It's that time again. Here are the last polls for reference:

I was feeling pretty good about this year until that Chicago pre-season game. I still feel that TFC is one of the strongest teams in the East, but I also feel that their backline is still prone to laspes that leads to goals. I'm worried that at the halfway point teams will have figured out how to deal with TFC's 3-5-2 and Vanney will scramble around trying to find an alternate formation that will optimise the pieces they have to use. I'm also not sold on Vazquez as the key to our AM woes.

I think they can win 2 of the first three on the road and put together a solid run through the spring. But then I think they'll slump a bit in July and August with a slate of western teams they'll be playing and international call-ups they'll be missing. I think we can get about 13 points of the western teams and 45 points of the eastern teams for a total of 58 points and conference champions. Watch this will be the year my expectations are too high.

I voted 50-53 points, solid playoff team. I don't think our roster construction is perfectly aligned with regular season dominance.

I think if we can have a solid summer despite losing Bradley, Altidore, Oso, Tosaint and maybe even Chapman, Hamilton or Morrow to the Gold Cup then I think we can win the east.

I suspect injuries are going to be more of a factor than last season. We'll see longer stretches without the big names. Despite that, there will be enough points in the bank to contest for conf leadership, but not control the table.

I actually think we'll win the shield, and will have less injuries than last season.

I think the key is squad rotation, and I think we have the depth to win games relying on non-dp players.

Also no one in the east scares me, at least with regards to regular season and I think the strong Western teams will all take points from each other (FCD, Seattle, Portland, LAG).

Dohhhh ...will ever MLS become a normal league, which takes in account the international schedule (= no league games when there are intl. games), or it will remain forever a freak of a league.

It will never be normal with the way the league is formatted, number of teams and schedule etc.

There going to need to split the league in two and cut the number of games down.

I feel really good about this team, but with all the eventual absentees, I'd settle for 54-57 points.

Don't give a monkeys about Supporters Shield. Qualification with this team is what I expect and then is time to reevaluate. Pussplops is meeting expectations for me.

This team I think will flirt with 60 points perhaps take in even more. If we can stay healthy we will be a force. I know everyone in that locker room wants another shot at MLS cup at home, hopefully they can focus on taking care of the backline and letting our goal scorers take care of the rest.

TFC is clearly an elite team with a lot of depth, one of the best in the league. That being said it's really difficult to win the supporters shield. I expect TFC to be just a notch below that. Of course something like a major injury could make TFC fall further down, chance plays a role.

I'd give more monkeys if they had an honour guard for the Shield winners. But that would prolly distract peeps from the "Road to the Pussplops".

Ah well.

I say 56

international duty will screw us again.
If the conclusion to our preseason is any indication - then like last year, we will be complacent towards the end of the season due to a secured playoff spot - which will see us again drop points.

Listening to the MLS podcast, ExtraTime Radio.

They said TFC's points over/under is 55.5 points and all three guys agreed that Toronto will be over. The MLS Analyst said he believes they'll even jump over 60 points.

Also, the 55.5 points was the highest over/under for the Eastern Conf teams.

Interesting!:iagree:

i'm going with 57 - Solid elite team - i'd go higher but with the Gold cup we could even drop to the solid playoff team category - our depth is so much improved that it bodes confidence - excited for the season to begin.

So we are viewed as the second best team of MLS for this season, very close to the best one.

That line on the Red Bulls is a joke. in what universe did they seemingly get better from last season, so much so that they're the favorites for the cup?

Detroit_TFC
02-28-2017, 12:07 PM
Margins were tight in the East last season and this year will be more so, because Chicago won't suck as much and Atlanta will grab some unexpected points (I think they will buck the new team terrible form tradition). The race for the EC top 2 will go all season long.

OgtheDim

NYRB didn't get better. People just bet on them due to name recognition so the odds drop.

ah. assumed those were initial offerings. kinda makes more sense I guess. still can't imagine why anyone think's they'll be all that good this year. I see a ton of last year's Columbus in this red bulls team; very good system team thinking the system will do all the work and they don't need to improve their personnel. There's a lot of crazy stuff going on behind the scenes there too.

I could see them not being very good at all this year.

I'm being naively optimistic: Elite 54-57 points. You would think I hadn't been following this team for a while. We shall see, the league is always very competitive and some other teams also improved.

I'm surprised I guessed correctly for the 2016 season, and that was the most popular choice in last year's poll. (52 to 55 Points: Solid Playoff Team; TFC ended with 53.) TFC fulfilling expectations, what alternative universe are we inhabiting?!?

Oldtimer

I hate to say it but the Impact are excellent value at 30-1.

FC Dallas are also good value. They are more likely to be the eventual winner than Red Bulls or TFC.

ensco
03-01-2017, 06:59 AM
^I think those odds are kind of saying the following: there is a clear tier of 6 top teams (4 in the west, 2 in the east) who are all roughly equal, but with twice as many elite teams in the west, it's going to be twice as hard to win MLS Cup for any of those western teams.

I think Orlando at 66-1 is the team I would take a flutter on. They did what we did a year ago, and spent all their offseason dough/resources on their back line. Plus they will have an elite home field setup in that new stadium.

Okay, we're a quarter of the way into the season and it looks like TFC is on track for 60 points. Enough for a Conference Title? Probably. Enough for a Supporter's Shield? Probably not.

Initial B

At the Halfway point for the season now, and at their current pace, TFC will end up with a record-setting 70 points and undoubtedly the Supporters Shield. I'm not sure that's sustainable, but we're seeing something special here this year. I'm expecting a letdown in the second half, but wow this year has been an awesome ride so far.

Auzzy
06-24-2017, 10:18 AM
Wow, it really is the halfway point, 17 out of 34 games played, 35 points, that's nuts. We had a heavily front-loaded schedule including some brutal stretches. Here's a nice summary:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Toronto_FC_season#Results_summary

So far 9 home games for TFC (no losses), 8 away games, so fairly balanced that way. I.e. at least in terms of the home-away balance, we don't have to expect a much harder time in the 2nd half of the season. Also TFC is one of only two teams in MLS currently with a +.500 away record, generally unusual given MLS's tough travel schedule. (LA Galaxy is ++.500 away, but pretty bad at home. I fully expect them to make a 2nd-half run though.)

A Chicago - Orlando tie this weekend would be nice, fingers crossed...

What's also crazy, on the same Wiki page, scroll up a bit: KC is the only West team among the top-five overall teams in the league (on both points, and PPG). What a change from previous seasons, when the West was usually the best. I do expect that to even out more in the 2nd half of the season though.

I just hope TFC can avoid post-Gold-Cup hangover or injuries... Please no summer or fall swoon.

OK but this here is truly weird: everybody has us atop of the Power Rankings, and it doesn't even scare me. Is the PTSD starting to wear off? I dunno, crazy talk I know.

We are now at the 3/4-point of the season and TFC is on track to score 69 points. Once again, it looks like they are going to beat my prediction. I feel like this has been a dream season so far. We need to remember this when we get back to having seasons like 2013...

The funny part about the options above, (knock on wood) at this point in order to NOT hit 62 points this season (and the top option of the poll) we would need to average 1 point per game for the rest of the reason, which means playing like DC united or LA Galaxy. That said, I don't think that 62 is going to necessarily win the shield this year (NYCFY would hit 63 at their current season pace, and their current form is better than that).
