This came up in a thread somewhere over the weekend in relation to the question whether Nelsen's system makes us more difficult to break down. Since no one had the exact answer and I'm at work today, I decided to check. Looks like we are in fact harder to score on. I apologize in advance if the formatting goes all screwy once it's posted. Looks fine from the compose screen.....

I think the problem for people is the whole season looks good so far.......

from the compose screen.

Watching it on TV, that's another matter. :)

And that is reflected in the GF's column.

I find it funny that we have more goals than the Galaxy though.

I calculated the same numbers mid-week last week (prior to the shutout against NYRB) - I believe we were middle of the pack. With a small sample size, one game with no goals conceded can make a big difference.

Also worth noting in this regard - 2 of those goals against came directly from Henry's individual errors which had no bearing at all on Nelsen's system. While they still matter from a numbers games, if there had not been those two errors we would look even better.

On the flip side, it would be interesting to see how many shots on target we have against to see if it is Nelsen's system keeping things low or good goal keeping. I don't think that number is easily available, but I don't recall too many keeper heroics keeping us in there. Some good saves for sure, but no bombardments.

Also - assuming you still have the data handy, could you run goals for per game as well?

Sure. I can tell you we have the same goals for per game as goals conceded....doesn't tell you the placement in the league though.

^ So that's sorted now by goals for. Obviously we are near the bottom there. So the team is pretty good at not conceding, not so good at scoring. Defoe missed three games I believe.

So TFC currently sits 5th in the league in PPG. That's better than I expected at this point.

Stats make your head spin.

You'd think giving up goals would be correlated with losing. Yet the team with one of the best goals against is 18th.

Also played only 9 games. They are much better on ppg. ed: well not much better but somewhat better....

Interesting stat: If you include the champions league, TFC's record is 6-4. Of those 10 games, the big 3 (Defoe, Bradley and Cesar) have all played together in only 4 of those games. Taking that in i'd say our record ain't that bad at all.

Cesar most likely gone after World Cup according to Nelsen today. Does that change the outlook?

As of now i wouldn't say it changes at all. Bendik has only played a few games this year but i think he looks miles better than last year.
