear this. I guess he wants to use the games to experiment with players before the next round of WC qualifiers. However he did mention a couple of names who he said he may use and unfortunately one of them was Jozy. It would be great if he didn't use him or Bradley at all so they get some much needed rest and recovery.

molenshtain

Mexico will be sending their B team as well presumably, being that their in the Confederations cup at the same time. Makes sense to go with a more experimental squad.

Could mean Morrow is gone for a month though. Sounding like Arena wants an MLS heavy squad.

Detroit_TFC
06-15-2017, 08:18 AM
Grant Wahl's interview with Arena quotes him saying that he might bring in JA at some point. I'd say that implies he won't be used in the group stage.

Bradley not mentioned although BA does say that "almost none" of the players from the "best possible" USA side would be involved.

Not sure this is the correct thread for this but I can't see any other relevant so here goes...

I just saw Team Canada has elected not to pick Kyle Larin for the Canadian squad for the upcoming Gold Cup on account of his DUI. I have to say I find this madness of the part of Soccer Canada. We are not exactly blessed with talent, however this current crop of players is as promising as we've had for years. To deprive us of our best goal scoring threat is tantamount to throwing away any chance we had of a decent performance at this tournament. We might as well not show up. Granted we would need big performances not only from Larin, but Davies, Edwards, Ricketts, Johnson to make a dent, but to eliminate our best goal scoring threat before a ball is kick just doesn't make sense to me. I know there will be some who think Larin needs to be punished for his actions, but sure that is the function of the law, which I'm sure will not be lienent if the young man is found guilty.

I was quite looking forward to seeing Canada do well in this tournament, but that hope has been destroyed by the high and mighty decision by the Canadian Soccer Federation.

Actions have conquences.... So what he doesn't play in this gold cup, he is young and there will be many more gold cups for him to play in. He has been suspend in the league he plays, the CSA for all of its faults are not that stupid. The thought of putting winning or at least the thought of winning over doing what is the right is not what I expect from my national team.

I'm not sure about most nations, but I know that the Italian national team have a code of conduct and IMO not an bad team to try and imulate. No player is above the team and the rules. Many a time players are not selected due to their actions on and off the pitch. I'm not suggesting the banning of Larin, he just needs to understand that it's an hounor to wear the colours not a right due to talent

So in my opinion yes he should be punished by the law and the decision by the CSF was the correct decision.

Well Edwards is probably going to make Canada's Gold Cup squad himself. So this is actually a chance for Morgan to get some starts while they're both gone.

Which is why Morgan has been worked back into the squad.

*******

On the Cyle Larin thing:

He's from Brampton and Pickering. He did this within 24 hours of a CANMNT in Montreal. This could EASILY have happened here and killed any one of us or our friends or our family members. So, no I don't think its a good idea to let him out before he's gone through every last little bit of necessary education and rehabilitation. Sorry, but a Gold Cup result is not worth endangering all of us, thank you very much.

Arena has already said he's calling in Altidore, Howard & Dempsey for the knock out games. There is a theory he might leave out Bradley but if there is any wobble at all between the midfield and the central defenders, Bradley will go.

I imagine our team without the Canadian and the US guys will still be decent with a midfield of Morgan, Delgado, Cheyrou, Vasquez & Beitashour. Only issue is Spencer beside Giovinco.

Spencer seemed quite slow and a bit hesitant in the previous game, perhaps it was a bit of being star struck playing in front of the big crowd at BMO. I can see Seba becoming a tad frustrated.

sorry to bring this back up but there is a definite need to handle the Larin incident within the football world as well as within the judicial system.

Sports insulates kids who are very good from learning about how to act in civil society. They many times feel well above law because they can get away with so much (I have personal friends from various sports that have gone through this. From hockey to tennis to football it is the case for the very best).

Larin could have killled people out there most definitely and the law will take it's course on that front.

He was supposed to be resting to be ready for an orlando game, not going out and partying til 2am. He has been shit lately (two sitters missed against us he should have hit). What if this is the tip of the iceberg and he really has a problem? Let's make sure he gets his shit straight and becomes a seasoned professional and not a couldabeen washout.

I respect the kids ability and want to see him become the very best striker we've ever produced. It would be a shame to have to quibble over would could have been.

and he's back in MLS now.

I was thinking the same thing last night. I am guessing on balance it is probably better for the Fire (so worse for us), for them to be out now. Apparently they did play a good line-up, leading you to believe they were not trying to lose. But I think that the knocks and rotation required with the extra games is a net disadvantage from a league perspective. Not every team has the same depth that we do!

I think Cincinnati has proved they will be a viable market for MLS, the crowds they have been getting for their USL games and their US Open Cup games regardless of what the tickets cost have been incredible, and really even if they lowered the prices in Columbus and had some freebies do you really think Columbus would pack them in in a smaller stadium than what Cincinnati is playing in? They had over 32000 last night in Cincinnati more than TFC had for a Cup final against TFC's biggest rival the Impact. I will be surprised if Cincinnati is not one of the new teams that joins the MLS in the next round of expansion.

TheGoodson

Sure they pack the house, but at what price point? If the ticket pricing are even remotely viable for an MLS then sure why not have them considered to be a viable candidate for expansion....

But if they have discounted the prices or papered some of the crowd ie giving away a lot of free tickets then I would reconsider what they could actually attend if the fans had to pay MLS prices

ok, sure. if you are trying to look for viable markets, giving away and heavily discounted tickets aren't going to help when you have a $100 million plus expansion fee plus all of the other associated cost is my point. Anyone can get numbers, my point being that if you are going to look just at the attendance numbers that makes it skewed and not true reflection of this being a viable market

The primary hurdle for the Cinci ownership group is convincing MLS bigwigs that their relatively small media market won't be a liability. IMO it's all relative. I suspect noticing that linesmen will be keeping their flags down for any borderline offside decisions they aren't sure about. If you incorrectly raise your flag for offside that stops the play dead, but if you incorrectly keep your flag down the play continues until the review, where in theory the correct call is made anyways.

One can only hope. I think that the introduction of VAR may do away with goal line technology as the VAR crew will be able to contact the 4th official and head official in said circumstances. Either way you look at it, it is a long overdue improvement that is greatly needed. Especially with some of the MLS officials.

Just to clarify the process

There is no "head office command centre" like is done in the NHL.

There is a 5th VAR official at every match, who is a PRO A/R or Ref trained to do VAR work. The Times article has indicated the skill set needed for a VAR is different from a ref and that they fully expect dedicated VAR's to develop over the next few years.

fergiejr
07-21-2017, 08:25 AM
So the VAR decides that the play is worth another look. He tells the head ref that the play should be reviewed. Does the head ref have an option of not reviewing? He has the option of reviewing himself or just taking the VAR Ref's recommendation. I guess if he doesn't take that recommendation it is the same thing as refusing the review.

I guess we'll see how this works out.

We saw VAR at the recent Confed Cup and also men's u20 WC. As FIFA stated, it generally worked but there are changes are needed before it is used for next year's WC.

Some reviews took only 30 seconds while others took 3 minutes. The replays used by VAR were often not shown on TV immediately and sometimes were only shown in the 2nd half. Instead asking for a card, too many players were bugging the ref to look at VAR. The ref still can still make the wrong decision as was seen in the final when a Chilean player should have been red carded or not punished at all but instead was given a yellow for a elbow. VAR called a bit too many offsides on goals that were nitpicky.

And this isn't a business model challenge as much as a publicity stunt in the face of a possible MLS Miami team.

But...hey $4 BILLION!!!!!!

Ok, I kinda forgot about Wilt's manifesto but IIRC that was directed more at creating an alternative pyramid than changing MLS. Point is taken though.

It should also be noted that the same Miami guy also paid a consultant last year to put out a report about how Pro/Rel would be beneficial to soccer in America. He sees NASL as the backdoor into MLS if they can institute pro/rel. I wonder how many NASL owners are also hoping the same thing.

Sounds like Dom Dwyer is on his way to Orlando. Interesting. They must think Larin is on his way to Europe after this season, or earlier maybe. KC must have something brewing to be willing to do that move.

Pro/rel is just a smoke screen and a PR stunt. It's about trying to get hold of SUM rights. That's where the money is.

I don't think deals like this are good for the league. It's like an NBA team trading 5 first round draft picks.

I wonder if Larin is potentially losing his ability to work in the US.

If so, Larin could be on the way to Montreal or Vancouver.

The reply with quote function doesn't seem to be working for me. I would think Orlando are anticipating Larin is off to Europe, no?

Larin wont be sold till the offseason when Orlando can get 2/3 of the transfer fee as opposed to 1/2 now.

Orlando have been chasing Dywer for years.

Get Dwyer now.
Sell Larin in off-season
Extend Dwyer long term

If it doesn't play out like that, i'd be extremely surprised.
