Took long enough.

Washington Post is reporting that an official announcement will come later today. 20k seater would be just down the street from where the Nationals play.

If any MLS team's fans deserve a nice new stadium, it would be DC's. Finally RFK can be demolished.

Nice looking design. I have roof envy. It just seems to make such a difference.

Great news for them and the league. Stadium looks nice in the renderings.

If everything works out and construction starts, that leaves three existing teams without a soccer-specific stadium:

1. Seattle @ CenturyLink Field (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CenturyLink_Field) (no reason to move, great stadium and 40k attendance average)
2. Vancouver @ BC Place (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BC_Place) (Caps said they would revisit a proper stadium in the future, but not soon)
3. New England @ Gillette Stadium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillette_Stadium) (another club that deserves better)

* San Jose's new stadium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jose_Earthquakes_Stadium) is scheduled to open in 2014

Very nice looking stadium, though again with the shit North American concept to leave one end open (some building there, but doesn't make any difference, the point is there's no seating in one end.)
I'm hailing from Europe, and I hate this concept from the bottom of my heart.

One thing I see with all these new stadiums: nobody believes soccer will become a major sport in US and Canada in the next 20 years, that's why they build stadiums to max 20-22 k capacity, except the biggest cities like NY, LA....
In any country where footy is the main sport, any city with just 300,000 pop has a stadium of around 30,000 capacity. I'm not talking about the countries with the 15 best leagues, just any country which is not considered a third world country.
Of course in US and Canada this may happen just in the next 100 years, if ever, and never to cities with just 300,000 pop, maybe triple of that, lol...

JonO

Hard to tell for sure, but there may actually be seating at the "open" end. The patio looks like it is on the roof of a building, so it's hard to see what's behind it. Also, I am sure these early renderings are "subject to change" ;)

You do know where MLS ranks globally in average attendance, don't you? And most MLS stadiums, like most in Europe, are built with an option to expand later on.

In most of the leagues I believe you are talking about, a couple big teams will have a giant stadium but many others will be comparable to MLS.

Swansea and QPR are too good examples of recent Premier League stadia with the same capacity as MLS.

I had the exact same thought. Good for them though, that monstrous tomb of a stadium they've been using was horrible.

They must be planing on a lot of new development in that area. Right now it's a scrap yard and depots.

And it may not be a full open end they may have a lower seating on the open end with a patio roof

RFK has its character and some great moments for both DCU and the USMNT. The way the stands bounced were quite an experience and I one bizarre walks from the lower level to the upper level, where only the 20 or so TFC supporters were placed, it was all done in the dark. Not a single light was on going up the ramps. But in the end a great moment for me will be the US Centennial match vs. Germany this past June.

Aviva Stadium (opened in 2010) has an open end...

Very limited seating, and giant glass wall for a view of Dublin...

Seats 51,700 even with the open end...

Official announcement was made this morning in DC. Capacity will be anywhere between 20,000 - 25,000 depending on some final decisions.

I like it! Obviously the roof gives it extra marks for me, but I'm digging the overall design. The external façade reminds me of some of the more modern baseball parks in the states. Good job, DC!

Swansea stadium is terrific.....and the city not exactly a world economic giant, but everyone pulled together to get it done. I could only dream of us having anything similar. (and a team the like to go with it)..:)

You're probably right, the people spending the money on stadiums feel that it will be at least twenty years before soccer needs bigger stadiums. Still, this is much better than it was and it's better to slowly build a solid base. When the NFL and AFL merged in the 60s they were so far behind baseball (and even smaller than college football) no one expected it to become the most successful league in the US. Who knows, the same could happen with MLS.

Great for them.. and looking at the area I understand the cost point.. there is an electrical sub station that needs to be moved in order to fit the stadium in the space they want to put it in.

Hiring Populous to do the final design is a great decision in my opinion. Biggest firm around for a reason. For folks who are unfamiliar with the company's name....for years they were known as HOK Sport.

Seems a trend in MLS to go with this firm.

AEG also has a long-standing relationship with them. Here's hoping TL pushes them on MLSE. Nothing against BMO's previous designer - BBB and SCI who are hired by MLSE regularly - but Populous is a step above.

Yes these both looked familiar to me as well but I think braga is a 30,000 seater while national is much smaller in scale (12000?). But in a really cool spot looking over the water. Even the airport runway comes out over the water if I remember. Oddly both clubs and stadiums part of birminghams European adventure a couple seasons ago.

nacionals backdrop definitely hits the mark like many mls stadiums from the first wave of SSS. I guess that is a thing of the past with the focus on roofs although philly's has one of my favourites!

Happy that there is another quality stadium being added, i just wish they could also eliminate all the plastic pitches (3 remaining now).

The Aviva Stadium is an amazing stadium. I've been lucky enough to go there for a soccer game (Man Utd vs An Irish League XI). Obviously a friendly, but it was good fun. DC's new stadium looks like its going to be a beaut, and I will look at heading down to DC for an away game once that is open :)

The limited seating end is because of houses being in the way in a heavily built up area, not because of design choice.

I'd say that right now, the design of the roof is BMO Field's last best option for creating a really good look for the stadium. We can't do much about the stands and administrative buildings - they're already built and I don't see the club investing in a redesign for them. But TFC has a chance now to really make the place look classy by putting up a good, strong, and well-designed roof.

Similar to Chicago. Their Chicago direct is not O'Hare but Midway.

I had a lovely flight earlier this year.

But thanks for the heads up and I'll plan accordingly.
