I had that same thought (mentioned it in another thread)...

Then found out Columbus sent the 4th overall pick, plus (reportedly) 100k allocation to NER for his rights.
Plus they signed him to a deal for over 300k!

Way too expensive for it to make sense for TFC - both the trade and the contract.

Parkhurst is going to lockdown Crew defence for next 3 yrs. He's there with upper tier of MLS defenders. I think he's worth it. Paying inflated price due to his USMNT status, but that's just the way it is.

No idea, but I hope so, just because I want to see this, in the inimitable words of the Telegraph's Barney Ronay describing a Clasico:

Every now and then Xavi's noble, hollow-eyed pouchy little face will appear looking completely out of place in all this sleek hyper-modernity, as if a beret-clad left-bank poet of the 1950s accidentally wandered into Spearmint Rhino after losing his spectacles.

Well I wouldn't go that far, confusion still reigns. Apparently, he is under contract with the cosmos but will be loaned to Vancouver for the upcoming season. Lot's of speculation surrounding this and unfortunately, VWFC is again caught off guard while players/agents test the confines of MLS contract rules & negotiation. Couple of points out of this:

1. Ives speculating he signed with the cosmos because the league didn't offer (or couldn't offer) a guaranteed contract. This way, he gets the guaranteed money of the NASL deal, while still being able to play in MLS.

2. It is not clear what MLS / Vanoucer actually knew at draft time. It appears the situation wasn't as in control as they thought it was. As with the Camilo deal, they'd like to have this one swept well under the rug rather than look weak in the face of player / agent negotiation tactics.

3. Cosmos starting to make noise and being a real pain in MLS's ass. Yet to be seen if anyone else will join them, but the waring league theme of north american soccer might not be entirely dead yet.

Anyone have any updates on Freddy Montero?

Will Seattle haev to sell him after such a great start to the season in Portugal?

Last I heard they were offering 2.5M euros.

You'd think they would offer more for the leading scorer in the league.

This cant be good for MLS to lose its best players

MLS is a feeder league. If Montero wants to play in Europe, especially after having proven that he can play there, hard to keep him in MLS. Seattle pockets the money and reboot their squad. They can seriously use the allocation money

sporting doesnt usually buy players that late in their career for too much money, unless they see huge potential.

This bodes well for MLS, young players will come here as a spring board. And as the cap goes up, they stay longer and longer

You're right; there are huge benefits for us and the league (perception) if players see this as a viable springboard to get noticed.

My thinking, however, is that, if we were to loan and, subsequently, lose Laba, it will have come after only seeing him in TFC red for maybe a third of one season; would be nice for us to enjoy his services that bit longer, which, if things go to plan, will only ramp up any potential fee for his future transfer -- win - win.

Laba - Bradley: best midfield pairing in the league, hands down -- and it's not close. Ein Mann könnte träumen.

This is already happening. Decent pay, cheques that won't bounce, good quality of life and acceptable standard of league is making MLS more attractive destination. Few more stories like Montero, using MLS as developing league to Europe, and MLS will get more young talented CA/SA players.

May be trying to groom Wenger into next Conor Casey as a hold up striker in 4-3-3.

As for JackMac, his contract is up this year, and apparently he wants a big payday. Likely test Europe come summer. He's 22 in Aug, so some Euro D2 team should be taking a shot at him.

Is Wenger still on Generation Addidas contract?

Either way McInerney is 2 years younger and has double the professional game experience. He seemed to struggle 2nd half of last season but was off to good start this year.

Don't know what Philly is thinking, maybe tehre was a fallout? Maybe they have some masterplan with Wenger converting him back to a defender or something ???

I personally think Wenger is going to flame out in this league so even the worst case scenario for Montreal (getting the rest of the season with McInerney and then he's gone) is a win for them in my book.

I think Philly thinks they know how to get the best out of Wenger. He has offensive and defensive player awards in college so why the Impact constantly played him as a no. 9 is baffling. If Philly plays a 4-3-3, they may see him out wide or fullback.
Well... Here's the quote from phily:

"[Wenger] is more of a prototypical No. 9 than Jack was or is. That’s where we see him. But he is versatile enough, which we really like. You could put him on the left or right, or drop him into the midfield, and he’d be effective.”

Personally, I just think he's awful. Movement off the ball is horrid and play on it not exceedingly special.

Well I agree with that. Jack Mac can't hold a ball up for shit but that doesn't make Wenger good.

I understand why he is a DP.

But it is a defensive player. Just seems like an odd usage for that slot.

Portland really much feel their back line is suffering in a nearly unfixable way if they are going to sign a DP defender, without some expectation that something is changing soon.

Given that Portland only plays 1 up top, it kinda makes sense. They would then have a spine of Ricketts, Ridgewell, Johnson, Valeri and Adi.

Also, I think their defenders aren't starters in my opinion.

As an Aston Villa supporter, I can confirm what LFC8 says and unless you have 5 or 6 DP slots, Ridgewell is most definitely not a DP. He's a decent defender who served us well until we loaned him to Bournemouth (!) and then sold him to Birmingham. But he was never more than decent. At age 30, you can't even justify his DP status based on age. He has never played at full international level either. Considering that TFC wasn't allowed to sign Olof Mellberg who was a far superior defender and played for Sweden more than 100 times, it's puzzling why MLS would authorise this.

Mellburg had a long career with villa but is much older. Ridgewell is a seasoned EPL defender, under 30 who is versatile and can play cb or fullback. He is technically superior to MLS defenders and left footed. Whether it makes sense to use a DP slot in the back line is still unproven but Portland now has DP investment from front to back with valeri and chara. I am sure Portland is desperate to recover there form from last season and i guess they are hoping that much improved play from the back is the answer.

Orlando in for Robinho too

The Corriere della Sera suggest Orlando City are interested in signing a second Brazilian from Milan this summer - Robinho.
The MLS outfit have just completed a deal to sign Ricky Kaka (http://www.football-italia.net/51372/kaka-%E2%80%98will-always-support-milan%E2%80%99) for the start of the 2015 season, after seeing him exercise a release clause in his Rossonero contract.
On from tentative links at the same time with Robinho, the Corriere della Sera assert more so today that Orlando are also interested in Robinho.
The publication believe that an offer to the 30-year-old could be forthcoming, even if any deal to sign him would involve payment to Milan.
In completing his move earlier this week, Kaka did hint (http://www.football-italia.net/51496/kaka-expects-robinho-mls) at reuniting with his compatriot in the States.

Both Chicago and NER were in the mix. The league negotiated the approx $4 salary for 1.5 years with JJ with a proviso that if he went to NER the wages would be slightly higher. So the MLS World HQ did an envelope draw and NER won.

MLS is so scared to death that teams will run up wages auction style that they put in preventive measures even when they don't have to. Let the league negotiate a mutually agreeable wage/contract length, see who is willing to pay and let the player decide. The limit on DPs is enough to prevent LA/NY/whoever from horning in every time.

It is interesting that Chicago's ownership was willing to pay those kind of wages.

According to MLS.com, Dom Kinnear is leaving Houston and heading back to San Jose. I guess TFC is stuck with Vanney now, since Houston will automatically get the better coach of whoever is available on the market.

That also leaves Watson without a job. Maybe he could become a CMNT assistant under Floro to become a better manager? Lord knows we need more Canadian coaches.
