Who can't wait to hear Defoe say what his time here was like?

Who can't wait to hear Defoe say what his time here was like?

Ask his mom.

"Yeah, it was great in Toronto. Great City. Great people. Enjoyed my time there. But, when offered the chance to do something, to do something special here, in England, at a team with a great tradition, I thought it was a good thing."

Is it you? Is it really you!?!:)

Hat tip to Ensco. Looks like we have to do a deal with the Impact

Another bloody big deal. Source confirms #TorontoFC (https://twitter.com/hashtag/TorontoFC?src=hash) has sold Jermain Defoe to Sunderland. Altidore to TFC has to go thru allocation route.

Appreciate that, although it seems I mostly got Defoe's value wrong. We won't really know until all the details leak out.

Montreal are going to get PAID if in fact this does go through allocation.

Yup a bloody big done deal

Sunderland and Toronto FC have agreed to a deal to swap strikers, with Jozy Altidore heading to the MLS club and Jermain Defoe returning to the Premier League, sources confirmed to ESPN FC.

I wouldn't be so sure, since, if they ask for anything crazy unreasonable, we could just pass on Altidore, altogether, looking elsewhere to fill the DP slot; I could take him or leave him, myself, and I wouldn't be shocked if the TFC FO feel in some respects similarly.

I forsee Altidore going to Montreal, if they want him, without TFC batting an eyelid. From a business perspective it makes the most sense. And TFC is a business first, football club third or fourth.
Altidore doesn't sell lots of tickets, and hardly inspires a marketing campaign. I bet he's thrown into the deal 'cause TFC couldn't get their "valuation" for Defoe, so it's a way to save face when they told the whole world they'd not sell for less.

Altidore won't come to a random club. That can't work for him. This has to be pre-arranged somehow.

we supposedly recouped the entire transfer fee for Defoe, how would we not have met our valuation? we met our valuation literally on the dot, and then some with Altidore thrown in on the side.

The price for Altidore was Defoe. Montreal couldn't pay that price so they had to pass on their spot in the allocation order. So did the next team, and the next team... until it reached a team that could.

Its funny, the league wants to avoid the Jermaine Jones fiasco that happened last year, yet its equally mickey mouse to put a process there and still have the player delivered to the chosen club.

In the end this allocation process adhered to or not is a joke, its meaningless.

I'm speculating, yes. But even if we "met" the transfer fee, I still believe the rest of it until all the details are out.

Never ever underestimate the stupidity of premier league chairmen

I'm just glad it's not going to drag out for the rest of the month!

But this case is slightly different, as it involves a player-for-player trade between two teams. To me, this falls outside the allocation order. Isn't that the way it works between MLS clubs?

Its a good point, but teams in the MLS don't sign any players, we just get the ability to have a club in the league. All players are owned by the MLS hence the allocation order having importance. Your point is a good one but utimately its lost due to the structure.

MLS needs to allow clubs to do their own deals, its the only way to shed this shroud of darkness around these deals. Transparency is going to be key for this league to get taken seriously.

If Defoe does what he always does, which is score on pretty much any chance, he'll be well worth the money. Altidore on the other hand, couldn't score if he was given 1,000 chances.

In all seriousness, I think he'll do fine in MLS. Not crazy happy excited about him coming here.

Jeff Carlisle is having some interesting interactions with people on Twitter atm. Seeming to suggest the teams ahead of us in the allo order may pass.

.@RescindedRed (https://twitter.com/RescindedRed) Not necessarily. Montreal could've (& likely) passed if they had no interest/couldn't afford Jozy & wanted to keep top spot.

@JeffreyCarlisle (https://twitter.com/JeffreyCarlisle) Does that mean TFC traded with Montreal to be at top of allocation ranking or that the 5 teams ahead of Toronto passed?

.@WestonFL_John (https://twitter.com/WestonFL_John) My understanding is the latter.

I'm hoping that by being over the top negative about it, he turns out to beat my incredibly low expectations.

I have a theory. I call it the BWP effect.

Altidore will score a bucket load of goals here so English fans can claim "MLS is shit, Altiodre is the top scorer there and he couldnt kick snow off a rope"

I like how in Kelly's article today it mentioned Defoe moved all his things home long before this deal was done.

I never put it up here, but someone I know bumped into defoe in a washroom over in England a few weeks ago. Asked him if he was coming back to Toronto and Defoe just laughed and said 'no chance'.

Your friend must have restraint because I likely would have said something excessively off colour to him after that response.

Any idea what he disliked about being here?

No specifics were given, I would just chalk it up to he likes it in England a lot more than here. That being said, had a good talk with Bradley a month ago and he loves it here, no question in my mind about his sincerity.

I guess he just didn't get enough of days like yesterday and today. He would have loved it with more cold weather.

They are trapped by (or at least outgrowing) their own rules which were created at a time when dealing with a very different class of players (demand wise). Players of note are going to tell the league where they want to play, not be told where to play. And the league will have to make that happen.

This...

Honestly - this is a classic move for a team flirting with relegation. Sunderland are in 16th and have the second worst goals for in the league. They are going to drop whatever they can afford (or can't afford) to stay up. The amount of money they lose if they go down pales in comparison.
