View Full Version : Cunningham to Norway

Per Ives, there is interest in "The Useless One" from teams in Norway. Knowing that he likely will turn things around once he gets dealt I would be happy to see him leave MLS.

http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2008/07/barrett-in-salt.html#more

As for Jeff Cunningham, the word I'm hearing is that there is interest in the Jamaican-born striker from several clubs, including from some teams in (yes, you guessed it) Norway. A move within MLS seems unlikely since A) Toronto already has three first-round picks next year, B) Toronto already has a boat-load of allocation money and C) Toronto will likely use the international player slot Cunningham vacates in order to bring in an international forward.

Sounds too good to be true .... doesn't it? This was a nice surprise .... perhaps why JC is treating him like shit in hopes he will be willing to move to Europe.

1/2 of zero is zero

if something like this were to happen, it would be like Welsh's deal (ie an assignment of the contract)

I hope this is a ploy to drive up his value. Mo says Cunningham could stay.

I'm not sure about the salary part. I thought it was after a certain date we kept the salary regardless what we did with the player?

That quote is from the "media Scrum" that you can view on TFC TV. When he made the comment, it sounded to me like the comment was added as an afterthought so they wouldn't come off sounding like they hated the man.

Good point, I saw the article was dated today and assumed the quote must be recent.

You are thinking of the guarunteed salary....say he gets released then yes we would be stuck with this salary against the cap.

If he goes and plays for another team in the MLS the balance of his salary will count against the other team's salary cap. If he goes to another continent, MLS won't be paying his salary anymore, so whatever is left will be freed up.

Unless of course MLS agrees to pay his salary while he is in Norway (i.e. a loan deal) then I guess we'd still be paying. Can't see that happening though.

Maybe a little more hope here about Norway after doing a little digging ..... this little tidbit from an old article regarding a former Columbus player making a go in Europe ...

"Like any potential jobseeker, his break came through hard work an a bit of luck. West was in Germany trying out for some second-division Bundesliga teams when he ran into Jeff Cunningham's agent, who speaks Norwegian. Soon after, he arranged a trial with Fredrikstad F.K., a tradition-rich team that recently won promotion back into the Norwegian first division after nearly 20 years in the lower flights.

Sounds like Mo trying to save face for signing him in the first place, which is pretty unnecessary and venal.

if you dont become a bad player overnight..... then what the FUCK is up with Jeff?

how many more chances can we afford to give him?

when/if he leaves i wish him the best. i dont hate the guy. i don't think for a second he's not trying. i think he's just as frustrated as us. even with his hands on his hips. lol.

i've been hoping since i can remember that he gets his shit together. i remember during the montreal game when i saw him coming on i was so relieved. maybe this is his time to finally break the slump! COME ON CUNNY!!!!! but nope.

how much longer can we wait?

I'm not sure how the MLS cap works, so maybe someone could explain what I'm missing.

The transfer fee would be split my the team and the league right? So MLS gets some cash, and MLSE gets some cash. How does this help TFC, since due to the cap MLSE won't be spending any more money on the team.

S_D
07-29-2008, 08:57 AM
^^ MLSE doesn't get their portion of the transfer fee, TFC does.

The cash goes to the league first, then MLS sends TFC their portion as allocation cash which can be used to spend on players.

I can't remember how much offhand but there are limits on how much can be used as allocation towards salary. The rest has to be spent on infrastructure such as academy etc.

I don't think we woud have to worry about that though because lets face it, we won't get that much (if any at all) to transfer his ass out of here.

1/3rd to league, 2/3rds to TFC. Half of the 2/3rds can be used as allocation (up to 500k). The rest of the 2/3rds can be used as transfer fee payment (limit?), or has to be used to develop the academy or players in some other fashion. The 2/3rds is held "in trust" by the league so that it doesn't go line the owners pockets.
