View Full Version : Friendlies in 2014

Going to call it right now...unless they play it in the SkyDome during the middle of the August 9-16 week, I don't really see how it is possible for TFC to play a friendly this year.

World Cup ends July 13, so I don't see any teams coming within 10 days of the World Cup finishing (and if they do, certainly not with their best players).

Then TFC plays Saturday-Wenesday-Saturday between July 26 and August 2.

Then BMO Field is out on loan to the U-20 Women's World Cup from August 5th until August 16th.

By the time August 20th roles around, most teams would probably be back in Europe with their seasons having already started or starting eminently

...

Since when has that stopped friendlies?

I would be shocked if we don't have at least one against an English team, and like you said, likely at the SkyDome. I'm calling Wed the 13th.

And just to make it more weird, I'm thinking a game against a SA team, in Ottawa on another date, if we get an agreement with the Fury for loans.

We all remember Liverpool friendly vs Liverpool Reserve squad/academy... because a lot of their players played in Euro 2012 and on break

Some Euro clubs do an end-of-season tour at the end of May or early June. Any WC players wouldn't be there, but that won't stop the clubs.

Should also mention, clubs will still be touring/training during the WC. There are all kinds of clubs that will be decent to watch and will have most, if not all, of their roster available.

Without full knowledge of what clubs are coming to the continent next summer, there is no reason to think a friendly can't happen.

Leiweke from 2009 to 2012 (wikipedia only goes back that far) never had a South or Central American team come to LA for a friendly in the summer months. He talks a big game, I think he'd be only after the teams that are on the elite list.

I guess there is always Newell's Old Boys or Argentino Juniors if a paid tour was part of the transfer agreement

Yes teams do take tours after the season is finished, but if TFC were to progress to the final of the Voyageur's Cup, there wouldn't a suitable fixture date for a post-season touring club...I don't it'd be suitable for TFC to be announce a friendly 2 or 3 weeks out in terms of tickets sales etc...

there is a small window for friendlies of which only one weekday period could accommodate a game not played at our home stadium...which might entirely be ruled out should we make it back to CCL anyways

Perhaps with Kevin Payne gone, there is a new line of thinking going on at the club that will put more emphasis on the Canadian Championship and CCL? If that's true, maybe our Canadian Championship games are our "friendlies" for the year.

If that's the case, I'm okay with that.

No way. Tim Leiweke would want friendlies playing against likes of Real Madrid.

Argument was put to me that he is the greatest player of all time because he is the happiest. Hard to argue, I love watching Brazil play for that reason, they look like kids having fun.

It would be interesting to see a top bundesliga side. As long as tfc is using it as a training exercise and the club continues to expand its footballing network to all top leagues it could be a positive event.

Obviously it's a cash grab and those who attend must be sold on opportunity to see different world class sides display their talent and depth.

Of more immediate impact: no preaseason friendlies; we're one of the only teams, maybe the only team, that hasn't announced any yet.

People have said our league runs in sync (or close to it) with the Russian league. Why haven't we looked at them for pre-season friendlies?

MLSE would like to sell tickets ;)

I didn't read 'pre-season'. Sorry. In that case, they need to be in Florida where TFC is training.

what razor said, and travel.

in addition to that, the russian league has been known for acts of hooliganism (the "we'll fucking kill you!" kind), homophobia and racism. in addition to putting butts in seats, you also want to draw positive attention to MLS and TFC.

Liewke loves friendlies, always has. LA had a metric shit ton of them when he was there. To call for, or to expect none is a waste of time and there's no point in whining about the same sh*t year in and year out. It's gonna happen so as Payne famously said, get used to it. All MLS teams do them and that's just how it is.

when you look at our schedule, there isn't exactly a massive hole in it to schedule any

yes Leiweke loves his friendlies, but I think he has also realized that this year's priority is to make the playoffs...why jeopardize that?

Risk it? Well in that case then TFC shouldn't be worry about V-cup and try to make it to CCL either? One game isn't going to hurt anyone especially when you're fielding mostly bench and academy players.

Of course I'd love it if there were no meaningless friendlies this year but with Leiweke's history plus MLS stance of strongly urging teams to I'd say TL couldn't resist pimping a mid-season match.

I'd be surprised if there isn't a lineup of teams trying to fit Bayern in their sched.

To those who feel 'em, enjoy!

Not this guy.

I think we're all well aware of the stance of prioritizing CCL over friendlies. Whether we agree with it or not let's focus on the friendlies themselves.

We have a pretty stacked schedule then. Would be pretty hard to fit one in in July.

Arsenal are looking at the U.S. but I'd imagine Kroenke is gonna do some cross brand stuff between his two clubs first and foremost.

Maybe we could get an Arsenal vs Spurs in Toronto if they are both looking to come to North America.

If not the only time where we (theoretically) could fit a game in is the 23rd but that would just add to a very very congested month.

That seems to be the best idea, I have a feeling TFC versus Europe in friendlies will become less frequent and EUR v EUR will become more common as all of the teams will want to grow their global brands.

seems like the 22nd/23rd of July would be an open date for Spurs...although the galaxy have that date open as well; don't know if tottenham wants to jump out west than east then back central and the galaxy love their mid-season friendlies

Well your suggestion is correct, a friendly between The Reds and Spurs was announced by the Spurs for July 23rd in Toronto, it was mentioned at the end of the release regarding Jerman's transfer.

What's the timeline for not being able to make random predictions after being wrong? 4 months silence? ;)

not completely wrong; based on the date of the friendly it is hard to believe that Tottenham will be traveling with a good chunk of their first team...I initially didn't consider earlier dates because I didn't think TFC would be overly interested in hosting a team without their first team stars
