This game is one I've been waiting for since October. It's their home opener and they are flying high. I expect a statement game from the guys who were with the team last October. Seba will have extra motivation after what happened post match. Drogba won't have such an easy time with our back line. I expect Moor and Perquis to play him tight. The one that worries me is Piatti. This has all the makings of game of the week. I'm saying 3-2 TFC.

Them and The Strumbellas are destined to really breakout this year.

I'm not optimistic.

Montreal is probably the most complete team in MLS so far. Only real weakness they have is that Drogba is not match fit yet.

It'll be interesting to see how TFC defence performs. Drogba creates so much room for Piatti to explore space. Piatti can hurt you in so many ways if you give him a little bit of room. He's just as dangerous as Drogba.

Even Kyle Bekker is flourishing under Biello. And TFC doesn't do very well at the Cheese Factory. 2-1 Mtl.

I'm not optimistic either. Not due to TFC problems, I think things are coming together nicely. But rather, Mtl seems to have a lot going right and it will be too much to handle. 3-1 Mtl.

I've seen some people say this could be a high scoring game. If TFC can put in 2 or more, that will make me happy even if on the losing end of final score.

There should be no lack of motivation on our part for this one. Now that we have a competent back line and a solid goalkeeper, we might be able to earn a result this time.

04-19-2016, 11:41 AM
I get the feeling that this one is going to hinge on containing Drogba and Piatti. I think our much improved defence will be able to mostly control Drogba and Bradley and Johnson will tag-team Piatti. Still, it's their house and you have to respect it and the energy the fans bring. I don't think they'll win if they bring a 4-4-2 - Vanney needs to bring back the 4-3-3. I'm thinking 1-1 if TFC is lucky, 1-2 if they're not.

Pint
04-19-2016, 11:56 AM
None of the guys on the team last year are going to forget being embarrassed in Montreal, Seba isn't going to forget getting into it with an impact fan after the game and the new additions are not going to take the 1st chance they have to play in front of a large mass of supporters lightly.

To make it simple: This isn't just another game.

I have a feeling we're going to lose, mostly because we're going to try to sit back and be defensive and hit on the counter, but Montreal is going to swarm too much and we're not going to be able to. Hoping I'm wrong.

Forecast calls for a high of 12 Celsius and sunny on Saturday, though I'm guessing by kick-off time it may drop a few degrees. I think most people are aware of Montreal's current form this season - They are leading the East with 12 points and a record of 4-2-0, and coming off a 2-1 road win against Chicago last Saturday. That said, TFC's starting to climb up the standings as well with the road win against DC. Either way, they're probably gonna be our toughest opponent thus far in the season. Would love to see a high scoring game like GoodSon mentioned above, but not entirely sure that's gonna be in the cards.

Hope we fucking trounce them, though. I love seeing TFC win in Montreal. It's almost as good as seeing them win at home. :D

"Good" is a bit ambiguous in MLS, where any team can beat any team on a given day... but they do seem to be a strong squad, no doubt about that.

Gotta admit, Bekker has been surprising me. TFC has a history of playing okay players in the wrong position or in the wrong way such that they suck balls. Bekker is looking like a serviceable DM! Our use of him as a box to box was probably a misallocation. He has no business shooting at goal lol

I haven't seen enough to comment on his current play but the biggest issue with him previously was defensive work-rate. He would not dig in and challenge or chase down opposing players in the midfield when required. Frequently looked like he jogged behind the play. His offensive skill set in no way justifies a one-way player.

So I'm not sure how he'd be fitting in as a DM right now. That would seem contrary to a lot of what I've noticed previously.

Alexander was a divisive guy in NYRB if only because some days he looked awful and others brilliant. Bekker has looked way more active this season; I think Biello sat him down and schooled him on how being a great Canadian means fuck all until you actually do something with it, which requires running.

If we come out flat, we're fucked. If we come out hyped for some amp, like most of our heroes don't appear on no stamp? Fuck yeah, we can beat Montreal.

agree. However we really need to stay compact and prevent midfield overrun with Piatti unleashing Drogba at will or speedster Oduro beating offside trap. One small tactical adjustment will do enough tricks to confuse limp act defense. The will double or triple team Giovinco like they've done last year. Vanney need to give clear instructions to let Osorio, Delgardo and Altidore to shoot on sight of goal if they can make it on target. This will actually take advantage of spaces created by attention to Seba. If limp act try to adjust and push up higher to take away mid range shots openings, Bradely and Osorio will through ball Seba in with ease to torment their keeper. At least earn more FK right around edge of box for Seba curlers.

Either way. Take the game to them is the key to win.

This team has improved defensively since the last time we faced this team. However, they have some real offensive weapons that will test our back 4.

On the flip side, we also have some offensive weapons and we've played well so far this year, all things considered.

I would love to see a win, but I would be happy with a draw and no injuries.

I'm confident Irwin and our back line will shut the door on montreals attack. We might concede 1 goal at worst. Giovinco will draw in 3-4 players while he chips the ball over to an open Jozy and that will be the game winner. Book it.

If we can find some creative guile at advanced midfield we'll have a team here. Really happy with the way our defence has gelled this season. The conundrum for me is Michael Bradley. There is no doubt he stiffens the side defensively playing deep as a defensive midfielder, however I pine to see him further up the park where we can utilize his ability to unlock defences. I am tempted to push him further forward and utilize Cheyrou or Johnston in the holding role.

However as the saying goes, if it aint broke....

I know we've won more meaningful games, but this was close to an all-time performance.

Absolutely. Incredibly organized throughout the game and nearly every player put in one of their top performances of the season. Beitashour was all over Piatti, who did about nothing all game, Shipp was so invisible they had to pull him off, Bradley and Johnson were roaming and shutting down lanes as well as they have this year. The defending on Drogba was fantastic as well - there's not a CB in the league that will prevent him from taking down those long balls, so the best you can do is contest to make it difficult for him, and force him to lay the ball off, force other players to beat us. And again our organization on tracking the runs for those layoffs was awesome. This CB pairing has real promise. Perquis is the aggressor that deals with most crosses and marks target men, Moor is the guy that sees the play and keeps everyone on their toes and sweeps away the leftovers (about time he starts getting some Defender of the Year hype, by the way).

The only guy I thought was close to having a weak game was Osorio. He still did well in the build up and ball retention but he kind of wilted in key moments. Altidore was good again, should've scored on that last chance, but made a difference up front and crucially took pressure off Giovinco.

2 shots on target allowed, no real huge chances allowed, while we generated 4-5 good scoring chances, and even possession was just about split... our best performance this year, easily.

SoccMan2
04-23-2016, 05:28 PM
Two good solid defensive performances, I've have always believed that the way this team was ever going to improved was if they improved thwor goals against and they are doing that dramatically so far, this team has always lacked a good center back and they finally have that in Moor, what a difference he makes back there. Bradley finally playing the proper position and it shows. When they get home they should just keep playing this kind of soccer, I don't care that it's not attractive , after so many years of losing if this is the style that wins games then keep doing it home or away.

I think that overall, we worked well as a team, and we were able to bring home a much needed victory. One thing that I can definitely, say about this rivalry is that is a heated one, and I don't know why, the main reason, being, because, we have stepped up our level of our attraction towards one another, that is the Montreal and Toronto Passion that has always united one of us together through hockey or our mutual culture. Is the rivalry, a heated one? Of course, and absolutely. Is it a bad one? No. Has the style of of play been down trodden upon throughout the MLS, probably not. However, what we need to maintain to keep doing, is to ensure, that we continue to bear fruit to the witness that we have good soccer in Canada and North America, and that the only thing missing less is a little bit more of ass wooping. And that doesnt mean, George. St. Pierre.

Bradley on Vanney: "Greg deserves all the credit in the world. He’s sets the tone with how hard he works, how thorough he is." #TFC

I think that may be the first time I have heard one of our players giving credit to Vanney.......nice to head

I hate to say it for fear of jinxing it... but who the fuck believes in that shit right?!? (me sometimes) (but not really because that would be dumb) (yet I still do it) g:D

I think we have a contender on our hands here.

This team is really unlike anything we've seen before offensively, defensively, mentally, and in team spirit.

All signs point to YES.

Where'd you hear that? I didn't see it on the youtube channel or during the match.

A word for our man Giovinco who became the clubs joint top scorer today alongside Dero. His 28 goals coming in only 40 appearances as opposed to Dero's 76 is a quite phenomenal return from the wee man

Long may it continue

On Twitter from Molinaro and in his write up of the game for Sportsnet

Well whether we believe what he said or not it's still the first time I recall any player saying something about Vanney in an interview. So that to me is a positive thing. Plus Vanney sure takes a lot of flack from us at times so credit where credit is due, he got the tactics spot on today. I for one have nothing to complain about today's performance or the way the season has gone so far.

Amazing what happens if you let a guy put his plan in place, give him the players to play his system and give him time to work out the bugs. We've always fired the coach. Always. Fucking always. This time, we didn't. And looking at the way Vanney has handled things lately, he seems to be growing into the job quite well. That's about as good as it gets in our league. I'm very pleased with this organization over the past couple of years. It seems like they've finally extracted their heads from their asses.

What can I say? TFC just made Montreal look like shit on their home opener even though they're one of top teams in east.
Top team in the table, but I think it would be better to say "one of the hot teams in the east" because I don't think they are good enough or have enough depth to sustain that over the course of the season. They have had a good start, though, I'll give you that.

I am soooo glad to be wrong about my prediction. It was pretty much near perfect away game. Drogba and Piatti were pretty much non existent. TFC defence shut down IMFC attack through midfield that IMFC was reduced to long ball to Drogba and hope something happens. Offence created and Giovinco did his thing. One of Jozy's best game in TFC uniform. He held up the ball well and made a lot of good one touch passes and linking up with Giovinco.

You have to give Vanney credit for how well the team has played away to start the season. Sometimes it ain't pretty, but it's getting the results.

What did DeVos call it? "solid if unspectacular"? What a cunt (as an announcer; in Red and white, he's a legend).

One other point: Giovinco absolutely could have taken a shot there at his hattrick and he chose to pass off to Altidore. That's class trying to get his teammate and strike partner on the scoresheet.

This.

Fewest goals conceded in MLS despite playing on the road.

Insane. Insane and lovely.

Until Gio's second goal, I was fully expecting Tobias time. Credit to them, this defense seems to know how to bend but not break.

You know, I think I'm cautiously starting to believe...

Can someone direct me, by PM or other, to where I can get a copy of the match (torrent, ?). I'm in Japan and missed it. Thanks in advance.

Best thing is to sign up to MLS Live, it's pretty cheap and you get all the games.

This. I have MLS Live. But when I travel abroad, I can't sign in. Unfortunately. Thank you for the suggestion though.
