This is a toast to a small group of long timers. If this description fits, here's to you.

Here's to you if you read the Esky's World blog, if you remember Ricky Titus, and John Carver's reaction to him, and John Carver's reaction to Jeff Cunningham missing against Montreal from six inches out (paid back now in spades, baby!)

Here's to you if remember Dero to Celtic, the Fuad rating system, Fake Tom (OK that's a bit self-important, but it's that kind of night!), the rollerblader, and if the names Joao Pinto and Paul Dickov make you laugh.

Here's to you if you can close your eyes and see Amado Guevara curling a free kick onto the top corner, or Javier Martina taking a long kick from Frei on a frigid day and burying it. Same if you can see Torsten Frings lofting a beautiful ball 50 yards right on the button to Luis Silva at Skydome.

Here's to you if you have a soft spot for Mo Edu, Marvell Wynne, Sam Cronin. Danny Koevermans.

Does it give you a chuckle to think about Adam Braz hitting the Cinesphere with his free kicks, and Andy Welsh scoring in the rain, and Andy Iro getting beaten like a rented mule, or Nick Labrocca scoring on a 40 yard free kick, that was pushed by a 40 mile an hour wind?

If yes, here's to you, and thank you.

Thanks for sharing the ride, and making it great.

Gabe Gala against Real Mardrid ...some that were more down than up. But we're all part of this journey that got us here. I am still shaking my head. Did tonight really happen. Oh that Dichio Goal, oh how we were all newbies to this. 10 years in the making with 185 people with the honor of wearing the TFC badge.

Oh whatever happened to Martin Brittain...the trialist that seemed to just stick around. What is Mo thinking tonight ( :

tfcfans

I almost wrote the same thing.....Andy Welsh really sticks out to me for some reason, like someone decided to let their little brother on the pitch to play.....the old discussion boards pre-2008, the dreaded porn hack which was confusing to most of us who couldn't figure out how a TFC message board decided to have, shall we say "interesting" graphic content.....and frankly going all the way back to 2007 and having to explain what the heck MLS soccer was to way too many people and have them look at you like you were some sort of alien.....

A special note for me was that this was the team that I decided to make my daughter's and my own special bonding ritual (she was born in 2005), to share that with her tonight was incredible.....she literally has grown up with this team.....may she see the culmination of 10 years on Dec 10th - just past her 11th birthday as well - I never thought that we would see soccer played after her December 7th birthday...incredible.....

Beautifully said, Ensco.

Four of us tonight walking out, hoarse and a little limp, talking about how we've waited for a night like this and began bouncing memories like those around.

Beer's flying down on that bozo who scored the first MLS goal at BMO.

Marvell Wynne, the human crab with a centre of gravity in his ankles. Making an amazing chip, run and nutmeg to set up a goal against Colorado for Danny Dichio.

Andy Welsh's well-placed header in soft rain like tonight for a win against Houston, with DeRo's family sitting across the stairwell.

Jim Brennan rocket top shelf against Columbus.

Carl Robinson's hilarious arm-waving goal celebration that his daughter dreamed up.

Standing behind the goal and watching Guevara's kick bend and bend and bulge the net.

As good as it was to see Dichio score that first goal, his last one of that first season seems to linger longer in the memory. After New England (Parkhurst?) scored from midfield in the first half, too. Running onto the pitch with my son at the end, both laughing and jumping. Great day.

And a headless chicken named Jackson.

Tonight will be long remembered, too.

Favourite Marvell Wynne memory: game vs. Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo hadn't read the Coles Notes on Wynne. Ronaldo kicks the ball past Wynne on one side, hoping to sprint past him on the other side & collect his own ball. Wynne turns on the jets, Ronaldo has no chance, the crowd roars...

I just wanted to stop by and thank all the RPBs past and present for giving me hope every year regarding TFC.

I was a day one (er) myself -- the first game against Chivas, seeing Alecko Eskandarian get his bell rung, Dichio 24, Carl Robinson's goal celebration.
I was on the Columbus trips in 2008 and 2009 (especially 2009 when we took over that fucking parking lot!!).

I saw Laurent Robert score a goal on a free kick, Amado Guavaras magic while he was here and yes, Rick Titus signing a one day contract to play with TFC because we were missing 9 regulars!

But the bad hits kept coming and sucking the passion out of me -- the 5 - 0 game against NYRB, The DeRO check signing (I was at that game!) The Aaron Winter Years ("the worst team in the world"), Jermaine Defoe, but I would always come back to these boards and read the TFC Trialist / Movement Thread, the game threads and passionate discussion and it would inspire me to march on in spirit with the RPB.

It's because of you guys, not just the players on the field, that we're here today.
That the celebrations are just as hard and passionate as they were on Day One.

A tip of the hat to you RPB, I will be with you on Saturday, December 10th.
Just have to tune up my voice. :-)

Do you still sing the Jim Brennan song?

Pookie
12-01-2016, 08:04 AM
Standing there with my son last night, who is now in high school.

I was thinking about his first game as a 5 year old. How I had to remind him that the words he heard couldn't be repeated to his teachers. How we would kick a ball around in the parking lot and start the day happy but go home frustrated.

Of the days of the free pub crawls when Brennan, Serioux, Conway, Wynne, Dichio and others would stop at our table. Of talking to Gabe Gala about his goal against Real Madrid.

Of seeing Adrian Cann at an airport in Florida preseason and his surprise when I knew who he was and then telling my son about it and his eyes wide... you met Cann? And later that season, Cann stopping by the table at another pub crawl and him telling my son that he played for the same coach.

Of Mike Toshack apologizing to us on the way out of a New England hotel room on an early Sunday morning after a bad performance against New England. And the puzzled look he had when we saw Preki that day, wished him luck and Preki replied "thanks, we'll need it." A road trip my son still talks about.

We've had some down moments too. From green protests to hearing ticket plans from the Exec to our own decision to give up season seats after all the money we gave away when we couldn't do the same with the tickets.

But last night? That was a long time coming. And belting out the chants, standing virtually all game in a non standing section and seeing that result, that effort, that passion and to be there with my son?

Nothing but nothing but right. I'm taking that one to the grave.

Who said playoffs were dumb? ;)

Great post, ensco.

I remember all save the first three sentences of your post, but there was a lot of darkness and hopeless feelings before we entered the light. The one image for me that stands above all the others is Kevin Payne at a press conference announcing he was taking the reigns of TFC, surrounded by a stunned trio of Anselmi, Cochrane, and Mariner. At that point I think I realized that the long nightmare would soon be over and I started to hope again. The damage those Three Stooges did to the organization was incalculable, but fortunately MLS stepped in before it was terminal. I don't imagine this franchise would still be here if they remained in power for a full decade.

The infamous Chivas game where TFC had to dress Rick Titus as an emergency signing.

Rick Titus was a beer league player aged 40 who was a truck driver and had once played for the Toronto Lynx. TFC could not pay him for the game or he would have lost his amateur status.

Another memory is Jeff Cunningham. The photo says it all.

Now that it's been 10 years for TFC, I would like to officially nominate that "pylon" post by Chevy as Post of the Decade.

Four players made their one and only appearance with the Reds in that match. As mentioned Rick Titus, TFC Head Scout Tim Regan, Diaz Kambre on a one day loan from Vancouver and Derek Gaudet who spent the season with TFC as end of the bench reserve.

Well Said and hope to see you at Joe's come Saturday!

I've been here since day one.

I wasn't ever going to get TFC season tickets, I wasn't that interested. I'd been to a couple of Canada international games and there was hardly any crowd, so I didn't think the crowds would be good for a TFC game and atmosphere "nothing like I used to know back in England". It got to the end of December 2006 (it was around the 28th if I recall) and I get a call from a good friend who asked me if I wanted to get a season ticket with him. I thought about it and decided I'd go for it - but when I tried to call him back he wasn't available. I looked on ticketmaster and there were only TWO tickets available in the south end - one single in section 113 and one single in 117. I knew NOTHING about TFC at that stage and certainly nothing about the supporters groups and where they were located.

I picked a single in 113 as it looked a little more central. I think it was actually the last day you could actually get a season ticket. I spoke to my friend the next day and it turns out that he didn't get tickets - he had "changed his mind". So I got a ticket on my own and didn't actually know anybody else who wanted to go or had season tickets. I thought 'well, I'll go and see what its like and if its crappy I'll just have that one season and not renew'.

I then read about the RPB's and U-Sector and found out that the U-Sector was in 113. That actually worried me quite a lot as I normally attend games in non supports groups areas (my season tickets for Oxford were at the side of the field away from the rowdy people). So going to the first TFC game was nerve-wrecking for me - I knew nobody else attending and I was going to the "supporters area".

But that first game was unbelievable. Fantastic atmosphere and noise - I remember the boots stomping on the metal south end steps and it was deafening. The U-Sector and RPB's were great - not rowdy but enthusiastic and friendly and welcoming. I met several people in seats around me and they seemed nice people - some English, some Canadian. They have been next to me ever since in the same seats.

That first season - we all know on the field it sucked - but in the stands it was electric. I have some memories that will live with me forever from that first season - Dichio - seat cushions - the squirrel - that dude who tried to run on the field and shit himself(!) - that unbelievable goal from Dichio on the last day of the season. I was hooked for life. I think I've missed around ten TFC games ever since. I still have my original seat in 113, row 15 - although I've got two extra tickets so my wife and family can sometimes attend also - but I will keep the seat in 113 until I die (and my son will inherit it).

The years since 2007 are a bit of a blur - there have been some brief highs, and many lows. But that's part of being a football supporter. My "home team" Oxford United have spent almost their entire existence in the lower leagues apart from 3 seasons and one win of the League Cup at Wembley in 1986. I know that highs are brief in football supporter terms.

The game on Wednesday stands out as one of my best games I've ever attended. The drama was better than any movie I can ever imagine. It makes the last ten years seem like a second and it drowns out ANY low I've experience with TFC. Andy Welsh, Andy Iro, Aron Winter, they are all minor parts now - this game is what it is all about as a supporter.

I drink the toast with all the SSH who have been there since day 1. We deserve this and we should enjoy it. CHEERS :)

Who remembers late night post match drunken footy at Lamport?

Yep, I remember hoping a 15 foot high wooden fence (in the rain) and sliding down and bonking my head. Then it was like "I must get to the door to open it before I black out" and everything started spinning.

Then Joe & Kim showed up with water and snacks. Love those two!

I fondly recall year one, when it was so rare to see anyone on the street wearing a TFC jersey that I would always greet and high-five them!

I remember my buddy Vic, post-game in the lounge, figuring out how to jimmy the lock on the draught beer keg after staff closed up and left. Handing out coffee cups full of beer until security kicked us out. Good times!!!

These posts elicit tears of laughter and of wistful remembrance.

This is a nice thread. I was thinking about the start of it for me. MLS Cup Finals 2006. Handful of RPB and Usector people at the first get together of TFC supporters. Maybe 30 people at (I think) Scallywags. The beginning of this mental TFC family we still have today. Glad I stuck around for it.

The first two or three years, there was all kinds of use of "FC", "the FC" (Anselmi used that a lot) ... Cathal Kelly called us the Torontos, which was seriously annoying

Something we did here that's just become part of the paradigm is make the name "TFC" stick. I don't know if someone has an interesting story about this, I suspect RPB leadership sold it to some players, and that turned the tide, but we fought for that name, and we made it stick. (I remember there being amazing unanimity around the name TFC, seems like we fought about everything else though!!)

I kind of miss that - people yelling across the street, asking what the score was.

I've posted this a couple of times, but in 2008 I went to Lollapalooza in Chicago. We had a game on one of those days so I wore my jersey. Literally from the moment we walked into the park to the moment we left, people were chanting/singing TFC chants at me.

Hope you guys don't mind, I haven't posted in a long time, been reading this thread and thought I'd like to share my bit...
Wednesday night I came down solo to meet the guys, and as I came up from the GO station, I had to stop and take a long look at BMO, I then text my buddy that was already there "Oh man dude! I just came out of the tunnel and had a flashback to home opener 2007!", his response, "same bro". I then thought to myself, tonight is for every up and down, and down, and down we ever lived through here in the last 10 years, for sticking it out and never going anywhere, because it was never an option, especially since it was always a guaranteed good time no matter the outcome! And a small part of me too said it was for all the people who in 10 years constantly said "you still waste your time and money on those losers?", YUP!

To be honest, I would've never imagined in a million years, we win the regulation part 3-2 and head to ET. But yet, I found it fitting. And as a part of me heading into that extra time kept telling me it was gonna end like every other season does, in bitter disappointment (especially after last seasons finish), there was another part of me that said, no chance man, we're gonna find the extra gear and crush these fuckers! I think the emotions I, my friends and every single other person around me experienced all night and finally erupting for those 2 goals were (not sure if I can explain correctly) like all 10 years of frustration, a bitter rival, etc, boiling over. I don't know if we'll ever get to experience or feel anything like that again, (I hope we do!).
No one knows what the 10th holds, but don't get me wrong, jobs not done yet, and if all goes in favour of us, Dec 10 will be a date more remembered and it will be a whole new set of feelings for all of us. I can't wait!

There is a concept in behavioural psychology called the “peak-end rule,” which holds that our memories of any given experience are defined not by how we felt about it moment to moment, but how we felt as it ended and how it felt at its most intense. Say you go to Italy, and the first five days are blighted by rain, but the last two are ablaze with sunshine. You are likely to remember that trip far more fondly than had it been the other way around.

TFC supporter life is right now the all-time "peak-end rule" experience.

That rain-soaked night vs. Houston in 2007. Winning on an Andy Welsh header. The GO station after the game, "Eastbound, stand up". "Westbound, stand up". Then when the train reached Union, a bunch of bewildered Jays fans get on the train to be serenaded to "Who the "f@ck" are Blue Jays, who the f@ck are Blue Jays, nah nah nah nah". - the blonde woman in 111 wearing very low cut shirt showing lots of cleavage, and all of the corner chanting at her "blond-ie, stand-up!" (quite sexist by today's standards, but was still pretty hilarious)

Remember when the TFC season opener vs Columbus one year was going to be on tape delay so Parkie hooked up a computer to the AV system at Joe's so it could be streamed live. Oh the things we do.

The one memory that makes me laugh time and time again is Bright Dike's 25 yard strike against SKC where his boot ended up in the net and the ball landed in St. Louis lol

Who was the Serbian international who was supposed to be our first DP signing in '07? anyone remember? it's been bugging me all day.

It wasn't Darko Kovacevic was it?

Not sure if this is the guy you are referring to Savo Milošević, he was a striker who played for Villa at one time, but he was defo strongly connected with us at one time

This would be cool for the trip from Joe's to the stadium on Saturday!

August 5, 2007 Beckham came to Toronto (he didn't play due to an injury). To mock the media hoopla the RPB rented a double-decker bus to arrive in style:

Our group is much bigger now, we'd need 5 buses!

It would be cool, but I don't think we have the time to organize something like this. Besides, I'm hoping to be celebrating an MLS Cup parade after the 10th (and I don't even like parades)!

This team (and this group!!) has been such an integral part of one third of my life. And so much has happened in those ten years, that I can't imagine my life without TFC.

Changing jobs while also in the midst of a home renovation has seriously cut into my time online both here and on other soccer sites, but I'd like to share my thoughts on the last ten years and I don't think there could be a more appropriate thread than this.

I remember the weeks and months prior to the official announcement by MLSE that Toronto would be bidding for an MLS expansion club and back then speculation was rampant about the details. We had no stadium. We had no coaches or players. We didn't even have a name. But I think most of us just had this feeling that MLS in Toronto had the potential to be something BIG. Though funnily enough, when this group had our first ever meeting at the Overdraught on Front Street and were talking with some of the TFC sales reps, we were offered first pick at 50 seats in the Supporters Section - and myself and many of us were really worried that we wouldn't come close to getting that many RPB members signed up before the first match. Hindsight is 20/20, right?

Anyway, the years that followed are probably known by most. We had a lot of ups and downs both our supporters group and the club. I don't think many would deny that were quite a few times when TFC was just downright awful. Coaches and players came and left - with a few very vocally highlighting their discontent toward the club. But changes were eventually made and I think most were for the best. I think the management staff we have now is one of the best in the league. Tim Bezbatchenko is a man who deserves of lot of credit for how this club has been reshaped in the last few seasons and I truly hopes he will continue his role with TFC for many more years to come.

It's been a long ten years as a supporter. I've met a lot of friends over that time and was lucky enough to make quite a few road trips with them. Kansas City immediately comes to mind as just a great experience for me, but I was in Montreal for the Miracle as well, and made the trip to Columbus twice amongst others. So many memories. Like picking up a ball in Kingston and bringing it to Joe's for an impromptu kickabout at 11pm at Lamport. You know, I think I must have broken into BMO Field at least three times during it's construction just to get a look at the place from the inside. A few others I know did as well. I remember taking a banner from the first away match viewing at the Elephant and Castle and bringing it to the stadium just so I can return it and see the inside of the TFC offices and locker rooms by the staff.

I don't really know where I'm going with this. I can't speak for anyone else, but in many ways, TFC has been the one constant in my life over the past decade. Relationships have come and gone (just like Head Coaches!), there have been times of illness in my family, a few deaths, but also the birth of my daughter in our second year. True story - I wore my jersey in the delivery room and was able to make the game the day after she was born.

All I can say is that, honestly, the result of Saturday's game probably won't mean nearly as much to me as it probably will for others. I mean, obviously I'd love to see another high-scoring win and have the boys hold up that cup on our home pitch, but just being there will be the ultimate experience as a supporter and I am completely pumped for the match.

Does anyone else remember that absolutely absurd song the barenaked Ladies made for us in year two or three? IIRC it was part of a league wide branding effort, every team got a "theme song" made by an artist or band from the area. They were all objectionably terrible works, but there was beauty in the failure. They were all at one point archived somewhere but I'm not sure they're still on the internet. I'd love if someone could find it.

John Molinaro wrote today this poignant piece:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/toronto-fc-tfc-mls-cup-major-league-soccer-seattle-sounders/

The story about the iconic player being frozen out, that can only be about Mo benching Dichio and claiming he couldn't fly (John, if you see this, no need to comment, you left it the way you did for a reason!)... sometimes we fans don't realize the personal cost to the reporter in just reporting obvious facts.

Thanks to John: I'm sure I am not the only one who recalls his "farewell" to TFC and this beat. Thanks for sticking it out.

Have not posted much lately. My negativity and pessimism was a reflection of my dissapointment and frustration with a team that was stuck in the mud for so many years. I admit I used this forum as a sounding board, and reading some of those posts now is embarrassing. I applaud the rpb and other supporters for sticking with the team.
