TFC II kicks off their USL season tomorrow. Good opportunity for a look at the squad as TFC is off this weekend.

Schedule: http://www.torontofc.ca/tfcII/schedule

Current roster: http://www.torontofc.ca/players/squad/tfcii

Some notes on the roster this year:

Of our late round draft picks this year, we signed Mitchell Taintor (DEF, 3rd round, 59th overall) and Brian James (MID, 4th round, 80th overall) to USL contracts. Darius Madison (ST, 4th round, 70th overall) was released. Some players to keep an eye on this year (excluding first-team loans) are Wesley Charpie (CB/RB), Raheem Edwards (LM/LW), Skylar Thomas (CB), and Luca Uccello (ST).

As per last year, all USL games are available to stream for free over Youtube. TFC II plays New York Red Bulls II tomorrow at 3pm at Red Bull Arena.

First piece of news, as TFC is off this weekend they've loaned Bono, Bloom, Mannella and Babouli to TFC II for the match tomorrow (http://www.torontofc.ca/post/2016/03/25/toronto-fc-loan-4-players-toronto-fc-ii).

I would guess Babouli and Bloom will likely return to TFC for the match vs. Colorado, while Bono and Mannella will probably stay longer. Note as well Hamilton wasn't loaned since he's with the U-20s this weekend, they play England on Sunday.

From what I saw last year Charpie is really solid I'm tempted to rate him above Bloom

On another note nice to see Stevie Furlano on the squad I remember him from when I was at Barrie SC

Uccello is nursing an injury so he's out, not sure about Charpie but I'd guess the same. I like the harmony between the second and first team, TFC has switched to a 4-3-3 and so TFC II has done the same.

Nah Bono has been decent today. That goal took a deflection off Thomas and wrong footed him, nothing you can do about that. And he saved the PK, unfortunately the rebound came straight out.

Anthony Osorio at LB has been having trouble with Etienne all game and both their goals came down the left side (2nd one the defense fell asleep a bit on a throw in).

Game ends 2-2.

I don't agree at all. He has to cover his near post. The deflection was minimal and on the pk if you cant hold it you parry it out not back in. Bad goalkeeping

reacting going one way then trying to go another way is really hard. split second decision and the ball was traveling pretty fast, no matter how little the deflection.

even getting a hand on a PK is hard, and it's not like you can control where it's being deflected from such a short distance

Sorry but no. Look at the zoomed in replay on the Thomas goal, he's following the angle of the shot and leaning to his right just as Thomas knicks it. He correctly read that the shooter was trying to go across the goal. It's just unfortunate. Bono made a ton of saves in the first half, nothing spectacular but good positioning.

Lets see how they do without the TFC drop downs against somebody like Rochester.

55 showed some quality. The right side from midfield up looked weak, the left side from midfield back was weak. Not much quality in the middle to serve babouli. I was disappointed in Bono for the second half. The penalty call was very weak. Though the USL looks like a don cherry tape vhs from the 90's.

I didn't get to see the second half (power outage in Barrie)!but from what I saw Bono was solid and the midfield really didn't have the interplay I loved last year. the midfield was felt so cohesive whenever I watched them last year in the diamond midfield

55 also stood out to me, very tidy in possession. I believe that was Aidan Daniels who is only 17 years old so good stuff from him. Thought Raheem Edwards was tricky on the counter with some good change of pace. Thomas was also solid at the back. Well earned road point against an older Red Bulls team that was one of the better USL clubs last year. I believe they were short handed as well with a few players away with the u20's.

Interesting, I had lost track of him. As a sidenote, I interviewed the Uccellos when they were 14 and asked my contact who at TFC they would project as ones to watch up to the senior team. The other names were Malik Johnson and Steve Furlano ... so maybe we should keep an eye out for him this season.

Yeah but he wasn't a fullback he was playing in the middle as a box to box sort of guy. He was head and shoulders above every single one of us guy could rocket a shot from 30 yards in u-12

Looking much better this year, some exciting young players looking like they might break out. Last year was really frustrating, they had no attacking flow whatsoever.

Seems the team is coming together, anyone know if improvements we're made to the Vaughn stadium? Only thing more disappointing than the play on the field was the facilities.

As of last Wednesday there were no stands there at all. Compared to the renos at BMO Field and how quickly they are progressing this is pretty slow. Hagglund and Zavaleta loaned to TFC II for their match on Sunday. Honestly, I find this a little odd. It just means pushing other young CBs to the bench. Unless there's a team interested in Hagglund/Zavaleta and they just want to see them play...

They did the same thing with Bloom and Babouli. Hard to get match fit if you never play a game. TFCII serves at the pleasure of TFC. All MLS teams are doing this with their USL. In this case, I think one of Hagglund or Zavaletta is going to be starting the Portland game while the give Perquis the weekend off from the travel.

Shame they couldn't hold onto the lead at the end. Bono has never really convinced me... shouldn't be getting beat low at the near post on a free kick like that, it might have been well placed but it wasn't struck that hard and he cheated a bit to his left, he'll want that one back. At least he made the save at the end to preserve the draw.

Good for Hagglund to grab a goal and Edwards as well from the spot, he's clearly the danger going forward on the team now.

how many people, how was the beer tent?

Stands were very full and the the supporters area was loud all game. I don't know what the capacity was, but i'd say it was at 90% capacity, if forced to come up with a number. Lots of kids, lineups for ice cream and hot dogs were long :) Beer tent at halftime was relatively empty, maybe 30 people at the most - i honestly didn't know it was there until I did a walk around.

Edit: Wife said that Dero was there signing autographs before the game. Caldwell was in the stands, you can see him stand up and cheer in the replay for the Haglund goal. Vanney was there as well - looked like they both had their kids with them. People didnt seem to bother either of them much, which was nice.

Beer Gardens was nice, very large area and can watch match when enjoyed a cold one. 4 beer choices from $5.50-6.50. Wish BMO had these prices :)

Saw Tim in line with his kid for ice cream, no one bothered him (maybe some did not recognize him). If I was in line I would have let the man that brought us Giovinco to the front of the line and even treated.

Great weather, good football, and supporters did a great job bringing atmosphere to the OSA Field.

One of those two numbers are wrong - either the broadcasters underestimated the attendance figures or the field doesn't seat 3500. I'd put my money on the latter not being right. Looking at the highlights from the first half, the stands were quite full. The north half of the stands were packed (which is where I was sitting). And it looks like the south half were full except in the section next to the supporters area - which looked about 1/2 full, but loud.

And it looks like the south half were full except in the section next to the supporters area - which looked about 1/2 full, but loud.

I'd go with 1200. Last year there were a lot more than nine rows of seats although they didn't stretch the entire length of the field. They had what looked like Molson Indy race leftovers 20 to 25 rows of wood/aluminum stands.

Ex-TFC curse exists at USL level too. Morgan misjudged a header, whiffed on it, and Wiedeman had an easy finish at the back post.

Another goal for Cincinnati and they win 2-1. TFC II looks pretty good going forward but the defending needs improvement.

Hamilton didn't get too much to do off the bench but he looked good on the ball with what he got. Chapman had some good moments on the ball as well. Edwards was good again (Dunfield mentioned during the game that Vanney had him training with the first team this week) and so was Malik Johnson. He's one to keep an eye on for the future, he's got a nice touch and quick feet, good in tight spaces and difficult to tackle cleanly.

I thought Babouli was good playing out of position. Lovitz as well at LB. I'm not really worried because most of those guys fill the 18-28 slots on our team. My worry is that none of our homegrowns with MLS contracts are kicking on and improving. Mannella still turns over the ball in bad positions. Chapman's passing and product in the final third is bad for an attacking player, Q can't command his own box, Hamilton?? They all seem to be regressing. I'm not sure if this is on Bent, poor talent identification or because these guys were signed before TFC 2 existed. I think Bez needs to look at this in the offseason and maybe open up spots for guys like Sky, Raheem and maybe Bouchard. Players that can play at USL level and possibly kick on to better things.

OgtheDim

I had high hopes that TFC wouldn't treat USL just as a reserve team league but as a serious separate competition in it own right. That said, seems most MLS teams are doing the same as TFC. Could see non-MLS owned teams calling time on this eventually and leaving, or pushing USL to tighten roster rules.

ag futbol

It's in the MLS team's interest to tighten this crap up as well.

Anyone with even the dimmest view of the future can see developing your young guys is far more important than getting borderline 2nd stringers minutes.

I'll say it again: at a certain point you just have to break through and the 2nd team can't be your safety blanket.

05-05-2016, 10:42 PM
I don't entirely agree with this... it's worth noting we had one of the youngest (maybe the actual youngest) teams in the USL last year, and if I recall correctly a higher percentage of minutes played by Canadians than both Montreal and Vancouver's USL teams.

The biggest issue right now is we have too many CBs on the TFC roster. One or two of them need to be moved. Guys like Mannella and Babouli, or Hamilton, who never would have received a first team contract in the first place if we had an intermediary step between the academy and the first team back then, were always going to get minutes with TFC II this year.

I am deeply concerned the average Canadian has some sort of gender identity crisis identifying as half male and half female.

Edit: Let's not forget depending on how you define "kids" those two opinions may not even be opposed to each other. You can have non-first team prospects which are still old enough to make an impact.

Ah well, you know kids will be kids. The FO handed out boomsticks in the final 30 min or so, and that created a lot of noise. It wasn't really directed at the field, but I think it had the effect that they wanted. The kids in the middle of the stands seemed more into the game, but sadly the teachers started pulling these same kids out of the stands first to get back to the busses. It was a good day to take off work - footie in a smaller venue under a blue sunny sky. And a win to boot!

Gotta wonder how close he is to a first team contract, he's been lights out this season so far. Not worried in the slightest. Results don't matter, it is about developing players for the first team.

This match was the first I've seen of Beckford. He is also 16 and looked very lively in the 20 or so minutes he got at the end. I feel like Hundal has improved each time I've seen him play. I am also a fan of Fraser.

If you look at the rosters TFC2 is fielding teenagers some as young as 16 while their competition are late 20s journeymen professionals. Wilmington's CB #23 who scored the PK has played 5 EPL games for QPR few years ago.

Sunday was the first game I watched this season (besides highlights), team seemed to have much more cohesion then last season and we're able to generate some offense. Last season they we're always on the backfoot scrambling.

Another young player that is looking good is DM Liam Fraser.

I think they look okay, not particularly great overall. Certainly the shuffling is complicating things.

IMO you can't really develop every player on the field. So you kind of have to pick your spots; having career journeymen support the real prospects isn't a bad move.

Results not the bottom line but it's important to be competitive. The B teams elsewhere in the world you see some very mechanical tactical moves for the sake of development (ex. having a winger repeatedly run at a fullback no matter how obvious).

TFC II wins 2-1 vs. Rochester. Uccello came off the bench and scored in the 77th minute, good run to find space and good finish in the box. Johnson played the super sub role too, scored a beauty top corner in stoppage time to go up 2-0, then Rochester immediately scored off a throw in after but then ran out of time.

Simonin was caught wrong side of his man on Rochester's goal, and he also had a late tackle that gave Rochester a dangerous free kick when the game was still 1-0. But he had a lot of good moments as well, multiple times he took charge of a loose ball at the back and skipped by Rochester attackers before playing it forward, and I don't think I saw him misplace a pass. He looks like a midfielder on the ball.

....Simonin was caught wrong side of his man on Rochester's goal, and he also had a late tackle that gave Rochester a dangerous free kick when the game was still 1-0. But he had a lot of good moments as well, multiple times he took charge of a loose ball at the back and skipped by Rochester attackers before playing it forward, and I don't think I saw him misplace a pass. He looks like a midfielder on the ball.

Hmmm...Simonin as a #6? It would be nice to grow our own Bradley replacement by 2018 for during the World Cup.

Been wondering this for a while. Maybe it's an issue with tactical awareness or movement in midfield. He certainly has attributes to be a no. 6 with good vision, passing and tackling.

TFC II ties with FC Montreal 1-1. Jackson-Hamel scored first for them, Jobe was sent off for a second yellow later, then Liam Fraser tied it in the 88th or so minute with a header off a set piece, good delivery from Uccello. Very back and forth game and the 5 minutes of stoppage were especially hectic.

3, although he did score what should've been his first on a phantom offside call.

Louisville by the way is 1st in the East in the USL, so no shame losing to them on the road.

Exciting times for us in terms of attacking prospects... Edwards looks ready to step up to MLS next year, probably more ready than Babouli was this year to be honest. Johnson and Hundal are both performing well as teenagers, and Hamilton is on the cusp of earning some occasional playing time in MLS.

What I'll say is the team seems to be lacking a playmaker, no TFC II player currently has more than 1 assist, Edwards, Johnson and Hundal all have none. USL does appear to be far more strict in terms of awarding assists than MLS, so that does factor in, but it looks like we're largely getting by on individual skill for goal scoring. The defense is pretty weak as well, no real stand out prospects back there I don't think. Overall though, looks like a lot of progress is being made already.

Dude... what? The team is full of 16-20 year olds, and sometimes they play like it. Or would you rather they sign a bunch of 30 year old journeymen that will compete for a USL championship and never sniff the first team?

Just saying!! Ok

They was selling season tickets in a manner that ment come see the USL team compete, but really they should just say come see the first teams future players as they grow.

It's good they play 16-20 but it's not a Toronto/GTA 2nd team, and should not be taken seriously other than to watch the future stars.

What would be nice here is a second team, USL, one what is set up to win, an option if u like when TFC are playing a longs way away.

So enjoy it for what it is, and don't be critical on the kids when they lose as all the best TFC2 guys are filling in for injured first team guys.

TFC II beat Bethlehem Steel 3-2 tonight. Uccello scored off a quick counter following a giveaway about 90 seconds into the game, Jobe scored on a through ball from Hundal and a misplay from the keeper, and Fraser scored on a nice shot off a rebound from an Uccello free kick into the wall. Also, former TFC player Ryan Richter is the Steel captain and he scored on a well-placed free kick a few yards outside the box. Who knew Richter could hit a dead ball. ;)

Mannella is captain, when he doesn't play or start then it's been Thomas. I would say it's both, he's probably the best defender on the regular roster and definitely has the "leader" personality. That being said, defense is easily the team's weakest area in terms of prospects, and I personally kind of doubt Thomas ever develops enough to make an impact at the MLS level. We'll see though.

Speaking of defenders though, as I said I don't see anyone currently on the TFC II roster as being ready, but lately I've heard a little about a 16 year old currently with the academy, Rocco Romeo (great name btw). He was called into Canada's most recent U17 camp and I've seen a few tweets about him (links below), so he's one to keep an eye on in the future.

Most of these young players are on a year and a year (one year contract, one year option) or two years at most. He'd just wait until he was six months off and sign on a free.

Honestly, I think Edwards and Giovinco upfront together would terrorize defenses. Play them as a two or put them on either side of Altidore/hamilton. Takes a lot of pressure off the need for an AM and the kid is so ready. He's like Davies in Vancouver, just at a different level.

MLS seems to have not realize yet that there are a core of talented players who mature younger and you risk them not reaching their true potential if they're held back. Not every kid is going to crack under the pressure.

North America needs to move away from breaking players in at 24 and older because of collage history, football players tend to start playing at a professional level much earlier than other sports.

At his age it's better to get max minutes down there now than spot bench minutes with the big club. Once everyone here is back from injury and we're getting serious down the stretch, there would be no room for him and he'd be buried like Lovitz. He'll get his shot next year probably.

These moves are in anticipation of what's going to happen next year perhaps?

Maybe, but I think they address some short term concerns as well. At least those latest two. The team has a lot of depth at the forward positions so the signing of John might be a bit of a project. But with Irwin injured, both Bono and Roberts have been with the first team, leaving Di Bennardo, who's really 3rd string, as the starting keeper at USL (and they've been calling up an academy keeper to back him up). So Ingham will shore up that spot and TFC or TFC II won't be screwed if another keeper gets hurt before Irwin returns. As for Hodge, as I've said before defense is clearly the team's weakest area and they're trying to make a push for the playoffs, so I'd expect he'll get a lot of playing time in the short term. If he performs well then maybe they bring him in permanently.
