View Full Version : Wilmington Hammerheads 2014 Season Discussion

I figured with Toronto FC partnering with Wilmington for the 2014 season, and us sending players on loan to Wilmington, there'd be enough interest to warrant a general thread for anything TFC-Wilmington related for the upcoming year, but probably not enough that each match would get its own thread. So this thread is for any news relating to Wilmington as well as in-game discussion as the season goes on.
Wilmington Twitter (https://twitter.com/WilmHammerheads)
Wilmington Schedule (http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/2014/22403.html#SCHEDULE)
USL Pro Standings (http://uslpro.uslsoccer.com/standings/)
The 2014 USL season kicks off this weekend, but Wilmington's first game of the year is April 5th vs. Harrisburg. Every 2014 USL Pro game will be streamed for free. Games can be streamed from the home team's Youtube channel, and all games will also be archived on Youtube and available for viewing on-demand.
TFC has announced (http://www.torontofc.ca/news/2014/03/three-players-assigned-wilmington) that Quillan Roberts, Manny Aparicio, and Daniel Lovitz have been assigned to Wilmington for the start of the season. It sounds like the 4th TFC player to be assigned (MLS-USL partnerships require a minimum of 4 players be loaned to the USL club) will be decided on a temporary, as-they-need-playing-time basis.

First piece of news: no video, but Wilmington had their second preseason game today and I believe first since TFC players have been assigned. Lovitz scored Wilmington's lone goal (https://twitter.com/WilmHammerheads/status/446426363537657857) off a free kick in a 2-1 loss to Coastal Carolina University (both goals for Coastal from PKs).

Great thread!
I know we have a couple port city firm on here(or were on here a bit)... maybe we can get them to keep us up to date on preseason?

On Saturday, July 19 Wilmington will be in Rochester to take on the Rhinos, the closest USL Pro team to Toronto. It is about a 2 hour and 45 minute drive to Rochester from Toronto. That night the Reds are in Houston, so it would great if we could get some of us down there cheering on the Reds on loan and the rest of the Hammerheads.

Notthesun - great idea to start an ongoing thread,
Red CB Toronto - another great idea re: July 19 in Rochester. Think we will note that on our calendar.

I'm looking forward to the first game on April 5th. Since all the games are streaming for free online, I'm going to follow their season as closely as I can.

An affiliation like this is going to be fun.
We need some hammerheads to teach us some chants for when we invade Rochester!

Lovitz and Q started. Hamilton was subbed on late on but unable to break the dead lock. And Manny was no where to be seen? Maybe injured ? Anyone know if he is ok

Lovitz needs to be recalled. His ability to put a ball into the box is something we don't have at the moment and he has pace to burn. Defensively, he tracked back and was strong in the tackle. He was excellent again.

So who is coming down to Rochester on July 19 to support the Hammerheads?
Has anyone reached out to the Port City Firm? If they were planning on 1 big road trip it should be Rochester. That way we could also go down and support with them for the game at 7:05pm then hit the nearest bar and all of us can watch TFC in Houstank at 9:05pm (may miss a few minutes)

I've watched a few minutes of this and quite enjoying it. They play some decent football for a lower side.
Refs (as usual for north america) somewhat dubious. No confidence to deal with players so they remonstrate like it's a mens league game, linesman woefully hopeless when it comes to getting the onside calls right.

They need to keep him where he is. He has a lot of talent, but still has habits he can more easily work out at the current level rather than jumping up to the first team. All goes to schedule he'll make an overwhelming case for being on the first team next year... and garner consideration for playing time.

at this moment, TFC does not need Hamilton. a year at Wilmington will do good for Hamilton's confidence esp if he keeps banging in goals like he is right now.
and best case is that Hamilton returns from USL loan like Dom Dwyer did, and start scoring at MLS level
Another big part of a loan in wilmington for guys like Manny, Hamilton, Roberts is that they are living away from home.
This is as much of a maturation process for the players off the field as it is on the field. Sort of the same thing they would learn going to university away from home, these kids need to learn how to live away from mom/dad/friends/comfort zone etc

Plus I think the USL deal with MLS specifies four players per team at any one time. Richter could still fit in there after the window opens, as Lovitz returned. The word on Aparicio is he's taken longer to adjust to the pace of pro play and the physicality. But he has contributed some nice buildup and a good goal. Early days for him. People have to remember that Canadian kids often get promoted through because they're quite good at one dimension of the game, as we have a much smaller selection pool. This was very much the case with some of the kids who haven't made it with TFC, so it doesn't entirely surprise me if he's not starting ahead of American players who are overall better athletes and more rounded in their game.

I would imagine that marketing materials have been in production for a while and i would guess Defoe gets a 30-45 min run out. We owe them a little bit as we have only given them 3 players for most of the season when the minimum we were supposed to give is 4.

What transfer restrictions do you speak of, I had heard something about if players were left there after a certain date they had to stay until the end of this season, but never had it confirmed? I really believe TFC will end up with its own USL TFC 2 team operated within its own setup.

I haven't seen it confirmed either so I hope I'm wrong.
I never considered that the loaned players would be subject to transfer window deadlines. This is a country to country issue, rather than a league to league issue. If US based MLS teams can continue to move players back and forth with their affiliated USL PRO club (also located in the US) and TFC can't, then IMO that's it on the affiliation deal with Wilmington. TFC will need an affiliate located in Canada not only for convenience but also in order to maintain loan flexibility after the summer window deadline.

Is it just me or was recalling Q a terrible idea? He was starting every game down there, getting first team minutes for the first time in his career and doing really well too. But we brought him back for what? So he can sit on the bench if Bendik gets injured? Wilmington still have 11 games left, Q needs every one he can get. It makes no sense, there must be more to it.

I wonder if Wilmington is having second thoughts about this affiliation deal. Well, TFC also.
TFC has just Manny Aparicio on loan. And TFC technically is suppose to loan 4 players to Wilmington.
Wilmington basically had the carpet pulled out under them with Hamilton and Lovitz recalled from loan. Nelsen doesn't think Wilmington is doing good enough job, or USL is not good enough for Hamilton's development. Hamilton scored some goals for Hamilton.
With roster instability, Wilmington had to look for other MLS teams for emergency loans but too late to stop their losing record. They are 12th in USL and I think they just fired their head coach.
I realize TFC's interest has to come first, but it's not been a good affiliation relationship for Wilmington

I realize TFC's interest has to come first, but it's not been a good affiliation relationship for Wilmington
The international transfer restrictions haven't helped either. If Wilmington was in Canada, Q wouldn't have been recalled.

Yep. This is the worst thing about it. I think it was going well until they realized they couldn't send players back and forth anytime they wanted like they could if it was two teams in the same country.

I wonder if Wilmington is having second thoughts about this affiliation deal. Well, TFC also.
TFC has just Manny Aparicio on loan. And TFC technically is suppose to loan 4 players to Wilmington.

TFC trying to address this a bit? Just loaned academy kid Mark-Anthony Kaye to them.

looks like they just signed him. He is a product of our academy and i believe a few of the academy guys were training with them the past month but this is not a TFC player going to Wilmington it is a TFC academy player signing for someone else.
I assume this was arranged via the front office and Wilmington

It it is your lucky day, there is video of the mess that was the Hammerheads/Orange County on Saturday night in USL Pro action, 3 read cards, the coach coming down and kicking the ball away from an opposing player on a corner kick attempt, a bench clearing brawl that saw everyone dash for the locker room and goal in the 100th minute. To kick it all off it Military appreciation night with a bunch of kids in the building. For your viewing enjoyment being the proceeding at the 90 minute.

wtf.
that was crazy.
When the league has to make a special statement after your match, that's usually not a good thing.

Yup. He won the game for them. Plus new goalie was outstanding making a few world class saves.

I made it to a WH home game on Wednesday, being down in the area for a visit. Ending in a 0-0 draw vs Orlando City. Notable for OCSC, it clenched the reg season top of the table position for them. A win would have gained a playoff berth for WH, but they got the remaining point they needed tonight at Dayton.
The stadium complex they play at is not too bad. I've seen a lot of those types of multi-sport complexes and I thought it was decent. Didn't get an official attendance. Wasn't packed but seemed like a big crowd to me.
I know it's unlikely that the affiliation deal will be continued if the latest rumors are true, but I did enjoying following WH some this year.

8,000 fans saw Wilmington get a lesson in footy, lost 4---1
A very good experience for the TFC boys tho I would think.
