I though this was a great help in trying to understand a pretty convoluted rule.

They should really take the homegrown rule further and actually make it meaningfull.

For example, every homegrown player trained by the club for more than 2-3 years should not count against the cap/budjet(team can pay wage) ever as long as they are with the club. If MLS wants to create and keep the rising stars they really got to start creating more incentives overall.

Promoting local talent is the best long term strategy for growth, foriengers can only take you so far within a limited budjet.

Maybe i'm taking this a little off topic but I really wish TFC would expand it's academy. Their is still a ton of area outside the HGP area that could support a residency type setup, Vancouver is putting one in london. As we can see from many of our youth national teams are dominated by MLS academy kids, the more kids these academies can influence the better IMO.

I hope nobody takes that as a shot at local teams because it's not but having grown up in an academy setting (different sport) it's often tough for local clubs to have close to the same amount of resources as a professional club.

From a national perspective the more kids we can have in high performance environments the better.

Interesting article. Thanks for posting the link. I had forgotten just how big of a territory the Whitecaps have claimed. I think they even have a partnership with a club as close as London or Guelph.

Toronto FC (http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/mls/teams/toronto-fc)
All of Canada except British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec

Vancouver Whitecaps (http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/mls/teams/vancouver-whitecaps)
All of Canada except Quebec and a 50 mile radius from 35 Carl Hall Road, North York, ON

^ Just look at the disparity between those two clubs!
