I thought what we did was post miscellaneous MLS news as individual threads in the TFC/MLS news forum.

I think what you could do is have a daily MLS news thread, and post links akin to how Denime does it for TFC.

I dunno. I don't have a problem for doing it this way, it just seems unnecessary.

Wow. That's big money for a MLS kit right now. And a design refresh to boot. Too bad they're locked in for a decade. If popularity escalates, I hope there is a buyout clause.

In comparison, LA Galaxy sponsorship extension with Herbalife was 10 yrs, 44 mil.

So for a small market team like RSL, 3 mil per year is good money

Like I mentioned in another thread this league has revenue coming in, therefore, there is no excuse for the lower end players only making 35 000 a year this needs to be looked at by the players union, just not right.

From the description: It sounds like the start of a great joke: A minor-league sports executive, one of the richest men in the world, a stand-up comedian, and a Hollywood movie producer conspire to start a soccer team. But what Adrian Hanauer, Paul Allen, Drew Carey, and Joe Roth did when they started the Seattle Sounders FC was no joke. They meticulously planned the launch of the Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise with an eye toward some lofty goals. Then they stood back in amazement as they rocketed far beyond those goals..."

Thanks so much for that link. Terrible it's on BuzzFeed while daily reporters never do long-form journalism.

really enjoyed this paragraph:

MLS’s salary cap is astoundingly low for a league with upwardly mobile aspirations, and as such, there isn’t that much money to go around. Of MLS’s nearly 500 players, 200 make $50,000 or less. When 40% of the league is composed of guys at this level, that’s going to make a difference on the field. While the DP rule will continue to attract big names like Donavan, Keane, Thierry Henry, and Clint Dempsey, the drop-off in quality on teams between the top two or three players and the rest of the squad can be harrowing. Ironically, MLS has begun to look like exactly what it set out to avoid becoming: the NASL.

At first glance, I like this. Another tiny step in the slow build to be the 'hub' of top CONCACAF talent and leap-frogging Liga MX. It obviously starts with recruitment, and even more important, having players in other regions wanting to play here.

Interesting. I suppose there's no question that Johnson is leaving now that Alonso has been given the big pay day.

Not necessarily. They were paying Alonso enough that he could end out counting for less under the cap as a DP, which would leave extra money over for Eddie Johnson.

What it does say is that Mauro Rosales is either out or will have to accept less money in his next contract. Given that they haven't played well without him on the field, he's a good guy for other teams to look at snagging, since Schmid doesn't seem to rate him much compared to Dempsey.

You're probably thinking of the Melberg case, but, I think many have that situation all wrong.

At the time, we technically had JDG, Koevs, Frings and Hassli on the books.. so, MLSFO was reluctant to set a precedent with us looking to bring him in. That said, had it been an Henry-esque signing, I'm sure they'd have gone ahead with it.. but, that's a far different case.

Colorado announces they will not be bringing Jaime Castrillon back next season.

Could be a decent pickup to help bolster TFC's thin CM?

Has tons of Int'l experience (Columbian 1st Div and National Team).
Scored 8 G and 4 A for Colorado in 2012, before missing time in 2013 to injury (basically lost his spot to Dillon Powers by the time he recovered)
Has Domestic Status
Had a very minimal 2013 Cap-Hit of only $46,500

Plus he plays somewhat of a box-to-box style that we know Nelson favours (as opposed to an outright AM).

Could be a good veteran presence to platoon with Osorio, especially if he can regain his 2012 form.

All these coaching and FO changes around the league definitely stirring the player pot. Makes it hard to predict how next season will be, other than Chivas USA, which will still be fucked up as long as Vergara owns it.

Would you have gone for him for that? I hear a lot of people say he's a good defender, but from what I've seen of him he's basically just big and not much else. But has been in the league a long time. Could have been that veteran presence at the back.

I'd pass. Marshall is a stud CB who is strong and good in the air and good organizer of defence. Stock fell a bit after some issues with concussion, and playing under Robert Warcycha who sucks.

For TFC, Chad Marshall at 300k + is a luxury can't afford, with Caldwell doing Marshall's job for cheaper. Plus potential concussion problems.

Molinaro apparently asked that question of Bez and he said no.

It's interesting what City are doing. They are taking Kreis over to the UK to learn how City operates first hand. Like a residency. That kind of knowledge exchange could really be huge.

The way City go through managers, maybe we're the ones learning from them. ZING
It is interesting though. Despite the obvious association here, I wonder if these sorts of partnerships will be promoted/encouraged by MLS or if it'll be "one offs".

NYCFC recently had to postpone a fan voting contest for their new logo when the New York Yankees, part owners of the team, felt that one of the two logos - an in house design, BTW - was too similar to their interlocking NY trademark.

MLS using away goals in two-legged playoff ties this year. Does not apply to extra time of the 2nd leg.

Also, salary cap this year is $3.1 million, max DP budget charge is $387,500 and the Clint Dempsey rule is official: "Designated Players of a certain threshold – as determined by the League – are not subject to allocation ranking".

Also the tiebreaker list order has changed - 1st is still Most Wins but 2nd is now Goal Differential instead of Goals For (now 3rd). There are other changes down the list but rarely do those have to be looked at.

ag futbol

I don't particularly like it. This idea that "it's so hard to score away from home, so that should be the tiebreaker" is totally misplaced. It's also hard to defend on the road, so why not make the first tiebreaker goals conceded away from home?

To me, it looks like someone got the misplaced idea that this would somehow lead to more attractive football and teams would stop parking the bus. It does the exact opposite and you have really stupid situations where a nil-nil draw at home is considered not a half bad result because you didn't give up an away goal. Ridiculous.

Yanks naturally hate anything that is "borrowed" from either Canada or Europe. Or rather, if they feel it is since this isn't exactly "borrowed" from Europe as it is globally with FIFA. As you can see in many comments however, the term "eurosnobism" is being thrown around as that's their perception.

TLDR: The U-S-A! U-S-A! #1 mentality.

The one on the right is good. Either of them are ok. NYCFC has handled this logo PR fairly well, was able to keep things simmering with this, not really much else to talk about for them. Kreis is in Manchester, Reyna is doing whatever he's doing.

The stadium stuff though...ugh. After making so much noise about being the team in the 5 boroughs, they probably will have a temp stadium way out in the burbs. Playing a regular schedule at NYY Stadium was far fetched.

One thing bothers me: it's very conspicuous how these American writers neglect TFC's major influence on MLS 2.0. (it wasn't just building stadiums that changed MLS' culture), or the existence of Vancouver or Montreal (except in the one chart).

Yeah, the Krafts are bad owners. They are also bad for the modern league. They reportedly fought the Designated Player rule, wanting to keep costs as low as possible. The Revs are basically a tax write-off that helps cover empty dates in the Patriot's stadium.

SoccMan2
03-25-2014, 09:51 AM
I would rather they just folded the Revs just so they can take away the franchise from this idiot owner, yes I realize that in the early years without Kraft there might not have been an MLS, however, he does not care about the team or league is just in it for the tax write-off. The Revs hosted the MLS Cup a numbers of years back and they made it to the final and Bob Kraft was not even there. With the league growing they need owners like the ones in K.C. who took over a Revs like franchise and made them one of the best off the field franchises in the league. It's too bad because Boston is such a great city and I think with a new soccer stadium closer to the city Boston could become a Portland a Seattle or another K.C. kind of franchise.

The new logo of New York City FC.

Not bad. One of the better new logos in MLS. I would have made two small changes, though. Firstly, the two pentagons representing the 5 boroughs should be a little bit bigger or perhaps given a small border around them to highlight them just a bit more. Secondly, I'm not really big on the font they used for the NYC text in the middle of the badge. Just a bit too plain for my liking, but it's not terrible by any stretch either. Actually, make it three changes, because I could do with a thinker band of orange on the outside.

Other than that, it's a solid 4 out of 5 as crests go.
