New England has won 2 in a row against Columbus and DC United. Two weak teams... still better team than TFC and that kid Fagundez is still lighting it up.

Despite coughing up a soft one, Bendik is still #1 for me, though Frei played well in the reserve match. One more bad goal though....
Earnshaw starts pending match fitness, as much as it is tempting to reward Weedman for good game.

Agreed on that lineup. Bendik still gets the start despite his mistake, would be a pretty cold move to drop him for one error after all the good he's done for us (not to mention he made up for it with two greats saves shortly after).

Curious to see how Rey does if he starts, and excited to see Osorio start in the middle.

I think we keep the ball rolling here. Either we come out with a commanding road win for the first time this season or we get a late goal tie. 1-1 tie or 3-1 TFC.

If Earnie and Koevs are still not ready to go id like to see what Weedman can do up top with Brockie. Also gives us a better option on the bench with Braun.

Yeah, I'd give him a start ahead of Braun at this point. Let's see what he can do with extended minutes. He earned it with that goal on Saturday.

He might be better suited coming in later. He seems to have a late game clutch ability, no sense in tiring him early if he's more set to shine at the end.

Let Braun just tire the defenders for at least a half.

Yep...

Thunderstorm over plastic turf.... Keep Koev and Earnie away from this cursed venue....

Have Brockie/Braun wear out their D. Their Gonscalves is good but he's prone to over commit and fouls opponents, yellow or red if Brockie continue doing what he does (not saying Brockie dives, but he often gets in at the right area and not as planted as a target man/power forward (a la, Casey, Lenhart)).

CoachGT
07-30-2013, 11:20 AM
Brockie has created his own problems with the referees. They talk to each other and know he is one of the whiniest players on the pitch if a call doesn't go his way, which pretty much ensures that few calls will ever go his way. Get up, dust yourself off, keep quiet and maybe you'll get the next call, but not if you embarass the ref first.

Hopefully we see a little more of Rey to see what he can do, especially after a week of training with the team. I have a hard time believing that any newcomers will play this weekend, if any do arrive, unless they are already playing in this league.

Once again, given the road history of this team, I don't expect a win and will be happy with a draw. And a clean sheet would be even better. Road goals are hard to come by. And yes, keep Danny K and Earnshaw off the pitch.....

Super
07-30-2013, 12:36 PM
Definitely need to go for the win. That would put us 10 points out of the play-offs, and 3 behind Columbus (depending on other results of course).

It's all about finishing strong at this point. Would be great if we could push and find ourselves 6 points behind in 7-8 games from now. That would make it a bit interesting towards the end.

2-1 TFC WIN! Weedman rolls up the Revs and smokes them up!

Thinking about who I want on the pitch for this match was difficult do you know that our only REAL forwards are...
Weideman, Braun, Emery Welshman.

Go ahead, argue it, our other three are Brockie who returns to his club this month and our two seniors Earnshaw/Koeverman cannot play on plastic pitches and seem to keep picking up injuries.

Start Wiedeman, maybe Mariner was right and he'll prove to be Messi-esque on the pitch.

It's hard to think of the last time an attacker made a run like that finished with a goal, let alone a DM. usually they get nervous and kick the ball too far ahead of themselves, or try to take players on unnecessarily. How refreshing to have a proper footballer like Laba

He couldn't. The lane was closed and Brockie marked until he was offside (except for when he first knocked the ball ahead, but that would be pretty prescient.) He did exactly what he had to.

I still find it annoying that Dan Dunlevy is asking "when Laba is going to get forward more". Entirely missing the point, he's there so other players can concentrate on going forward and he can control the middle of the park defensively.

You'd think they'd want their commentators to educate the fan base rather than create false expectations.

His positional awareness is good. He makes risky decisions and sticks with them, his lanky torso allowing him to get to places some GK's can't. Good hands.

Best of all, good decisions in high pressure situations.

As long as he doesn't have to actually pass the ball. I think tonight we saw why we need Elmer and also just what a shrewd self-awareness Wiedeman has of his own abilities. We should've made more of our breakaways.

Just got back from the game. I'm not usually superstitious but today we did all the same things and drank all the same things and sat in all the same places as we did when we were here for last year's win. Lots of fun to see Laba score off the snap like that, you'd be surprised how quiet a huge stadium like that can get. Pretty sure I'll be back next year and drink all the same things and...

Well done Reds.

+1

That is a classic, grind it out win. The thing is, we don't usually win those. Revs are going out of their minds right now about how they weren't able to complete even one of their chances. Ecks was great but Henry and Morgan played like it means something. I like seeing that. Laba opens his account, I like how he is growing into his midfield boss role. A great away game for us.

but every ball is up the field to the opposition.....would be nice to retain possesion and simply pass it or
kick it to more midfield possession......that contributes to our hunkering in and thinking 'D' the majority of the game because we lose possesion.

exactly...I think he is going to shock us even more....will be TFC's best player ever and may make money on him. He's way ahead of Maurice Edu was when we sold him.......Don't know if we can lock him up , but we better.

Can't believe how Laba is dominating the midfield! He came in full tilt and just stripped that attacker's jock, and then treated the rest of the Revs as if they were pylons! In a match were there were a lot of MOTM candidates from the defensive end, it HAS to be Laba.

It was a good game for the backline (outside of their passing which was horrid) and Laba. Nobody else really did anything special.

We had four shots all game. Two of which where on target from that same sequence of play where Laba scored. The attack really was awful on all levels. Hopefully once Ray hit full fitness and our transfer window is done we won't be so underwhelming.

Anyway, we seemed to make the most of it and get away with our bunkering. But it just goes to show we have a lot to work on up front.

We were not good up front tonight. But I'm happy to see better communication from our back line. With Labba in front of these four we're building from the back forward and that is a much better way to go.

Laba is amazing. Good passer, good decisions, wins every 50/50 ball, intercepts passes all over the field, and he hustles like crazy. It was the 87th minute and this guy was on a full sprint just to stand in front of a Columbus free kick so they couldn't take it quickly. And it turns out he can score too. I love it.

We'd better build a playoff team around him in the next 2-3 years because I don't think we'll be able to hold onto him for much longer than that with the way he's playing. Like someone said earlier, everything JDG was not, and then some.

Well the pluses, one brilliant play by a brilliant player. Laba has made a huge difference to the team. I can't understand how Jason Devos thinks TFC wasted a DP slot for a holding midfielder? Team is looking professional and determined in the last 10 minutes of games. That total panic in the team is gone. Moving O' Dea out was a good move, he was never the CB we were looking for. Also Bendik was very strong in goal.

Still nothing from our strikers, even if we add Max Urruti we still are incredibly thin at that position. Still need to build this area in the off season. Convey did not have a good game tonight. Our wingers, Lambe and Convey are just not strong enough to spread out teams and open up space on the pitch. Neither of them are a scoring threat and the others teams no that.

Laba's goal was a great effort. They looked good in the first 20 minutes. Then we went back to typical TFC and were very lucky not to concede several times. I'll take the win but man was that ugly.

I'm afraid to see the possession stats. We did almost nothing from the 30th minute on.

Nice to steal a road win but there is still a lot to do with this team.

I was convinced NE would be awarded a PK as the match went on - just had this sinking feeling. And of course, as the clocked turned to 80+ mins, I was then convinced we'd concede somehow, either that PK or an OG, or a brainfart...

I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised!

Laba is excellent. Take away the goal even, and his ability to win 50/50 balls, and intercept passes is solid. My big criticism of him so far was when he'd get the ball and have 15/20 free yards, he'd always go back, instead of running the ball forward - well last night he was half the pitch forward and was rewarded with a goal. Hopefully that gives him more confidence to go forward...

Was very happy to see the lads celebrate a victory - and now the downside.

THIS ROMA MATCH IS AT EXACTLY THE WRONG TIME! We win 2 in a row, should of had a week to prep and go for 3 in a row. Instead, a top level Serie A side is going to come in and wipe the floor with us :(

Friendlies in the middle of our season is just plain stupid.

Especially with US Open Cup, ACC, International FIFA dates, and the champions league thrown into the season. The season is busy enough without voluntarily congesting it more.

It makes no fucking sense at all.

If Nelsen is smart, he uses this game as a lesson in humility for players without the requisite work rate or urgency to compete. Start Bekker, show him what talent looks like when you add drive and urgency.

So far, my two preferred picks of Manneh and Hurtado look a lot better than Welshman and Bekker.

This is where the entertainment component of sports-entertainment lies, with an emphasis on pleasing the fans. This game is very important as it will help attract more people to bmo, to mls and ultimately, to tfc. Sticking a bunch of reserves onthe pitch is pure bush league.

Fine.. I'll take loose and pretty. g:D

Really, though, I think our best chance of holding onto Laba is if we keeping tipping him to be on his way to Europe; we all know that no one we hype up ever goes.

We should start a chant for him (to the melody for Ritchie Valens' - La Bamba):

Doo-doo doo-doo (gotta throw in that guitar riff, before repeating) lol

Very lucky to win. On another day, we'd all be bitching about how easily TFC defence got ripped apart esp in 1st half. If not for Laba, NE would have had more chances. Henry had a strong game though. Used his physical strength to hold Simon Phoenixes... urrr... Imbongo and Sene at bay. Made up for terrible showing vs Columbus. And Bendik > Frei

Couldn't pass for shit and only a heads up play by Laba pretty much got the only goal. Just a brutal showing, even if the effort was there. And masterful milking of the clock by TFC. If an opposition team did what TFC did, we'd be up in arms lol

What I'd give to have Fagundez for TFC. That kid was everywhere, and he was playing out of position. Unlucky to get a brace (and lucky for TFC for goal line clearances)

The good thing about this result is that we did it without (I would say) at least 4 of our strongest 11 on paper - Koevs, Earnie, Rey, and Elmar. Add to that hopefully 1 or 2 new signings this week, and you have some reason for optimism.

Two wins in a row. Is the bottom line. If we keep on scraping together points in these last games of the season, it will give me some confidence that perhaps we have the right manager for the job. Clearly we are a long way off, but getting points, particularly wins, is the bottom line, and for all the positives that I saw on the field all seasons, the lack of points took away from them. This team needs to learn to win, and it is slowly learning.
