Nash ready to back Whitecaps' entry into MLS

VANCOUVER and TORONTO -- Steve Nash, the two-time NBA most valuable player, has teamed up with Vancouver Whitecaps FC owner Greg Kerfoot in a bid to bring Major League Soccer to Vancouver for the 2011 season, sources told The Globe and Mail yesterday.

TORONTO -- The MLS All-Star Game is a focal point of the Major League Soccer season where the entire league gathers to discuss and celebrate the events of the previous year. It was therefore only fitting, said MLS Commissioner Don Garber, that the 2008 All-Star Game be held in the league's most prosperous new market in the wake of the league's most successful year. http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20080724&content_id=175209&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp

Though the league is still small in many ways, give MLS credit for continually doing the right thing.

The day before the All-Star game was teeming with activity, but the league choreographed each event to maximize media exposure. There was the West Ham training session followed by a news conference with manager Alan Curbishley and two players. They said all the right things about MLS; glad to be here and so on.http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/blogs/2008/07/23/dobson_good_on_garber/

TORONTO (AP) — Facing West Ham United in Thursday's Major League Soccer All-Star game will bring back a lot of memories for David Beckham.
The England international and Los Angeles Galaxy captain was born and raised miles from West Ham's stadium in East London. Influenced by his parents, Beckham grew up a fan of Manchester United, but many of his friends and neighbors cheered for the Hammers.
"It's great, being an East End boy, playing against West Ham so many times for Manchester United, and also scoring against West Ham, which didn't go down well with a few friends," Beckham said Wednesday after training with the MLS All-Stars.

Maturity brings out best in Buddle

Former top prospect delivering on promise for Galaxy

TORONTO - For Edson Buddle, the expectations came from birth. That's what happens when you're named after the greatest soccer player ever.

So why the turnaround? It's partially the coaching of Ruud Gullit, who has taught Buddle there is more to playing soccer than just scoring goals.
"I think before I was using energy in the wrong spots and not reading plays, not knowing how to adjust myself like a forward should," Buddle said. "Ruud is showing me those things and everyday it's a learning process and I'm just trying to take it all in. This year it's happening for me."

Impact enhances its chances in MLS's expansion

PAT HICKEY, The Gazette

Published: Thursday, July 24, 2008
Don Garber, the commissioner of Major League Soccer, is here this week for the MLS All-Star Game and he'll offer an insight into the league's expansion plans after a board of governors meeting today.

The good news for Montreal soccer fans: The city remains high on the list of expansion candidates and the Impact enhanced its chances Tuesday night when they played Toronto FC - the lone Canadian franchise in MLS - to win the inaugural Canadian Champions League.

Sporting a license plate with the letters CLBRTY on the front, the lanky milky-white stretch limo comes to a stop in front of Gate 4 at BMO Field, causing a gaggle of gawkers to gather around.
It's about 9:45 a.m. and David Beckham's MLS all-stars are less than an hour away from stepping on the pitch for their morning practice, a fact that the handful of autograph hounds are all too aware of.
Is this finally the arrival of Becks, the glamour boy of tonight's tilt between his MLS squad and English club team West Ham United?
Will wife Victoria, of Spice Girl fame, accompany him?
Maybe Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Hollywood's Ken-and-Barbie couple who have become close friends of the Beckhams', are inside too. http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/Sports/Soccer/2008/07/24/6249411-sun.html

MLS fans had better brush up on their French. They also might want to learn a few bars of "O Canada" for good measure.
That's because Montreal and Vancouver look certain to be candidates for the next two expansion teams added to the league, with a formal announcement coming around the MLS Cup this November.
Montreal Impact coach John Limniatis spilled the beans yesterday, telling reporters that, "The platform is already set ... We are already talking and aiming for a 2011 start [in MLS]."
Vancouver is said to be preparing to make a similar announcement, with Phoenix Suns' star Steve Nash as an ownership partner.
