Surely not Hamilton?

notthesun
03-01-2016, 03:38 PM
Let's see what we do for the rest of the week here... but if nobody else is brought in then yes, I actually would start Hamilton up top.

The only way Giovinco can play up top in a 4-3-3 is if he operates as a false 9, which I doubt we go for. So he takes up LW and Endoh likely starts at RW. I don't see another candidate to start in the middle. You want a little size there, so that kind of rules out Babouli, and then you're left with backup midfielders. I suppose Zavaleta would be the next choice, being tall and playing striker in college. But given the choice there you obviously go with Hamilton.

This is gonna be interesting. lol

With all the talk about the new jersey today, anybody know what strip we'll be in assuming NYRB goes with their home white shirt/red shorts? Have we ever worn our full reds when they were in white/red? Seems like a clash since their white top has some red in it as well. Our new away shirt/blue shorts is another possibility but then the white tops would clash no?

Yeah they've made this awkward. NYRB will have their home kit so I would guess our home kit is easier to distinguish. They try and differentiate by tops light and dark. NYRB did have yellow shorts recently though.

"Toronto FC have never won at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls are 5-0-1 all-time vs. TFC in Harrison – the lone draw coming in 2014, a 2-2 result.
The Red Bulls are 9-1-1 all-time in home matches vs. Toronto FC, the only TFC victory coming in 2008 at Giants Stadium."

This is not what I would prefer but...

Seba in the middle, Osorio on the left top, switch Johnson to the right mid and Cheyrou in the left mid.

This is going to collapse down to a 4-5-1 pretty quickly.

Agree, 4-5-1 would be perfect with 3 box to box CM. I think that's exactly what we used when we vs. NYRB last year in October. Beitashour should be good to go as well.

I'm happy with this formation. It will clog the midfield and allow the possibility of a quick counter. I'm probably going to end up in hell but I have to watch the game on my phone during my cousins's sons baptism. I just have to remember not to yell for the first 30 minutes or so. I'm hoping for a result, I want to say 2-1 TFC but I'd be happy with 1 point as well.

I think 2-1 TFC is very possible, the guys are ambitious and they are confident vs. this NYRB team which they beat last year. Personally, I don't see BWP being in-form yet.

anything more than 8 points would be extraordinary, statistically speaking. It's possible we could get more because the 8 teams we're playing aren't very good, but we shouldn't be mad if we get 7-8.

1. I can see Seba playing more as a false 9, the 433 can allow more touches for the CF than the 4231 we saw last year.
2. I imagine that the projected lineup is inaccurate and that Cheyrou will continue in the role he was given last year.

it means the wide forwards has to push up very high to allow Giovinco to play false nine so that Giovinco can get the ball to run at defenders. it also means the the fullbacks have to be more conservative to ensure TFC doesn't get punished on the counter defensively. don't expect much defensive help from the wide forwards.

NYRB has one thing TFC doesn't have. Team chemistry and likely they will play same starting 11 as last year. Only significant loss is CB Matt Miazga to Chelsea, and if it's Zubar partnering Perrinelle, TFC can hurt NYRB. but I think Jesse Marsch will figure out.

We've sucked so much away against NYRB and I don't expect that to change. Esp with NYRB's high press, and a TFC midfield that hasn't found rhythm and turns the ball over a lot.

OgtheDim
03-05-2016, 08:20 AM
The way you beat a high press is with speed on the outside. That's what Columbus did during the playoffs. We could get that from Lovitz and Endoh on the outside of a 4-3-3 but I doubt we'd start Lovitz up there.

I noted that when NYRB came to us in October, for some reason they didn't press.

Most likely NYRB will bung up our middle and that will be that.

Except we don't have much speed in our starting 11... Vanney's switch to 4-3-3 suggests he's expecting the midfield to cover a lot of ground and fullbacks will keep getting aggressively pushed up while somehow maintaining possession.

I know the kinks haven't been worked out yet and the midfield is still a chaos with slow Cheyrou in the middle. Love Cheyrou's passing ability. But in 4-3-3, you need your 3 midfielders to be able to cover a lot of ground and Cheyrou is a liability in that regard. Johnson and Bradley have good engines, but they aren't exactly disciplined positionally either.

We have a fighting chance if we pot the first goal. If NYRB gets the first goal, we are screwed. Everyone will be far too aggressive pushing up and NYRB counters for 2nd goal.

Seba and Osorio like to play off each other. Seba will be drift to the left to create space for himself at will.

Once Altidore is healthy:

Giovinco-Altidore-Osorio

Red bulls will more than likely go with 4-2-3-1 which they will basically own the midfield. Service to our forwards is going to be limited and i expect 3 players on Seba's back the entire game. I don't have much confidence in our back line only because it's the beginning and they haven't had much time to bond, although if the D puts on a solid performance, we have a good shot at 3 points.

We have all seen that the results in the first few weeks in this league are pretty random.

Whatever the score, I just want us to look organized, have some pressure and possession, and not be standing around watching Seba.

The results will follow if they do do that.

I would start Babouli at the winger spot instead of Osorio, put Cheyrou on the bench and Osorio back in the midfield where he is much more useful. Cheyrou should be a 60 minute sub at this point or we need a major change in formation, yes he has quality but he is slowing down.

I agree. Osorio as a wide forward is a waste. We need him to shuttle the ball forward.

What the hell has happened to Lovitz btw? The guy looked like he was going to be a great MLS winger (quick, shifty and able to put in a good ball), but all of a sudden when Vanney came in he started getting reps as the third string left back

Just hard to fit him into the kind of 4-man midfield we were playing last year, I think. Our "wide" mids would often drift inside and we rarely drove down the line to cross. Lovitz is very much a wide player.

With our switch to a 4-3-3 and trying to incorporate more wide play this year he should be able to get more minutes.

Agreed. Far and away the best roster we have had, but with Bradley at DM it really does raise questions due to his attacking instincts. If anyone watched Leicester yesterday, Kante was terrific. Watching him was like watching Laba, they even tackle with a similar technique. Boy Laba would fit well here.....

GAME DAY! The new season is upon us, and we're all pretty optimistic about the new season. That's a great feeling! I'm nervous about the first 8 games, but I really do think that we have a pretty solid squad to start the season. It all comes down to Vanney's tactics and use of this solid squad. Hopefully he will have learned enough from last season to know that we NEED to stability and can't just switch up our tactics/formation every 2-3 days and expect to be consistent. Time to shine!

Starting two rookies would be a bad idea to start the season. I'm usually all for playing players in their correct positions but Oso is a little more seasoned and has some proven chemistry with Seba. And given that NY tries to own the mid, I'd rather have Cheyrou's composure and experience in the middle.

Our ability to score is going to depend on getting the ball to Giovinco in the middle. I expect he'll be roaming quite a bit if he's not getting enough touches.

Babouli only striker on the bench, I'm going to go ahead and predict he comes in for Lovitz on 65 minutes.

Stupid work means I can't watch this game in Toronto, but I'll be lucky enough to catch most of it at my girlfriend's places so I suppose that will do.

Weather at Harrison at kick-off is expected to be around 6 degrees Celsius and cloudy with a bit of a breeze. New Jersey has also been experiencing similar temps and atmospheric conditions (5-6 degrees with clouds) for the last few days, so it's not like either team is going to be in for a surprise weather-wise. Looks like conditions in generally are gonna be fair for both clubs - not great, but NYRB definitely has the advantage here. TFC has yet to win at Red Bull Arena. New York is 5-0-1 all-time against the Reds in Harrison. Gonna be an uphill battle for TFC today, most would wager, but both clubs are coming into the game with changed-up rosters and quite a few new faces. TFC did come off an offseason with a lot of mixed results, though we are coming off an 2-1 exhibition lose to Philly while NYRB beat their last opponent 5-1 against the NASL's Jacksonville Armada.

The odds are stacked against us today in New Jersey; but we do have guys like Morrow, Osirio, Bradley, Johnson, and of course Giovinco....

part of reason being fullbacks are not being pushed up high and playing very defensively to stop NYRB counter. if fullbacks push up higher, the wingers would pinch in to provide better support to Giovinco.

Yeah but we don't have a primary striker anywhere on this roster right now. It's totally out of the question.

I don't see him moving around at all. He's stranded in the middle. Our best player has touched the ball maybe 5 times, gotten it under his control twice. We can't expect to score that way.

Vanney should just tell him to abandon leading the line and roam wherever he wants, including dropping deep into our midfielders to pick up the ball. He needs more touches.

Disagree. He's been out wide causing Lawrence to have to think. Apart from one time where Endoh let Lawrenece go for that cross, he's been defensively responsible and pressing well. Technically good on the ball without being enamoured with his technical ability (see Alvaro Rey).

On another note, I remember now why I hated to play against Johnson - guys a pain and running all over.

Red Bulls are going to win this because our midfield is going to let them get the ball in front of our back 4 too many times. But, that high line NYRB is playing is going to cost them eventually.

Defending very well. Midfield hasn't had much of an offensive presence. Gio isolated up top.

NY really hasnt had much tho to be honest.

Yeah, turning the ball over is my main concern with him.

Also endoh has to continue his runs. I've counted 4 or 5 times when he has just pulled up for no reason.
