Toronto has won its last 2 meetings with Columbus.

Very Hopeful Starting XI (Most likely Bradley as AM and Warner as DM though)

Massive game that we need a result to stay in the playoff race. If Crew played the same way they have in beginning of the season, then TFC just needs to pack middle of the field and force them to cross the ball. It seem like this game plan worked last time we played against them.

Massive indeed. A win for either team will be huge in the standings.

Going to need a DM to handle Higuain. Warner it will be.

I think our speed can kill them, and Oduro will be motivated as heck.

Still concerned about the defence.

That and in the back of my mind, I'm wondering when Bradley gets his 5th yellow and is out for a game.

I am usually in the Osorio over Warner camp, but playing against Higuain I agree Warner is needed.

Osorio on the wing over jackson is what I would like to see again. Either that or a 4-5-1

Oduro - Bradley - Osorio - Jackson

Its not a must win I agree but it would be nice to pick up 3 points against teams that are below us and get some separation between us and the rest fighting for the last place off places.

We have to keep in that 3rd spot and not slip into that play in game.

Pookie

Can we define must win?

Is the consensus that nothing becomes a must win until very late in the season? If so, that is the kind of thinking that saw some in University panic at an essay deadline while others relaxed and collected their high marks having completed it well before it was due.

Points now matter later. 100% correlation to points earned in the regular season and qualifying for the playoffs.

This is a regular season game so go out and win it.

According to Bez nothing is a must win because we are in 3rd place in a weak conference.

Granted, finishing 5th in a 10 team conference should be a chip shot. However, I respectfully disagree with a nonchalant attitude towards dropping points. Particularly against teams in our conference.

Every game is a must win, if you want to be a winner. Winning means you are better than the opposing team, winning also means you are a winner not a loser. I think that is what we want, correct.
So the gobble-de-gook out there that it is only a must win late in the season is comical. If teams to have the drive and desire to win, then they are losers. Just a few thoughts.
3-0 TFC, how about another clean sheet.

Would expect this lineup to be trotted out based on Montreal performance and injuries. I do like the addition of creativity with Oso over Jackson and think Warrener and Bradley provide enough coverage when Oso cuts inside for that 4-3-3 attacking look. Oduro keeps the speed factor without Jackson and seems to be more effective going forward. Lets go Gilbertron!

There is 14 games left. 8 at home and 6 on the road. All eight home games are against struggling teams, but because TFC is TFC, probably will drop a game or two. Of the six away, two are super tough (SKC and LA), one is tough (RBNY). Chicago is terrible but TFC's record at TP is poor, so likely draw. That leaves Columbus and Philly as the best hope to get road points, which we will need.

That's a good synopsis. 7 wins (50 points) pretty much guarantees a playoff spot, although 45 points will likely be all that is needed. Would love to at least hit 50 though. This is definitely one we need to win to do that.

Quick aside that i think is worth mentioning- This past week has shown there is a sections worth of Ghanains in Toronto that sing, play, and dance plenty times bigger than the good ole TRN folks. I'd sure love to see them show up wearing some Oduro kits at our next match.

We didn't give them space on the wings. We let them hoof it in from the midfield, but this time they're just crossing it in from the wings. If they keep doing that, they're bound to get a chance or a lucky bounce at some point.

Oduro's speed can be a massive asset - especially in MLS when you're often forced to chase down balls that are off-target - but he should be kept as far away from the front of goal as humanly possible.

It looked to me like the Crew player won the header, it missed Moore's hand by maybe an inch -- or maybe brushed his fingers -- but the ball wasn't impeded and it was in midst of a jump, so unavoidable. I dunno, pretty damn harsh to call that a handball penalty. And some of the non-calls so far have been sort of astounding.

They should hold a clinic on calling fouls where the CB cleans out the striker from behind. I feel bad for Gilberto, tries to play with his back to goal and they just crash through the back of him and take his feet out.

But - penalty call aside - the officiating in this league continues to be brutally inconsistent and not confidence inspiring. They could easily get swept up in a match fixing scandal with standards so low.

It was Morrow first of all.

He jumped up to challenge and his arm was extended. The Crew player's header hit his arm clean.

Then it's just interpretation on whether Morrow's actions were deliberate enough to warrant the call. I don't see how you can describe it as anything other than "ball to hand". He's jumping for a header and being pushed by other players, the fact his arm is in the air is pretty normal. Not like he's going to jump up like a stickman with his arms glued to his sides.

Unfortunately the "hand to ball vs. ball to hand" stuff is incredibly subjective in practice. I suppose maybe the ref also takes into account where a "ball to hand" incident leads to the ball diverting from a potential scoring trajectory.

Our attack is really improving, we are creating lots of opportunities, runs off the ball good, passing solid and our speed on the counter attack is creating real problems for other teams. If we can become more clinical in our finishing we can be really dangerous. Nelson said we needed to generate 50 goals as a team for the year and we are on track. What separates us from the top teams is defence. It's a whole combination of things: Goal tending, back line issues, midfield and possibly tactics. At this point it does not seem to be improving, so it may be a longer term solution.

If Berthalter is there a year from now, I'll be surprised. Although it takes a full season to turn around a team, Berhalter doesn't seem to have a plan on how to do that. He's not building from any base. And he seems to have no clue how to find players.

Looking at their team, it looks a lot like the one we had out there early last season - not quite MLS class journeymen mostly, except Higuain and a few promising youngsters.

I mean, maybe it's true, but to say that to the media? Yeesh.

first game I didn't see or go to this year as I had the opportunity to go to the Ottawa Fury game instead (which was great by the way. If Ottawa is angling for an MLS team they're doing a fantastic job. everything is in place pretty much) but it sounds like we dominated and were unlucky not to win by more. Sounds great. We're now comfortably in third with games in hand on everyone around us. I love it. Let's finally shut SKC the fuck up next Saturday.

Goaltending has been the LEAST of our problems for all these years.....but now that we have a half decent side...they better upgrade over Bendick...because he's RUBBISH....

Did anyone else get a little flash of Jimmy B on that last minute Bradley free kick?

Great feeling to win this game. Dare we all say it that this looks like real soccer?

Yes. Irrespective of our record, the most encouraging aspect of our game is that it has steadily evolved since the beginning of the season. We seem to able to hold possession now for vast stretches in every game.

Currently on the Greek Islands with an internet connection that works sparingly at best. Tried staying up to watch the game but I passed out / internet wasn't doing it for me. Checked the score this morning. Very happy to see the W.

Wasnt the best quality, but they were better when they had to be. Gilberto was clearly the most dangerous player on the pitch and he hasn't reached his peak, I have big expectations of him now that I've seen what he can do. His strike was another special goal, not many players can strike it that hard in that part of the net, in fact he was the only one on the pitch that could. He seems to excel playing as the main man. I remember he wasn't getting respect from his teammates early on, the likes of Moore and Defoe would raise their arms at him. I think it's safe to say they know what g can do now. He's an elite level talent. Moore compliments him well. Moore doesn't have the best strike, but he's an underrated playmaker and is great around the net. I also wasn't aware he was 28 I thought he was 33...

moving Defoe out :out::out::out:

At some point, these little "tweaks" become a bit of a trend do they not?

No budget relief for injured players. At some point you have to start asking if the value for him on the bench outweighs the potential value of having a healthier player available… or at least more likely to play in key games. Or even in another position (ie. CB, M)?

Return of Dike. The obvious quality of Gilberto and the factors such as age and muscle breakdowns are working against Defoe. That makes this a very valid question.

Beckham was injured all the time too. Leiweke won't cut a big name signing in the second year of his contract. later on maybe. But it's more likely Defoe retires than we cut him before his contract ends.

I was saying last night that I don't know what went down during the WC break but we came out looking like a different team after that two week break. I am also impressed that Nelsen said the style would change for the better earlier in the season and it actually did. I thought we'd still be playing chippy, countering long ball style. Although he gets bashed on here a lot for his inexperience I think Nelsen deserves some credit for where we are now.

He's been playing without an offseason and how do u explain him having the 6th most minutes on our team?

He doesn't get bashed anymore, so cut that one off before it becomes a pointless, pages debate.

When was the last time more than a couple of people on here bashed him? It's been a while; let's let that chestnut die on the fire.

The top paid guy is 6th in mins (right now) and that's good? ;)

You think he will be 6th most in mins by season end? Next season? When he is 34? 35?

I explain it in that he had a healthy run in between a series of injuries. Many of which happened before this "no offseason."

It's a bad contract in a league that offers no budget relief to replace him.

Great player. What are the odds that this past year and a bit (look at the history) is an anomaly?

You may be right and there is no risk. He may be healthy through the next 3 and a half seasons. Never missing another game.

I don't believe that will be the case.

I think you ride him through the year. MLSE keeps him to renew tickets through the renewal period. Let him go on loan in the fall/winter and if someone wants to keep him (or he wants to stay) you move on and improve the team with a less risky DP option.

Nelsen is a serious coach of the year contender at this stage of the season.

The question is valid but you raising those particular players in relation to health is a bit funny. I held my breath when Gilberto went down(Oduro first, though) and when I saw Dike I couldn't help but hope they don't play him for a couple weeks AFTER he thinks he's ready just to be sure.
