Toronto's probably got fucked on this deal.

Chicago Tribune

During halftime of Thursday's MLS All-Star game, MLS commissioner Don Garber said that there would be an announcement regarding Brian McBride on Friday.

"It got resolved today," Garber responded when asked about trade talks involving the Fire and Toronto FC. "We'll announce something tomorrow. Brian McBride will be in our league.

"It's taken us awhile to come up with a resolutions that's fair. But that resolution is complete."
According to a source close to the Fire, the framework of the trade is complete but the deal has yet to be finalized.

As I mentioned in another thread if that insider on BS was correct:

Mo asks for Mapp 1 for 1
Chi - Offers Rolfe or Barrett 1 for 1
Mo - Rolfe or Barett +Draft picks/allocations

Surely we won't get less.

Nyarko is a crap shoot. We need to take away one of their front line players and get him in our lineup (esp if it is a forward)

Can't wait to hear the news tomorrow

Ives reported earlier today that Rolfe is in town. He claims it's unrelated toa deal but know I wonder....

There weren't that many actual MLS all-stars at the party too long (they have a game today after all), but there were plenty of MLS players in attendance (including All-Star snub Gonzalo Segares, Chicago teammate Chris Rolfe and New England midfielder Jeff Larentowicz. And no Rolfe, wasn't in town to complete a trade to Toronto to settle the Brian McBride allocation mess). There were plenty of MLS power brokers in attendence as well, including D.C. United's Will Chang, Seattle's Adrian Hanauer and Chicago Fire owner Andrew Hauptman.

He is now claiming the deal involves Chad Barrett.....fuck:

I spoke to Mo before the ASG in the Rogers Club and he told me the McBride deal was done, We have a striker coming (wouldn't say a name) and another coming next week (international). Striker coming our way as part of McBride deal.

Yes, Chad Barrett has a pretty poor reputation, and he may not exactly be a clinical finisher, but he's better than anything we have now. I'm not ecstatic, but I'm not pissed off, I always knew we would have to settle for less. Our hands have been forced here, there's no doubt, and this is the exact type of deal I was expecting.

Did we get fair value? No, but we did get a striker, plus some money, and this issue is finally over and done with. I'm just happy to move on.

have you watched him play? I watched a lot of Chicago games when this whole ordeal started. Barrett sucks ass. He constantly misses open shots.

Here is a comparison between Cunningham and Barrett:

Barrett:
5 goals in 1174 minutes
minutes per goal:234.8
Shots: 35
Shots on goal: 14
G/SOG: .36

Cunningham:
3 goals in 635 minutes
Minutes per goal: 211.66
Shots: 17
Shots on goal: 7
G/SOG: .43

And Barrett has Blanco serving the ball.

Are you all SURE you would prefer Barrett over Cunningham???? I don't want either of them.

Although, with Cunny we expected so much, one of the leagues all-time leading goal scorers etc. But with Barrett, we have such low expectations now, anything he does will be a positive. If he sucks, it was expected anyway.

Gotta be Dickov. He was supposed to make his decision today, according to the English papers. It would take until next week to get his clearance.

Yup, if it is him, we also need to get behind him. No "Cunny Pt. 2" banners or anything clever like that. Make the guy feel like the important part of the club that he needs to be going forward this season.

I fear for the guy though because all of the frustration from Cunny will probably instantly be directed towards him. I think collectively we will need to understand that he might miss a couple and not get on his case too early. Let's see what he can do.

Probably the best take on the situation I’ve read so far. Barret is Chicago’s leading scorer. Maybe he scores a few for us and we stop stalemating with everyone.

I agree but we are looking for results... if we don't start getting them quickly then there will be a lot of frustration launched his way between now and the end of the year. No one is willing to pack it in yet and they shouldn't be.

If it is Barrett coming, I want some other news of the second striker while we evaluate what Barrett does in the TFC shirt.

James17930
07-25-2008, 01:36 AM
^ yes -- and once Danny is healthy, they might work pretty well together. if they each scored 10 - 12 goals a season, augmented with more goals from our midfield, then we'd have definitely gotten a good thing from this deal.

Plus a first round draft pick, which is always huge.

noochie
07-25-2008, 01:38 AM
Yeah the picks are massive... and they can also be used to trade up if packaged with a player later on. Drafting IMO is still one of the most important ways to build an MLS franchise considering the salary cap and player restrictions. Getting a GA player late in a round though is a hard thing to do so the Chicago pick may end up not working out if they finish strong.

Barrett is a much better striker than Cunningham is... That alone is good enough for me. ;) Anything more is just a bonus. Who heard Carver rip into Cunningham after the Montreal match? Barrett's move to TFC means he is now tied for the lead in team scoring and we're already shitting on the guy?

Some of you are impossible!

Yesterday we were going to RSL with one healthy striker a 16 year old kid. Today we're going with an MLS starter…and it cost us zilch.

As of right now the only problem I have with this guy is his name…Chad? Chad? …FFS! Who names there kid Chad?

Not impossible, just a realist. The stats don't lie and I have watched him play. There is a reason why we got a Barrett + allocation + a first round draft pick.

Yesterday we were going to RSL with a 16 y/o and an MLS starter who can't hit the net. Now we have 2 of them.

I hope he can get better, but to expect otherwise is setting yourself up for disappointment. I am hoping beyond hope that the change of scenery will do him a world of good.

The only way I will find this a good deal is if

1) We can unload Cunningham without paying for part of his salary so we have a bit more money to play with, anything else we get in the deal will be gravy :) His removal from the club will be an addition by subtraction
2) We get another striker so he has someone to play with (Carver said 1 next week)
3) All of this allocation money goes to good use
4) with the roster limits we face, all of these draft picks are going to have to be packaged up somehow in a trade as there won't be enough room on the squad.
5) Barrett stops shooting at the keeper or missing the net.

That's a lot of hopefuls to make this deal work.
