Every time I see these pictures I just keep thinking about how nice it will be a year later with a roof on top.

Can the original poster update their post with new additions?

I'm happy not having to scroll through 10 pages of jabber. was thinking of making one of these yesterday.

A conspicuous lack of branding by whoever the contractor is... can anyone confirm if it's PCL as was widely suspected?

None of the second section concrete was up on Friday when I drove by, so this is pretty recent. Maybe earlier today? They must working through the weekends.

In order to get this done on time they probably are working weekends. I know theyre working past sunset on weeknights as well. Seen them still working with stadium lights on past sunset.

once the roof goes in you're going to reallllly notice the stadium from the gardiner.

Good to hear. Sounds like MLSE is willing to pay the overtime to get it done on time.

At thf they didnt work through the nights because its in a resedential area and residents complained. I doubt infrastructure ontario was going to shell out the overtime anyways.

Since I paid little attention to the earlier thread with the phase plans of the renovation, I assume the west side is being raised as well? It's totally being dwarfed by the east stand going by these pics.

Nope. The west side will remain untouched and thus the east will be taller. The stadium won't be symmetrical at either end with the south being entirely different than the north as well. Once the roof is up, I doubt you'll notice much.

I don't see the harm in discussing the actual construction progress in here - I agree keep the Argos and other stuff in the other thread

Fresh from last night around 9pm - I saw a good few workers still on site

A mod just started this "pics only" thread yesterday. If you guys want only pics - don't post the "jabber"

As far as I'm concerned the people have spoken. I'll do my part not to contribute to the jabber past this info post.

If the original poster can update fresh pics at the top. I see no reason to not discuss the actual construction in this thread. The last one was hijacked with argos talk unrelated to the construction.

Does anyone think the renders look odd with the south end roof being much higher? I think a second stand above the south end would be needed to fill it out.

If so, it doesn't even look like it's been started - not that I know ANYTHING about construction at all...

The concourse is part of Phase 1. They demolished the south west steps.

I asked this question in the old thread. Ivy indicated the work on the south concourse would start soon.

With the Union Streetcars opening up again, this should be relieved a bit.

But I've often wondered whether there is a safety threshold for that underpass.

Great point, I've been wondering about this myself. We take the Go to every game, and, it gets a "wee" bit crowded. Throw another, possible, 8000 people into the mix...yikes.

it must be somewhat.
it is inevitable with the extreme cold we've had this month.

with that said, i live less than 1km from the stadium.
i purposely drive by it at least once per day.
and they are always working, and working late into the night.

All we need now, is:

a) The TTC to be aware that TFC exist and to put on extra streetcars pre-match

b) For them to have streetcars waiting in the Exhibition loop at the end of the match.

Has the club or city ever discussed a relief tunnel or bridge? The tunnel bottleneck are the stairs on the north side. However they are currently in the process of extending the tunnel to a new set of stairs north of a new 5th track. So those exiting to the train platform will go a different way than those going to Atlantic. This should effectively increase the capacity of the underpass.

Still, I'm glad I'm catching the Lakeshore East train.

I drive through Exhibition Place everyday on my way to work and have seen the renovations slowly coming together. Maybe I'll pull over one of these days and actually take a photo or two.

Progress is pretty slow and I don't see it being done by May.

Really? The treads and risers of the third section went up in about day. It looks like they are flying through that at least. Like any reno, I bet they're done the main structure fairly quickly. It'll be the finishings in the new bars , clubs, etc that take the time.

That's what I'm thinking. However they have to be on schedule they've accomplished a lot with the harsh winter we've had.

The finer details probably won't be done for opening day but I don't expect another THF debacle.

Most of the work being done is being done out of sight. What you're seeing when you drive by on the gardiner is just the tip of the iceberg.

The tunnel club (where the players come out) and the locker room area is completely unrecognizable. Although they still have a lot of work to do and they are slightly behind, they have a contingency plan because they have to be done by May 1st. No other option.

I live right downtown and am out the door by 6:45/7am, and pass quite a few of the construction projects going on in the core on my way to work, and they're already working on them at that time of the morning (yes, even the mornings from the past few weeks where it's been almost -30 with the wind chill).

If they can start work at 7am on downtown condos, they can work on BMO. Working outdoors is working outdoors, no matter what you're doing.

It's kinda fun sitting at a dead stop on the Gardiner in traffic in the construction zone that has been going on for a year now and will continue for another and watching the guys at BMO still hard at work at 11:00 pm.

I wasn't in the locker room, just the areas outside of it and the hallways around it. The biggest change I saw was the tunnel area. Completely redone.

how the wrap around concourse connecting West, South, East is shapping up.

Glad they are putting in a south west gate. They are certainly taking a chunk out of that slight bit of grass where kids to take part in the opening mingled around waiting.

As for the concourse, that's going to be interesting how the architecture changes the interaction of people across the stadium as a whole. Skydome on the 2nd and 5th levels often makes you think like you are running in an endless loop of places to buy beer and nachos - the lack of ability to see out is a major issue. The 1st level is much better for that with the openings towards the field. The upper levels feels like its designed for you to get out of there and back to your seats as quick as possible so that you can become part of the herd.

With this concourse and the roof, its going to be interesting how people interact. I've often felt that it is a MUCH different feel when you walk down to your seat as against up - descending into a comfort destination rather then ascending up to your perch. With more people descending into the south, that will be interesting to watch.

People on the east side sing? When do they have the time?

THEY DON'T FREAKIN SHOW UP UNTIL 30 MINUTES INTO THE GAME (111 excepted). :)

(As against people on the West side who show up 15 minutes late and then spend the rest of the game pondering what they are supposed to do without background noise a la the Raptors) :)

It is a shame the new stands won't block the view of that... I sat in the upper west side last year, and couldn't believe how many people were still streaming in well after kick off. Just don't understand it... and then they leave 10-15 minutes before the final whistle.

Anyone notice how lopsided it is... anyone know if the roof on both sides will be leveled? Or does the east side get to have that cold wet November west wind?

Leaving early and arriving late has been a problem for years. It's mostly transit related but there is a section of fans that don't care.

See Leafs, Jays and Raps. Fans come late leave early.

I know GO transit was on a half hour schedule for some of the season not sure how much that helped.

I know GO transit was on a half hour schedule for some of the season not sure how much that helped.GO has been half-hourly since end of June 2013.

Doesn't seem to change arrivals much. Many coming from the west seem to still show up at kickoff, instead of 30-minutes earlier. I think it's cut down on people leaving early a bit. Though the odd occasion I've walked out when the final whistle blows and raced to catch an eastbound train, there's been plenty of people already in the station who left early. Though it partly depends on where you sit. The season I was in 104, I could catch the train no problem after the whistle. Couldn't do that in 220. From 114 I need the train to be running a couple of minutes late (and few injuries!).

I think it's just a Toronto thing. Though I haven't seen it as much at the couple of Rugby games at BMO I've attended. But they are such rare events ...

Sometimes you'll see me leave early with a fussy baby, who has had it. Though most of the folks on the GO platform don't seem to have that encumbrance. I really don't get it with half-hourly service.

Good to know. I don't take it. Usually get a ride to Joes from Ivy or catch the streetcar and I'm at Joes in 15 Mins after a quick walk up Dufferin.

Seems to be the Toronto disease then.

It's not just a sport thing. It's fashionable to be late for everything here.

Throwing a party at 8? Good luck having the bulk there by 10.
Want to go to a bar on a weekend? Nobody's going till midnight.
etc

Everyone loves to cut it close or show up right at the last moment....except our transit is falling apart/is slow + traffic sucks generally... and it doesn't really work out so well. Not to mention the bottlenecks everywhere, GO tunnel, TTC gates, etc.

We are rarely late, and it is only due to traffic, transit woes, fix that and people won't be late. As for leaving early, fix the fucking congestion at the GO station and people can leave at the end of match and catch that train, but I have missed the train by mere minutes because of that stupid tunnel congestion. Put a fucking footridge to Atlantic Avenue so pedestrians don't have to cut through the Westbound platform access.
Idiotic planning of Toronto and the CNE. Rant is over. Can't wait for the Home Opener. Thanks for posting the pictures.

I have anxiety disorder, I have to arrive early so I'm at the front of the line, grab a beer and a slice (or something fun when scotched eggs were there) and take my seat... last year was the first time I sat in the upper deck, so it was the first time I realized just how many there were, I just assumed they were getting food or something.

That tunnel should be the logo of Toronto's planning department. It typifies everything we do wrong. Then again, it could also be the Leslie/Lakeshore intersection, the Gardiner, Union Station, Queen's Quay. Take your pick really.

I'm surprised how rickety the south-east corner of the new stand looks. A single steel beam holding up the corner, no cross support until you're down to the level of the old east stands, concrete laid up on top. I'm sure it's all perfectly safe, just looks a big odd.

Those openings are going to happen - they just haven't been worked on yet. I'm not even sure they have a concourse level to attach to.

To your seats being gone, others who are losing seats have been contacted already. Have you looked for your seats on the season ticket purchase 3d viewer? Row and seat information is available on there.

Oops I just looked again. My seats were actually two rows back from the other person. So I was row 22 seats 1 and 2. I split the season tickets with my brother. We had to move to the other side of 110 because of this construction. What a disappointment. That exact group of people made me laugh every game which was such a treat during bad losses. I know from frequent past experience that this is not what they have done previously - they historically went to mini packs by early February, and single game sales in late February. Of course they have an extra 6 weeks because of the late season opener, so can't say for sure.

Seems to me they would want to sell single games by the time the season starts, they are losing sales based on some level of trial interest generated by last Saturday's game

I agree it's a basic design, cement and more cement, it'll be all up to the tradesmen now with plumbing and electricians, and the like. But with new suites I expect those to be a bit tricky. Kitchens, stove, electrical. Will the new sections be winterized.? As far as fire code the major work is done, simply access and egress to get out. Don't think they'll have fire alarm systems or sprinklers. God I hope they have foolproof rails because non of these photos don't do it justice. It is Steep!... Amazing view.

Is it common to just bolt the seats on the concrete like that? Two things came to mind:
- Can't put your drink or bag or anything else under your seat. In the old areas of the stadium, that's a nice place to hide things.

- If it's a cold day, doesn't it make even colder to be sitting almost right on the concrete like that?

Typically there are steel mounts drilled into the precast. The seats are then attached to those. Without asking them I'd guess the pic was staged to show they are ready for that phase.

Luckily, the reno spared my seats, but I think they really botched the thing. is the lower level remaining steel, with an upper concourse of concrete? I think it would have been better to scrap the east side completely, and build something that maintained the intimate feel of BMO Field.
These seats appear to be a mile from the action, and geared more towards the Argo crowd. They went about 10 rows too high.
I could be wrong of course, we wont know until it's completed, and then again when the roof is added in phase 2.

They will probably have to do a test event before the real opening to iron out any kinks. Similar to what they did before the first game in 2007.

My guess would be they will air the May 2nd Philly game on the scoreboard in the stadium.

Has TFC comfirmed blue outside of a rendering? Seems silly to me to go BMO blue if the deal ends very soon. Having said that, the colour really doesn't matter as long as they're filled.

Looking at those aerial shots, you can help but wonder what a bear pit of a stadium that would be if a big second tier was added across the south end, with a big, shiny fuck-off roof jointly looming over the top.

My favorite stadiums are(were) all tight, two-tiered structures that create a dense, tight atmosphere and great noise. They would include:

The Mestalla, Valencia; Westfalenstadion, Dortmund; White Hart Lane, London; Loftus Road, London; The Dell, Southampton.

When Spain or Germany absolutely must have their national team win a game, the first two parks listed are where they have gone in the past. None of their opponents dreamed of playing in those parks as kids. They might have dreamed of The Bernabeu or Nou Camp or other famous grounds. But they never dreamed of those gritty, fan-first parks, The Mestalla raising fans in huge, luge-run steep slopes, Westfalenstadion with the roar of the Sudtribune, the biggest and loudest single stand in Europe - a tourist destination nowadays in its own right.

And they won't dream of them afterward because they are usually a nightmare to play in. That's what we have to strive for. For TFC and our national teams

Which, of course, means there will be the slightest need for a horseplop CFL team.

The whole thing has to have a sealer applied to it as well before seats go down so that people won't slip when it's wet.

You can see it being applied here in the upper section at Tim Hortons Field last year

Pic was staged...those seats come mounted to a metal track that gets bolted down in front of the vertical concrete sections. They will be putting down rows instead of one seat at a time. They do not get mounted directly to the concrete.

I agree. those seats would hard and be Sh*t to sit in ... your feet wouldn't even hit the ground.
Normally they are flip down seats and they are mounted 4-6 at a time and screwed into to the vertical of the concrete, not sit on top of the horizontal. The metal and plastic of the seat gives a bit and makes it more comfortable. You feet will go where those fake seats were placed.

Also another interesting bit. In Wagners first picture you can see the support for the light standard running through the new concourse. Next year when the roof is in place the lights will be fixed to the new roof. And those candlestick light standards will have to be removed. Looks like they ripped up some seats at the bottom on the "N" and the "T" likely for the change room construction

I also see they have demo'd some of the private suites on the west side - they are probably being moved to the east side

I don't see that in the photo? Where are you seeing it? North or south end?

Yes, it seems both north end and south end of the west side have had suites taken out which opens up (for now?) the corners to the concourse.
Question - were the north end field level seats always two tone ? Could those darker north end seats be retractable? Remember - a big part of fitting a CFL field into that stadium is extending the field by 35 yards. Every yard they can find in the north end means a less expensive phase 3 reno (paid for by CFL/Argos?) to the south end...

That might change wind directions on the field a bit.

I think those are seats that are removable - not retractable - like the sideline seats
