"Major League Soccer team valuations continue to hit record levels and score big returns for long-term investors.

The Hunt Sports Group has just sold the Columbus Crew and the MLS team’s stadium to Anthony Precourt for $68 million. The sale price is a record for an existing team, $11 more than D.C. United were sold for last year..."

Wow. Not fond of Columbus but that is nothing but good news for MLS.

From the article..
The sale of the Crew suggests the $100 million expansion fee paid by Manchester City and the New York Yankees for New York City FC (http://www.nycfc.com/) is not that rich. And the Crew sale also shows how smart David Beckham (http://www.forbes.com/profile/david-beckham/) is. The recently retired (http://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2013/08/01/columbus-crew-sold-by-hunt-sports-group-for-record-68-million/ww.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2325558/David-Beckham-retires-football--world-exclusive.html) icon has the right to buy (http://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2013/05/21/david-beckham-to-earn-huge-windfall-from-new-yorks-mls-expansion/) an MLS franchise for just $25 million.

It's an important development. Club valuations are notional until there is an actual transaction. Since MLS clubs don't change hands very often, that moves the peg for a lot of teams who are clearly in better shape than the Crew.

Beckham has the right to buy a team, put them in a place where people won't show up, and fret about all the money he is losing.

Why he wants to bother I do not know.

Being an owner is a LOT different then being a player or a manager.

I don't why, but I totally forgot all about that. Talk about making a good long-term gamble for him. I wonder if he still has any interest in ownership?

It should be noted that the stadium which is part of the deal, cost 30 million to build, so the team is only worth between 38-58 million. Still not bad.

Will this guy keep the Crew in Columbus? Does MLS allow teams to move?

This shows the anticipated increasing values of TV and sponsorship revenue, as well as revenue sharing from the richer clubs. No way Columbus is worth that much based on attendance alone.
