For those seeking to ignore the game in Montreal on one Wednesday, we present for you the game in Montreal next Wednesday.

A week tonight people.

Not sure if this will be on Sportsnet somewhere or not. Heck, it may not be streamed.

********

Hopefully we see all the B team with maybe Caldwell or Bloom coming back from injury. I want to win this but we gotta preserve energy for the first home game.

It will be on Sportsnet, it is important for the Reds to take this seriously and pursue the win. To have success and have a chance at what the Impact have been experiencing the last few weeks and especially tonight. I am looking forward to next Wednesday as I will be at Saputo for it.

Regardless of what happens tonight, the fact that Montreal made it so far should fire up our boys. I see no reason why we shouldn't go the distance.

I really don't like doing this because nobody really knows for certain what would have unfolded. But just imagine what our side could have accomplished if they had beaten Montreal in the CCL finals last year. Might Toronto FC be hosting the final leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final at BMO Field with a chance of winning it all?

After Montreal's run in the CCL, it might be difficult for their guys to get fired up for this one.

Lets do them a favour and knock 2 games off their season. :D

I'm going to the game, I won't be arriving until Wednesday afternoon so I won't be going to McLeans.

I have a room in the Plateau area so I'll be going to a place nearby before the game(it's a short downhill stumble to the Metro)...

I really do not get this , as the Reds have played academy players in the Canadian Champion/Champions League on two occasions in the past. Ashtone who played his 100th game for the Reds yesterday made his TFC debut as one of them.

I hope they start all bench players. The league needs to be our focus. We have won the Canadian Championship many times but have never made the playoffs in MLS. Have to focus on achieving that goal above all else. Bench players can be really hungry anyways so it's not even necessarily a bad thing to play a lot of them.

Academy players would be considered as being part of the same team I guess. Players on a USL contract are really on a different team entirely, so it makes sense.

Since it doesn't appear that we are going to play many 1st team players (which is very frustrating to me), I hope we send out as canadian of a lineup as possible:

Roberts
Delgado - Zavaleta - Hagglund - Morgan
Manella - Chapman
Findley - Osorio - Lovitz
Hamilton

Over 61,000 people bought tickets for the CCL match at Olympic Stadium. It was one of the largest crowds seen at the stadium and the largest crowd any MLS club in Canada has attracted for a single game. And all this happened on a brisk Wednesday night in Montreal during the middle of the NHL postseason. Add ticket sales to CONCACAF prize money for making it as far as the final, and Saputo has made MAD CASH off this tournament, even if it's been at the expense of their MLS regular season record.

The bottom line is the bottom line. I just don't see either Saputo or MLSE turning their noses up at the possibility to try for the Champions League this time around. And seeing as how the Canadian Championship is the only way to make it into that tournament, I fully expect that TFC will field a competitive roster. The prospect of filling up Rogers Centre in mid-April (perhaps after yet another Leafs season without playoffs) is too great of an opportunity in the eyes of MLSE to ignore.

I don't think so - they replaced their suspended keeper with a lower quality one from a lower level league. If that is setting precedent, i'm fine with it. I think most CCL teams would rather use their own keepers than an outsider, just for continuity's sake.

You have to use the subs in the normal context of a soccer game, so sit those you want to rest and mix in the rest of your vets with the kids and that will be your X11. It has be done with an eye that most of the starters will go the full 90.

The full travel roster for tomorrow night:

Chris Konopka, Quillan Roberts, Damien Perquis, Nick Hagglund, Ashtone Morgan, Justin Morrow, Eriq Zavaleta, Marky Delgado, Warren Creavalle, Chris Mannella, Jonathan Osorio, Jay Chapman, Daniel Lovitz, Michael Bradley, Collen Warner, Benoit Cheyrou, Luke Moore and Jordan Hamilton.

When I first saw who was not going to Montreal, my heart sank as I'm going to the match and no Seba.
Then, when I saw who is going, I felt much better.

We have much better depth than in previous years.

Given that roster, you'd be inclined to believe Hamilton will be going the 90 mins tomorrow. Which is excellent.

Don't understand why Gio and Altidore can't play 2 games in a week. They can rest vs. Man City, or in the return leg if we go back with a lead.
Since the second leg is only 3 days after the home opener hopefully they're resting now so they can play at home next week.

Hmm....not much forward depth.

Thought the same. To me, this means Hamilton isn't starting. My guess is something like this:

-------------Moore
-------------Osorio
Lovitz---Warner--Bradley----Dalgado
Morgan-Hagglund-Zavaleta-Creavalle
---------------Roberts

(or as a 4-2-3-1 with Lovtiz & Dalago playing higher up)

The captain stays in and the rest of the 1st team players stay on the bench in case of emergency. Eventually bring Hamilton on for Moore and Chapman in for Warner/Osorio.

I'm surprised how little you guys care about CCL qualification ..

I suspect Gio didn't travel as they want a healthy, rested Gio to "wow" the crowd at the home opener. That, and an injury to him in Montreal would be a less than ideal situation for the opener for them. Lets face it, a lot of people are showing up on Sunday to see him play.

with so few MLS matches, MTL seemingly needs to field this team to get them action before resuming what will be more rapid MLS play.

Well TFC has had a couple of lazy bastards over the years, but Moore is definitely in the upper echelon. Couple of minutes ago when Osorio tried to slip it through for him, yeah pass was no good & their keeper got it, but Moore didn't move a muscle. Why is it that no player ever does anything creative around the opposition box? North American players are trained to get it wide and cross it, or always show up and give support as a DM like Bradley always done.

No creative runs, no good thru balls, no one ever looks for the 1-2, no one tries to beat their man one or one for the quick shot. It's just a total lack of creativity.

Vanney going Nelsen-style here, subs always way too late. He has the subs up & getting ready, but forgets to put them in. First 2 subs came after the Montreal goal. Sub in Hamilton already, what is he expecting from Moore now?

Moore and Delgado were clearly gassed. Yet we still held on to a sub. C'mon Vanney.

Disappointing game. I was not impressed with Zavaleta, Creavalle did nothing to reclaim his spot, and Osorio didn't have an impact on the game yet again.

Hopefully we play Giovinco/Altidore in the return leg.

It's a shame our B team can't beat the basement dwellers of the league. If the Canadian teams (the MLS ones anyway) can't be bothered to put any effort into trying to win the Canadian Championship it doesn't look good for soccer in Canada. Even the guys running the website for the Championship can't be bothered to keep the team rosters up to date.

None of the bench players showed anything, other than Chapman maybe. Considering the lineup will accept 1-0.

Meh, league matches more important. For me, getting a player like Giovinco hurt by some Impact scrub is about the same as us using him and him getting hurt against Man. City.

Holy fuck. The A-team just came off a seven game road trip. If Vanney played all the starters, he would be accused of running them into the ground. And if we then lost on Sunday, people would be calling for his head for prioritizing the Canadian Championship over the home opener.

That was mind numbing.

Of the B team, only Delgado showed anything and he was marked out of the match.

Lovitz did nothing of note. A bit of energy but going nowhere.

Osorio was awful - bad passes, bad positioning, bad decisions.

Zaveletta was out of position a lot.

Creavalle was passing the ball to nobody (although he did do his usual 3 decent tackles from behind per game).

Moore wasn't finding spaces and wasn't dangerous.

Konopka doesn't command the area.

Montreal may very well end up at the bottom of the standings this year, but it's probably a bit harsh to call them that when they've played all of four games this season with CCL games in between.

We have like 25 games left in the league. Only 4 in the cup. All this team has to do is finish 6th for this season to be called a success by the majority of the public. I don't see why we can't go all out in all competitions.

Lol. I wouldn't. There are soooooo many games left in the league .. and after 7 games we're in a great position. I'd take a small dip in form if it meant we'd get back to the CCL.

We fielded a B team that had no chemistry whatsoever and we lost only 1-0 on the road against their A team. We could still advance if Vanney fields a stronger starting lineup in the second leg.

I have no issues with the lineup he selected tonight considering the recent road trip, and I think the results in this tournament are secondary to the league results this season.

The last time I took these games with any sort of interest was the year they went to the distance with Winter at the helm. After that - I didn't really pay any attention to it.

- Lovitz needs to add something to his game. Either he learns to defend and he transitions to fullback or he learns out to make runs into the final third. He looks out of place in most systems outside of a flat 4-4-2. Either way, he was dire last night.
- Delgado was supposed to be that possession sink and drift inside to combine with Oso but he ended up drifting wider throughout the game and that left Oso isolated in the middle.
- Fullbacks added no width throughout the match, that's most likely due to play breaking down in the final third.

Losing the Voyageurs Cup won’t get Greg Vanney fired. Losing out on the 2015 MLS playoffs will probably be a career death sentence for Vanney and maybe even for his boss Tim Bezbatchenko.

I don’t think there is anything controversial, nor is there anything wrong, with the above statement.

The problem I and many others have is that this past Wednesday evening Toronto FC showed us all that they somehow think that doing what is needed to give themselves a fair chance to win a trophy that many of their most devoted supporters cherish has next to no importance at all. And most importantly the TFC brain trust somehow think that what might end up being two extra games to play (TWO!! not TEN) if they made it to the Voyageurs Cup Finals would be a horrible burden that might cost them a 2015 playoff place… and their jobs.

Myopia thy name is Toronto FC.

Did the Canadian Soccer Association somehow miss letting TFC know that the format for this year’s Voyageurs Cup competition had changed? Do they not know that the winner of the Voyaguers Cup 2015 only has to squeeze those additional four group stage matches into their schedule next season and not this year? All we are talking about here is potentially two additional matches (assuming TFC would make it to the finals) to be played this season with the chance to reclaim a trophy this club once held four years running.

I am still fuming about Wednesday for two and a half reasons. Those reasons are Giovinco, Altidore, and Cheyrou. Seba and Jozy never made the trip to Montreal (Cheyrou did, and was subbed on late). Vanney decided in his infinite wisdom to leave them back in Toronto. Frank Klopas facing the same sort of decision with his precious offensively minded DP Ignancio Piatti, decided to dress him and to keep him on the bench (Like Cheyrou, he did feature on the second half). But at least Klopas had Piatti – his most gifted offensive player – as an option. Vanney did not.

Whether things Wednesday evening might have been different or not is of course impossible to say but if Toronto found themselves a goal down in the second half and could throw on a Giovinco and/or an Altidore for a short run out things could have been significantly better for TFC then they are now . Guaranteed we will see the Reds facing an ‘autobus’ parking Impact side who will be chippy and bunker next week trying to squeeze out a win.

I fully understand, and to a great extent agree, that Giovinco and Altidore should not have started the match in Montreal. I completely disagree with the folly of not at least having one or both of them as options coming off the bench if needed. Bringing on the likes of Giovinco instead of (due respect to him) a kid like Jay Chapman late or an Altidore for a fairly ineffectual Luke Moore might have been enough to turn the tide. Not a single starter for Toronto FC Wednesday evening has scored for the club so far in 2015. Only Cheyrou had scored (once) from the list of players who featured.

Most importantly having Giovinco/Altidore as options would have shown their opponents, the League, and their supporters that this team is confident enough in its makeup today that two extra games on the offing would not be enough of burden to scupper the playoffs. It would also have shown all of us that they have enough sense to know that a team needs to LEARN how to win and that going all out for a trophy that has meaning is worthy of their best efforts. And it would have shown their most ardent supporters who are STILL HERE that they understand what is most important to fans – Winning trophies and winning honours.

But as we all know by now that’s not what happened. Seba stayed home. Jozy did too. And Toronto FC lost a lackluster match that they very well could have drawn or outright won. The issue is still in doubt next week and we will speak of it more in this space as the return leg gets closer. All is not lost.

So my thesis after all these words about the Cup tie Wednesday evening is this: TFC (particularly its leadership – Vanney & Bezbatchenko) doesn’t really care about anything other than the playoffs this year. They think that anything that can get in the way of their MLS campaign hurts them and should not be entertained.

However if this is TRULY the case then why schedule a friendly versus Manchester City smack dab in a month that sees the club already play three away games and four home matches? A friendly that I can assure you WILL see Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore appear in.

What kind of message will this club be sending to the core of its support when Giovinco & Altidore play meaningless minutes as part of a cynical cash grab ( and risk Ronnie O’Brien season ending injuries for nothing!) when neither couldn’t be spared for even a few minutes to try and wrest the Canadian Championship away from Montreal – our number one RIVAL?
