This should be fun.

Sunset game. A chance to all but cement our playoffs

Easy? Of course not. Union has Conor Casey - so that's a goal probably right there.

And Philly just went to NER and tied them on that pitch, playing a bunch of subs in preparation for their USOC match this week.

But, we are the superior team and should win at our house.

They win the Cup during the week and their hangover continues into Saturday.

We were supposed to be the superior team this past Saturday against Chicago and it was not convincing at all in my opinion and we were fortunate to win thegame. We can't take any team lightly. Hopefully we can beat Philly though for sure.

If the Reds could get decent results from the remaining games, they should be able to finish 2nd or 3rd respectively, needless to say, that it also depends on the outcomes of other teams. Red Bulls more than likely will have 1st place locked.

The CB's need to stay in their position at all costs. Too much floating out wide (Perquis) that is leaking goals at the back.

I think we beat Philly 1-0 last time and we didn't create enough chances and struggled to get into the box. Seba's rocket launch goal was the only difference.

Can we not just play Prekiball from here on out. Just long ball up to Giovinco and Altidore and get a few more results.

The last game was the 2-1 game in July with Giovinco's golf celebration and Connor Casey scoring in the 91st. Still, not a dominating performance.

I'd like to see Jackson at RB for this. Besides that I'm ok with no other changes. It's a bit of a toss up at RM between Findley, Warner and Delgado, but I'd actually be fine with Findley starting. He's slightly turned it around lately... not enough to justify bringing him back mind you, but enough for me to be ok with him starting while he's in acceptable form. It's nice to have a little speed on the wing.

OgtheDim
09-27-2015, 02:27 PM
Right now, I don't care about dominating. Superior teams should win.

Want 3 points - pretty ball can wait. Get that win and then the boys can either take the time off or go away for INT duty until we play 2 in 4 days against NER and C-Bus.

If we want to go anywhere in the playoffs we shouldn't be barely getting by the worst teams in the league. Superior teams win those games easily.

So how about the red bulls losing 5-2 at home to Orlando? or Vancouver losing at home to NYCFC?

A win is a win.

Not sure why you singled out my post when OgtheDim's point that superior teams get the win and mine that those teams don't just squeeze by aren't any less relevant because of those two results.

Not sure why you singled out my post when OgtheDim's point that superior teams get the win and mine that those teams don't just squeeze by aren't any less relevant because of those two results.

because you used the word 'easily'. By law of averages, the team higher up in the standings at this point in the season usually wins. But there are very few easy wins in this league, and starting the narrative that the next game is a failure unless we win 'easily' is pointless. better teams than us will lose to worse teams than philly and it won't be the end of the world. No point in holding us to such a high standard.

OgtheDim
09-27-2015, 03:38 PM
I get what you are saying akoto. My point is that as the superior team, we should be getting the win here. How we do that though means little.

The only narrative that should matter is about getting into the playoffs. Once that's done, its about where we finish. How we get there means nothing right now. (unless you are a team like DCU who are sliding)

The playoff games themselves are part of tournament football and are a very different kettle of fish compared to the season (insert pookie comment here :) )

Where we will go on a game by game basis will depend upon those things we all analyse - defence, tactics, who plays what, who plays how. But, ultimately, its about the result.

This is the part of the learning curve for us supporters as we move from an also ran who usually is flaming out right now and a team in the playoffs. To be expected - we are not used to this.

This is what we wanted. To have meaningful games in October. And that means the emphasis we all place on analysing aspects of TFC's game is going to be reduced.

When you think about it, that's what game threads are - an analysis of why a result did or did not happen. Its just because the season is so long, we tend to look at results as a progression of those things we analyse.

When it comes to results from here on in though, there is only one thing that matters - get the results necessary. And if that means winning ugly against inferior teams, so be it. And when it comes to game expectations, being the superior team means we should expect a win. Is it going to happen? :noidea: This league is unpredictable. But how we win does not matter now as much as winning.

akoto
09-27-2015, 05:06 PM
I too get your point OgtheDim, but saying it doesn't matter how we win but it does for DCU kind of discredits it. If a win is a win for us, a win is a win for every other team in the league. Anyways, my original point wasn't to derail this thread and create something negative, I was simply replying to ronzilla who had posted that our last meeting was a 1-0 win and it was actually the 2-1 win at BMO where we won despite having almost every stat against us.

Anyways, lets take this back to the topic at hand, the game on Saturday.

Yeah, despite their position in the standings, Philly could end up being a pretty tough opponent next Saturday. Mentioned how they played New England to a draw away, but they've posted a few other great results over the last few games. Out of their last matches, they have a record of 2-1-1 and have racked up 6 goals, so they're definitely trending well in the trailing end of the season. Like Chicago before them, though, they do have a mid-week match they're playing away on Wednesday, so they could be coming into Toronto with some fatigue.

I watched the PHI vs NER game and it was only close in score. NER killed them but the PHI goalie played out of his mind. Made 2 or 3 out of this world saves. Otherwise NER wins by two goals. NER carved up PHI defense but could not beat the goalie.

I kind of have a good feeling about this game. Regardless of the outcome, Philly should be mentally and emotionally drained from the USOC final. I think they'll probably come out flat and TFC will capitalize on that.

He responded to Molinaro tweeting a link to his latest article (http://t.co/y8Nhn7caEu) by saying Molinaro should come into the dressing room and talk with the team.

I don't know if he was being serious or joking, but I myself thought it was odd of Molinaro to come out with a mostly negative article on the back of two straight TFC wins. I don't even disagree with the content really, just the timing of it made me feel like it was creeping into "cheap shot" territory.

No. But a yellow card accumulation during the regular season only is applied to regular season games. Presumably a suspension earned on the last regular season game day would be served the first game day of the following season:

this is a must win and they have to do well going into red bulls and columbus, in all honesty i feel the team got together too late into the season for them to mold together as well as they should, in all hoensty, they look too lost out there as in they dont have a solid coach above em, its sad to say because i like coach vanney but hes not the greatest at molding a team or providing with pregame motivation, hes more good at strategy and reiterating games, i hope they can come together... i hope they can like elevate themselves to giovincos level.. looks like hes doing all the trickery out there everyone else standing around , you need jump to you if your going to bang a ball in

DC vs NYC play Friday - we want a DC win or tie
MTL vs Orlando play right after us Saturday - we want a MTL win or tie.
Those 2 results combined with a TFC win will give us p******s.

DC just won 2-1 over NYCFC. So that means we win, and MTL draw or win following our game tomorrow, and we clinch the play-off spot? Sounds good to me.

Ivey :

1) the team out on the pitch for alot of the season dont look completely cohesive and thats coaching
2) Ive seen some pregame lockerroom stuff and I cant knock any coach for being how they are but to me it seemed he was a little weak to be fair
3)post-game interviews are usually light and I find he reiterates alot of things and about positions and such but i havent seen anything that would i duno motivate i guess
I think the guy is a great guy , and also a great coach, he knows his junk , but he lacks in my opinion that touch that provides for a cohesive team i have seen much football in my time lately and i m accurate i believe , i am not saying to get rid of him however i dont think hes maximized the personelle we have well see, i mean its already late in the season and I feel we havent seen the season that I wanted to see thats just my opinion is the team good yeah but i thought we could do better

GAME DAY :scarf:

Weather

COLD 12 with a wind chill to 8

WINDY 45km/h gusts out of the east

A 40% CHANCE OF WET

Construction - the usual Gardiner stuff

Congestion - the Ex is going to be BUSY with a lot of other stuff, there's Nuit Blanche tonight :jester::hat::party: , and another Taylor Swift concert this evening.

So, expect to pay LOT for parking (talk of $50 charges last night near the Dome), show up early, and wander back towards the downtown core afterwards for some frivolity.

Its been over 25 years since there have been meaningful sports in this city outside at this time of year.

Eventually word will get out about what the atmosphere can be like in the Fall - until then, this remains a summer time or indoor sports town.

Actually, we really are getting a LOT tonight.

NYRB beating Columbus and Chicago beating NER and Orlando beating Montrael means

We are 4 up on Montreal with them only having only 1 game in hand.

We are within 1 of 2nd through 4th with a game in hand.

I have to disagree. He's the US captain and their leader during their meaningful games (hence Mexico and that's okay). He's our captain and our leader during our meaningful games. Choosing a friendly over our meaningful games isn't leading us when we need it. If we clinched then maybe I could understand, but a captain needs to lead us when it matters.

Within MLS, yes, but other leagues do it differently - either via scheduling at the outset or, like Serie A, re-scheduling matches. The league really has to address this because it looks bush league if you don't have top talent for key games.

It's a dead horse right now, of course, and I'm confident we will see our captain and Altidore in the NYRB match.

The real issue is that MLS doesn't conform to FIFA dates. It's rather annoying to hear MLS commentators say how if you want to be a big team, you have to learn to adjust for international call ups. No! It should be, if you (MLS) want to be a big league, then YOU have to learn to adjust for international call ups. And by adjust I mean adjust your schedule.

Missing players for games in big leagues is rare. The only thing I can think of is players during the African Nation's Cup. But that's missing a player once every two years. For us it's more like once every 2 months.

Finally, is it really that hard to have us do a winter season like Europe? We're already pushing our schedule well into December for the MLS Cup- the biggest match of the year. The only problem I potentially see (and it's a big one) is competing tv ratings during p******s as it would line up with NBA and NHL.

Well with the talk of MLS having more mid week games next season and ending earlier, hopefully we will see less of this sort of stuff

However, there is no way they can take off all the weeks of the World Cup and the Gold Cup (2022 is going to be really interesting with the MLS Cup Final likely having to be before the end of October - somewhere there is a 20 year old kid we are going to be right royally pissed about not being around for us as our DP in 7 years).

Seems counter-intuitive to pay guys millions of dollars and be in the beggar ' s position when it comes to getting them to forego a friendly to play one of the most important games in your club's history. Histrionics aside, I can't imagine we won't see Bradley and Altidore against NYRB - I know that game is too important to them.

Agreed. As our Captain if you're foregoing one of the most important games in our history to play a friendly then that is telling. And it's not like Bradley has zero say in the matter - if his heart is set on the Toronto game then people would know.

He does have zero say in the matter. You think he's gonna stay captain under Klinsman if he starts declining call-ups on Fifa dates? He's balancing his duties as captain of his country and captain of this team as best he can.

Well, FWIW, here is a tweet from Kurt Larson of moments ago:

Word from USSF is that there will be "no decision" on roster changes until after 10/10. Leaves open possibility Jozy/Michael return. #TFC (https://twitter.com/hashtag/TFC?src=hash)

I don't believe Bradley or Altidore are playing for the US on Oct 13. But no one will say it out loud, as the USMNT have ridiculously expensive tickets to sell for the Costa Rica game.

I believe that the horse trade is that TFC didn't object to them missing a couple of games pre-Gold Cup for friendlies, in return for allowing them back Oct 14. Remember Bradley's run against the Netherlands? He missed a TFC game to play in that game.

Having the gold cup every two years is rediculous. They need to cut that shit out.

If MLS let's national team call ups affect the outcome of it's competition - Supporters Shield - then it's time for the fans to speak up. Maybe time for all league supporters to boycott games that clash. They aren't listening to and they make MLS look bush league with this. It's a tainted competition - especially in a salary cap league with no depth on almost any squad. It needs to get fixed.

^The league needs its stars and to play games. I don't agree with it but if there are still stadia with hash marks this time of the season the shouts of "bush league" will be falling on deaf ears.

He is good technically and Bradley and Altidore have confidence in him. Go back and look at Bradley's interview - unless my memory is very wrong, he pretty clearly thinks it's Findley on the one side and Oso or Delgado on the other.

also, agree re Jackson. Good move by Vanney.

Oso with a much deserved MLS team of the week award. I like this kid, great attitude, you can tell he loves playing for us and lately he has really started to shine has his confidence has grown. I think playing with the likes of Bradley, Cheyrou, Seba and Jozy has really helped his game. Great to see a Canadian kid show the skills that he did on Sat and he works his socks off too.

Osorio's now tied 3rd in the league for passing success percentage, and he and Nagbe are the only advanced midfielders in the top 20 (rest is made up almost exclusively of defensive mids).

As was already said:

Osorio is a sponge ... Guy never wastes a ball
