Columbus is coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Houston. They had 60% possession and 18 shot attempts compared to Houston's 8. They just couldn't score.

Limit crosses into Kamara and overwhelm Higuain in the middle. Not much else in the way of threats for them.

Interested to see how Vanney approaches this defensively. Columbus do not have anywhere near the breakaway speed that Vancouver killed us with. Feeling pretty optimistic about this one.

A win here would put us in a great spot. I'm not worried about offence given our firepower at hand, but defensively I'd like to see us play a tighter game.

Higuain was just supremely unlucky on some of those shots. They'll want to make up for the wasted opportunities in front of their home crowd. Curious to see if Bloom starts over Crevalle. I'm sure everyone will be watching the tapes of the game and noting the problems TFC had with the high line in the first half and are already figuring out how to exploit it. I'm saying 1-1.

Not sure what the pitch is going to be like given the weather until this week. Between that, a home opener, and Columbus being a legitimate contender for the East crown, I'm thinking getting out of there with a point would be a good result for us. Its all going to be about who gets more space Higuain or Seba. I'd hope Bradley and Cheyrou could shut down Higuain.

Game of the week in my books.

We will eatz all their trilliumz.

Hopefully we can get a point this week, 1 or 3 next time and take all 3 at home this year to win the i75 copa al trillumz. Didn't we play them away twice last year as well? no matter

It will be interesting to see if Vanney can get it right for the first half as well. Good adjustment in Vancity but can we get a full 90 of tactical advantage.

Didn't we sweep the series against these guys last year? Honestly, with the squad we have now, there are no teams that I would be happy with a draw against. Cohesion is the only thing I would give to other team's as an advantage over us. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect to win every game, but there are no games that I would go into expecting to not win.

I love this. You went out of your way not to mention that award we get for doing that.g:D

Columbus had some chances against Houston but both teams played as sloppy as the other and both weren't up to TFC/Vancouver standards. It's only one day to look at but that's what we got to go on. We should be favourites, realistically and every other way one can look at it.

Even five dates out can be quite unreliable in terms of weather forecasts, systems can change on the fly. Friday will be when the we can all truly get a feel for what it will be. Regardless looking forward to Saturday in Columbus big time.

Yeah, exactly. I'll wait until about Thursday to see what the forecast says before I start planning what to wear for the bus trip.

no, they have a team that's far better than ours. anyone who watched Seattle-NE game will tell you that Seattle is on an another level compared to TFC. they have the talent and level of team chemistry yet matched by TFC

TFC looked good on paper last season too.

but until this team wins some trophies and looks to be a legit contender, I don't count chickens before they are hatched, especially when it comes to TFC

They are better then most, but Seattle have a team built for that turf. And they were playing a team without its midfield bite. They are not a greyhound team as much as a quick transition one.

Sunday April 12 they play at LAG. That's the real test. We play them in September. Probably will be injuries and suspensions involved by then, but I like our chances.

Actually, the OP said that all games are winnable. It never said anything about walking over or steamrolling anyone. I'm sick of hearing that a draw would be a good result, just because we're playing a good team. We have a good team too. Every team is beatable (including TFC BTW), and now more than ever we should actually be expecting to win games.

I'm curious how the boys play on a half frozen pitch, in nice warm weather if you've been in winter the whole time but fairly chilli if you have been in Florida and Vancouver for an extended period.

this will be an interesting test. I'd love to see the boys spoil a second home opener :)

Yeah... I dunno. I sort of agree with him. I actually followed MLS before Toronto, starting in about 2002. It was tame and aimed at parents and kids; they've changed their entire marketing approach because of the "firm" style fan support, and Seattle came to Toronto to learn from TFC before launching.

Additionally, Seattle and Portland were both in USL and drew flies; like, 4,500 per game if they were lucky. Two teams had been retracted, franchise fees were only $10M....

So how is he wrong, exactly? The league was losing money hand over fist until Toronto; now its franchises ARE its value. No Toronto, no Seattle. No seattle, no massive ramping up of values.

It's maybe hyperbolic to say the league would have failed, but it sure wasn't succeeding, despite what delusional fans in other cities might say.

That this came along as the same time as the rise of social media and reddit helped.

Not sure if the cruddy pitch still helps us. In the past, we didn't have guys who could find passing lanes. Maybe it'll slow down Higuain a little too, though.

The Crew are underrated as a team. A lot of their success last year seemed to come down to whether Tony Tchani and Will Trapp showed up. On paper we should beat them, but on paper we should beat pretty much anyone; our midfield is bonkers strong.

It was a shock loss for Columbus last week, Houston's GK had quite a workout. I don't think the defense will be able to keep up initially but I can see Columbus taking their foot off the gas after that. 2-2.

Supporter culture was around before TFC (see DCU) but TFC was the first team which gained the critical mass demographic shift that has has informed most of soccer supporter culture in North American in the last 8 years.

That this came along as the same time as the rise of social media and reddit helped.

Kelly can't say that and get eyeballs so in comes the hyperbole.

Agreed.

I don't know if TFC saved the league per say, but without that shift from soccer mom to supporter culture which the club accidentally stumbled on ... Things as they are today do not exist.

DCU is the original MLS supporter model, but TFC is the first to use it as a business model and market a authentic type game experience with success.

Gio's not going to get the amount of space he had in Vancouver. They play with a double pivot with Tchani and Trapp so it'll be interesting to see where he operates. Most likely he'll drift out to the left I think.

With the way the Krew possess the ball this is going to be a difficult game. As Vanney said today "they play in between our lines". Remember what happened against Vancouver when we played a high back line to try and close down that in between space. So because we can't play with a high back line that means Cheyrou and Bradley must stay right on top of our back four. This will let the CBs play a bit deeper and a bit wider. Cheyrou and Bradley are gonna get run off their feet and i suspect one of them will have to be subbed. if this is the case the good news is this strategy plays right into the area patrolled by our most talented players. I'm hoping Altidore can do some hold up work up top while Oso , Gio and Findley look to play off him. I think 1-1 would be a great result. (Higuain for them and TFC getting something from a set piece).

Well either two mids stay anchored or marking has to be tighter. With Morales dropping so deep there really wasn't anyone playing in that space against van. This will be a new challenge for sure.

It will be interesting to see if Vanney mixes up the 18 - ie Lovitz, Bloom, possibly Dike - travel like they are having will catch up to even highly trained athletes and it would make sense to rotate early to prevent that. As for the game, why are people so cautious? Nelsen's TFC beat them three times last season with far less midfield talent than this team has. 3-1 TFC.

Yeah...

Crew have improved in the off season, too, with several key pieces including strengthening the backline with the former Middleborough dude who's name has slipped my aging brain. They also got an impressive winger from, I think, Ghana, a winger from the Iceland national team.

On paper we should beat them.

I like Warner coming in for the midfielder holders; he really looked more like the player last game that we were told he was. Quick footwork to hold onto the ball, great delivery of a couple of passes, closed down lanes well.

I'm not sure you'll ever see Jozy at the top of a 433, just because they're trying to play to his strength, which is receiving the ball at his feet. I think we'll see the same flat 433 we finished with last week.

If they change anything it might be to have a third two-way midfielder on in the shape of Warner rather than Osorio; but he basically started the move last week that led to the first goal and held off Tiebert really well, so I think it'll be same lineup.

I suspect we may try the high line again with Creavalle told to stay back unless he knows he can make the run. (which is apparently (from Vanney) what the disconnect was last week)

That way you can crowd the midfield more.

Either that or something closer to what we say second half last week. I suspect as long as everyone is healthy and can handle the weather and pitch it'll be the same.

This was amusing:

Not that I ever think about the Trillium Cup, but I do hate Columbus.

I just don't like them, and i like it when they lose.

I actually like a list of western teams (Portland, RSL, SJ) that I will root for here and there. I'll probably add Houston to that list now, I've always admired their game.

Good news for travelling TFC support: Rain supposed to end early afternoon here in Columbus. Temps fairly mild.

The weather in Columbus tomorrow is gonna be wet with showers expected in the morning up until mid-afternoon and a high around 14 Celcius. Hopefully, things will dry up a bit by the 7:30pm kick-off, though the temperature is expected to dip down to around 8 or 9 degrees Celcius. Both clubs practiced in similar conditions as well today - grey and wet, but it was a bit cooler this afternoon. I suppose you can say it's typical spring weather for the region, and I doubt either team will have any environmental advantage playing tomorrow, of course that's not not counting the home crowd at Crew Stadium who will be there for the club's Home Opener.

Columbus is coming off a 1-0 away loss to Houston that could have easily been a solid draw or even a win for them. Kamara and Higauin both had some pretty great scoring opportunities that just could materialize for them. The match stats here paint a picture that doesn't suggest a Columbus loss (http://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2015-03-07-houston-dynamo-vs-columbus-crew-sc/boxscore), but you can't win a game if you can't find the back of the net. The last thing Columbus wants is another game to go that way against Toronto for their home opener, and I expect an even better performance from them than last week's. One thing to note is Tchani being on suspesion for the match this weekend. A good thing given his performance in Houston last weekend.

TFC, on the other hand is riding high after a solid away win in Vancouver that probably surprised more than a few people after Rivero's opening goal in the 19th minute. I don't think we can afford to play like we did in the first half against Vancouver - especially the backline. Columbus won't hesitate to exploit any defensive lapses on our part. What I'd love to see is three TFC goals by three of our Yank players - Bradley, Findley, and Altidore would work just fine by me - that's poetic justice! But in all honesty, I think a 1-1 or possibly 2-2 draw is the most likely result tomorrow. I'd love a win, but I will settle for the single point given how we're still more of a work-in-progress than Columbus is at the moment, and we're likely going to have a very hostile away crowd to play in front of.

That said, we do win when it rains*...

*please note: this claim has yet to be statistically verified. :D

Hi All looking for some suggestions to watch the game at a sports bar today. I know Shoelaces Joe's is the place to go. If so what time should you be there to get in? 6:30?

I live in the west end, are there any other sports bars in Burlington, Oakville or Mississauga that are TFC friendly?

Thanks

Yup, Sunderland got humiliated at home today by Aston Villa, 0-4!

He played Jozy as a holdup man at the top of the box for most of his tenure there, which he's always been, frankly, pretty average at. He scores when he has the ball on the move at his feet; he did set up eight goals though, so he was of value to them.

But Poyet is generally clueless. Like, really not very bright. On top of that, there have been stories in the local and national press about their players being spoiled socialites who just don't care that much because it's a "lower" premiership team. In that atmosphere, I'm not really surprised he failed to score goals and was unmotivated. Having watched them all of last season and having listened to their passionate but generally clueless fans, I admit to some schadenfreude that they look even worse without Altidore on the pitch.

If they stay up, it'll only be because a caretaker scares the fuck out of the stars and tells them to get used to the idea of being embarrassed by a permanent bench/u23 team role. But that's not how the Prem works; the primadonna talents will stay, give half a toss on the pitch, and make the next ex-player-who's-not-really-suited-to-manage struggle to survive beyond a season.

Character is the biggest issue, as we've learned at TFC. I see a lot of parallels; I just feel less sorry for them because of the way Altidore was treated generally. I'm not saying he's a premiership striker -- everyone remembers what happened to Mateja Kezman and numerous others when they left Holland for England -- but I know he'd have done better on a team full of motivated teammates, who used him the right way. At Southhampton, playing in the same role that he has now at TFC, I think he could be a ten-goal scorer over there.

Icing on the cake would be a hat-trick today.

Interesting poll on a Columbus fan site the other day noted something like 32% of them won't cheer against Altidore or Bradley due to the U.S. Nat team tie.

^ I think another common theme is Defoe = useless unless he gets service. The guy really has no impact on the game unless someone can feed him the ball in the right spots. No doubt he has world class finishing ability, but in terms of finding different ways to influence the game if plan A isn't working out.... looks a bit behind the times.

The same can be said for Jozy, best when they feed him the ball so that he is facing goal not with his back to it.

The goal he scored last week, he was facing goal when he received the pass.

He did look good with his back to goal as well but he didn't score on those occasions.

At least he is active in the game in the same way Gilberto was and will be able to create chances for others. Defoe last season got 2 assists last season and rarely was involved in the defence. Jozy in Vancouver was all over.

For that I think Jozy is going to be a much more valuable all around player... particularly with Vanney... I don't know what it would have looked like without Nelsen last year. We will see... I just hope we perform well this year and can play a season. :)

Good news! I picked up Air Parrot 2 because it allows me to push blocked games to Apple TV from my PC. They don't look quite as good as the streams in the native MLS Live app on my Apple TV, but it's better than nothing. I am watching the Vancouver/Chicago match right now.
