Yeah when the trade happened this was part of the agreement. I wonder what the pricing is going to be like. I just hope we won't play Roma this season too due to Bradley's deal

Good grief ... and in the middle of the Pan-Am games as well. It's the same time as the women's semi-finals in Hamilton - I'd sooner be there (but with tickets to the men's semi-finals on Thursday - probably won't be).

Would be nice to boo Defoe though ... but I an't see paying any $ for this.

Expect to see a groupon for this.
Will probably look something like:

4 tickets to the Match
4 bags of popcorn
4 hotdogs
4 drinks
4 TFC scarves
4 rain ponchos
4 programs
4 Go/TTC tickets/parking vouchers
4 tickets to an upcoming Marlies game
4 tickets to a future Argos game
A meet and greet with 2 bench players before the game

All for just $19.99

This is friendly 2 of the year. This is not without precedent. We've had 2 in a year before.

This friendly probably is probably how we got Altidore and got rid of Defoe. So...

I won't be going and a couple fans will.

One of the biggest issues in MLSE selling the Manchester City match was that there isn't a huge MCFC support in our city. But it would dwarf Sunderland's by a mile. The MLSE sales staff has a real dog with fleas here, know idea how they will sell it.

Good luck selling tickets to this one. Free tickets might put some people in the seats, but even that will probably be dismal attendance. Just wow...

mowe
06-05-2015, 11:16 AM
Since this was part of the Jozy/Defoe deal, this is free money for MLSE. Even if they give away tickets, they just need to sell enough concessions to cover operating costs and they're in the black.

That being said, I can't wait to see how they price this.

It's during the Pan-Am games.
Could be a sell for foreigners to the city to watch the local club play.

No. It's payment in kind, which was negotiated for. That is not "free".

But yeah, they will have trouble selling more then 10K seats at anything close to list prices. Pan Am games will keep crowd down, if anything - I am not going near downtown if I can help it while that thing is on.

It might a good opportunity to give away the whole upper deck to soccer leagues.

`No,' said a great fat man with a monstrous chin,' I don't know much about it, either way. I only know there's a friendly.'
`When did they announce it.' inquired another.
`This morning, I believe.'
`Why, what was the matter with a week free.' asked a third, taking a vast quantity of snuff out of a very large snuff-box. `I thought they'd never show up.'
`God knows,' said the first, with a yawn.
`What have they done with the transfer fee.' asked a red-faced gentleman with a pendulous excrescence on the end of his nose, that shook like the gills of a turkey-cock.
`I haven't heard,' said the man with the large chin, yawning again. `Left it to the next manager, perhaps. They havn't spent it. That's all I know.'
This pleasantry was received with a general laugh.
`It's likely to be a very cheap friendly,' said the same speaker;' for upon my life I don't know of anybody to go to it. Suppose we make up a party and volunteer.'
`I don't mind going if a lunch is provided,' observed the gentleman with the excrescence on his nose. `But I must be fed, if I make one.'
Another laugh.

Friendly. Don't care.

Will say that I find the marketing in poor taste.

Like a few years ago in the NHL (pre: Bertuzzi-Moore) when they would sell games based on the potential for violence. Don't see it getting there but drawing on the negativity to sell tickets to a meaningless game sounds like fake Wrestling.

Am going. The timing isn't that bad, unlike Man City, and it has the potential to be fun. Plus Sunderland players will be competing for their jobs in pre season. And it gives us a chance to thank Defoe for the goals he scored for us, pre injury.

Fake wrestling isn't what it used to be. Hogan, The British Bulldogs, Macho Man, Paul Mr Wonderful Orndorf, Andre the Giant, Rowdy Roddy Piper. Fun until I was old enough to figure out it was fake. Actually, I remember getting tickets to Wrestlemania in Newmarket. I thought I was going to the real thing. Got into the auditorium and learned what Simulcast was all about. The world shrunk a little that day.

Weird thing I remember was people bringing signs to the simulcast.

He'll get booed if he plays. We'll show him. Take that boo. Yeah, that's worth the price of admission.... instead, I think I'll go golfing.

I cant believe we're playing a friendly because of the Defoe deal. Did Sunderland really make us agree to this condition or what, we gave them a premier league proven striker and took their problem striker off their books, that should have been enough.

$21 is about $21 more than I'd pay to see something like this. I probably wouldn't go if it was free.

Now if this were the DeRo testimonial match instead of a pointless TFC fixture and they would give a decent % of the gate sales to his foundation then I probably would have paid even $30. For this I say nay.

Based on my seats in 111 were $60 each for the MFC game, $25 in 111 is a more reasonable price to pay...I agree I won't be going to the game (not here anyways) but value wise it's not a bad price.

I agree with the DeRo match, if there are things we can do to add value to the foundation it will be a great event (MLSE should give all proceeds from concession sales go to the foundation).

$21 is pretty reasonable. I'm not going, but the prices are not ridiculous.Still double what many season ticket holders are paying per game. To see worst remaining Premier League team.

It's the same time as the Gold Cup semi-final. Hopefully that's a match worth watching.

I can't see this selling more than 10K then TFC FO will have to do some promotions and whatnot to get more people there to not look so bad. I wonder if they would consider blacking this game out on TV to increase gate sales. If they gave me free tickets maybe I would probably go but why would they do that....so safe to assume I am not going. :)

Excuses, Excuses, Excues ... not a shot at you, but someone either wants to go or not, simple as that. The same things could very well be taking place in and around a Wednesday night when the Reds are playing a team like Montreal. Cost is not a factor here at its just $20. So as I have said it comes down to one simpe question, to go or not to go, that all.

I clearly don't see value in going to exhibition games. Just my opinion.

I do however see value in "Steak and Beans" night at the golf club.

Problem is that you're paying more than $20 when you add other expenses (like transit or parking fees, food, drinks etc...) while dealing with stress of getting there during PAN AM games (where exhibition place is going to be packed with PAN AM events).

I personally not going unless it's last minute and I am around the area. :)

Why not? They can be an opposition to play against. The game would be about DeRo, not who they happen to play against..

Auzzy

DeRo would rightfully want control over who plays. He's been around the league & the city long enough to easily fill both teams. Plus I'm sure he would not want to be associated with any Defoe song & dance.

Plus testimonial matches tend to be pretty low-key, with lots of jokes & varying skill/fitness levels. Not useful as a pre-season tune-up match for Sunderland.

I still wouldn't attend (Season Ticket Holder since Day 1)

What a waste of time. Playing a match against Sunderland and Jermain Defoe.

Can't understand why they would do that, other than to give the supporters an oppourtunity to chant and sing insulting songs

This will be a good game for TFC2 players and potentially someone coming back from injury (Caldwell, Bloom).

I'd rather not see any of our first teams guys out there. Especially with us already being 4 guys down due to the Gold Cup.
Imagine 1 or two of our guys get injured in this match? we are now 5-6 starters out. That would be very bad football business IMO.

Don't believe so.

Part of me wants a good crowd so Defoe can hear how much we slant him for his poor contract ethics. The other part wants us to show MLSE that fans don't give a shit about these mid-season friendlies that only cost us the risk of injury and fatigue.

MLSE must see TFC compared to the Raptors/Leafs and think there's a lack of games played (ticket sales) so they've gotta up it to gain more revenue. In reality they need to continue making a quality squad so they can hit nearly 40,000 tickets sold each game.

Sunderland: Pantilimon, Jones (Matthews, 46), van Aanholt, O'Shea (c) (Beadling, 46), Brown, Larsson, Cattermole, Rodwell (Bridcutt, 46), Johnson (Giaccherini, 46), Defoe, Fletcher (Watmore, 85).

Toronto: Bendik (Bono, 32); Morrow (Morgan, 46)(Hamilton, 75), Perquis (Osorio, 32), Zavaleta (Thomas, 32), Jackson (Aparacio, 46); Lovitz (Chapman, 32), Cheyrou (Bouchard, 32), Warner (Creavalle, 32), Delgado (Dike, 32); Giovinco (Mannella, 32), Findley (Babouli, 57).

Sunderland is done with their pre-season tour of N.A., they have a couple friendlies left back home before their first game of the season in a couple weeks so I assume this is close to their starting team.

NYRB B team just beat, and scored 4 goals on, Chelsea's A team. Pretty remarkable.

Saddest thing I've ever seen? Fans on the sunderland "ready to go" chat board in their match thread are actually excited to have beaten our youth team. They didn't believe the announcer that it was our 'b' team and even the ones who did thought that meant our bench and reserves.

They're quite excited about how they played against a team of teens, semi-pros and 3rd division players! After reading that, I declare them the saddest professional team in existence, and would like to remind anyone still pained by the past sordid eight seasons that we are, in fact, not Sunderland.

I don't get it, why that?

Cause CONCACAF has to pay some massive legal bills. Its pretty obviously being set up to be Mexico in that game.

Maybe we gotta drop out of Concacaf. Lets apply to Conmebol on some sort of humanitarian/refugee grounds.

Fixing this has to start somewhere, with someone...

I liked the way the TFC youngsters were passing it around.

Sunderland didn't sub much. Were those mostly starters, 2nd string, or a mix?

We were missing our three new signings, Kaboul, Lens, and Coates. Apart from that, close to the first team.

Most of that is pretty much tongue in cheek after an awful pre-season for us so far. I think it was just hilarious how biased the commentator was and how he seemed to have a massive hatred for Defoe, particularly when he scored two goals.

Ugh no thanks. This PAN AM state of mind seems to be growing.

I blame Hunger Games.

Let's just flip this on its head for once and point this firmly in the direction of those that love to compare MLS sides to UK sides. I'm gonna go ahead and let them give us that respect and not shit on their sides quality. Just cause its the

friendly

thing to do

Sunderland is a joke. Our A squad would have beaten them handily.

Hard not to be impressed with Mannella tonight. I don't think he'll ever set the world on fire but he looks like he could be a solid and dependable pro. It would be great if he could take over as a starter from Cheyrou in a couple if years.

I have been saying these same words for a while now. I personally think he is good enough to start alongside warner or cheyrou, you just need the trust from the manager to start him.

Hamilton.. All the promise he once showed seems to have disappeared completely. The kid needs to score some goals and get some confidence back. I feel like his move to Portugal may have actually set him back.

No way!

I was at the game (Got 6 free tickets!!), and the crowd was sparse. I'd say around 7-8K.

There were a lot of free tickets floating around.

I was at the game. The lower bowl was about 85% full. Lower bowl holds about 16k, so 14k is about right.

I feel like I was the only one at the time who called that. Telling a teenager to go across the world and fight for a spot at a second division team with terrible facilities, shit coaching staff, no support system and a massive language barrier (few languages are harder to pick up on than Portuguese) was always going to be a fruitless operation. Would have been a lot better for him to stay the year in Wilmington.

Just because it's Europe doesn't mean it's better.

112-113 were virtually empty, from 114 on it was pretty full.

He is only 19 remember. I think as long as he gets a good run of games at TFC II he will be fine. He notted 5 in 11 last year. SO far this year 2 in 7. I haven't watched him play so can't comment on whether he is developing or not. Is he missing chances or not taking them because the team is poor? ect. I think patience is key with a young player like this. He got a taste of what the majority Europe (not first division) is like. Let the season play out and I say give him other one with TFC II before really worrying.
