You don't see it often and when you do you are more likely to blame a hapless goalkeeper or shocking defending, but there is something special about goals being scored directly from corners.
Joining the list of players to have achieved what is a rare occurrence is Diego Forlan after the former Manchester United striker (who could barely net an open goal during his Old Trafford days) scored directly from a set-piece during a Brazilian top flight match.

Good luck Darren.

Best result from the Gold Cup for Canada. Nuff said.

“Darren’s the most expensive player in the whole of the league, in terms of salary cap."

You gotta say, this is a prime example of the stupid mismanagement by Mr. Short-Pants that landed TFC in such a mess cap-wise.

Remember when everyone love Mariner because of how much they disliked Winter?

Doesn't it seem like all the high priced, under producing players were brought in under his watch? While more technical guys are generally missed by supporters (Silva, Soolsma).

^^^ I liked our playing style and philosophy as a club under Winter but I do understand that a change was needed in that role.

It also has become clear that Mariner did not have a clear plan or development model.

Now it seems Nelsen and Payne have one and we have to stick to it and let them gut the team and do it right. If we get nervous now, we are doomed to be kept in this cycle of fail.

I suggest everyone buckle up, hunker down and wait out the storm. Hopefully we will start to see the good stuff soon.

Nuff said.Your up, Benito Floro...It's not like we didn't know the shortcomings of this squad before this tournament - really no surprise how we fared (except losing to Martinique - even I didn't see that one coming). I really hope Floro has some new ideas up his sleeve to breathe some relevance into this team. Even amongst the more die-hard Canadian soccer fans, there was a "ho-hum" attitude towards this tourney, perhaps unlike anything I've ever seen before. And that's sad.

Martinique set the attitude for the rest of the tourney. There was less attention on this Gold Cup because it was Westcentric for Canada. I know SS's and Eddies et al made a showing for the V's in Seattle and Denver.

Main goal was to bring in young players and give them experience playing against CONCACAF teams in a competitive environment. They have accomplished that and we saw some players doing well while others shown they're not ready yet to play in men's national team.

Older players like DeRo aren't going to be playing for us in next WCQ so there was no point of bringing them especially during their season.

If the club had had any foresight at all, they wouldn't have hired Mariner to replace Winter. They should have stuck with the plan Winter was there to implement. If they had actually looked around when they were preparing to fire Winter, they could have found a guy to implement the same playing style. They could have gone after Caleb Porter for example. Instead they did a 180 with Mariner and anything that Winter built was reduced to rubble. What a missed opportunity.

This may be the team that will have to qualify for the next Gold cup. I couldn't blame the decision if it comes to pass. I'd also embrace more games.

Same here as long those games are played on FIFA international dates so we can call in the best players.

If there is any truth to this and Camilo wants to play for Canada you MUST do everything you possibly can to make this happen. Dude is 24, super talented player, has great vision and can take set pieces too. Hurry up and get on this.

STOP WASTING YOU TIME ON LOSERS LIKE HOILETT (and those that were like him see, JDG2, Assmear, etc) AND FIND GUYS THAT LOVE THIS COUNTRY FOR ALL IT IS!!!!!!

The Guardian had a pretty apt description of the TFC-KC match. Scroll down to the bottom:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2013/jul/15/usa-gold-cup-la-galaxy-portland-timbers

I like this line: "Meanwhile, Sporting Kansas City (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/sporting-kansas-city) lives in the real world where the season starts in March and goes through to the end of October."

I liked the philosophy that Winter was brought in under. My greatest disappointment isn't that he was fired, it was that we readily brought in someone who trashed the old play at the first possible chance. We should have kept going down the same path with different people.

The issue wasn't the plan, the issue was implementation. The coaching staff wasn't working together properly and the Dutch contingent readily under estimated the quality of the league.

Hate rehashing old arguments, but, whilst I do agree with what you've written, here, I always feel like one would be remiss not to, in the same breath, mention that it may well not have come to the point where Winter needed removing, were they to have had someone other than Mariner to help him acclimatize to MLS -- at least he wouldn't need to have been removed as soon as he was; I can imagine he might have hit a ceiling, at some point, having carried us as far as he could.. but, I think we could have gotten much more from him (with such a positive attitude, I wouldn't put it past him improving on some of his weaknesses as a head-coach, enough to carry on beyond his contract, having shown that he's flexible, to a point, and open to suggestion; player meetings, during the losing-streak, etc.).

Yup. It was the first time that you ever felt TFC had a plan for the short and long term. If you felt Winter wasn't working out why go the complete opposite direction and not someone who could've continued building on the foundation that was laid.

This is great news... it may a bit of a process to get citizenship, but my hopes is that Camillo and Koffie get that going, and they should be ready to help us get into that hex when qualifying happens... at least we have some time to make this happen. These are the players that deserve our attention, CSA! Camillo and Simpson on the wings would be pretty awesome

Changes in the management team can't be in the cards again anytime soon - we're already past the point where you'd have to thnk twice before coming here on contract. So we will have to hunker down for the time being.

That being said, this management group needs to get together on the same page for a while. There has to be alignment in the front office, including what is being said to the press. We've experienced all that before - Mo says this, player A directly contradicts Mo's comment, and nobody knows what is real. O'Dea says he wants to stay on twitter, but is being told he has to go, Nelsen says he wants to go, and (reportedly) the players find out about the move from the media. Alignment between the parties and of the message shouldn't be this difficult.

Personally, I'm okay with O'Dea's move - more than okay at the price we've been paying for him - but this looks like it took a toll on the team Saturday.

Hopefully we will see some players moving in over the next week to help try and regain a little positive buzz around TFC.

How long will it take them to get their citizenship?

2-3 years. But yes, both Camilo and Koffie have express interest playing for Canadian national team. Also, Ecks could be another player who can be eligible to play for national team in 2-3 years as well.

Winter should never have been hired in the first place. He was completely unfamiliar with MLS, tried to implement a style of play rarely seen in this league, and had no previous head coaching experience. I can't believe that was the best Klinsmann and his agency recommended. I'm still pissed about that. And if he was going to be hired, he needed a better "MLS guy" to help him than Mariner, who held a completely opposite football philosophy and worked to undermine him when things went bad. Another case of mismanagement by Anselmi leading to yet another set back for this franchise. And the dude wanted to be CEO of MLSE, lol.

But Winter was a great guy, and I desperately wanted him to succeed. I wish him and De Klerk could still be working with the academy, they had the right vision about that.

I'm in agreement with you on everything you've said. I, too, desperately wanted him to succeed and thought he was a class act. My post was really just to say IF you're to hire him, Mariner isn't the one to help him familiarize with things in MLS. At the time, we all thought it was a good move, but they could well have given him assurances that he was next in line, which would have soured things, from the jump.

Mariner was very snake-like, as evidenced in many a situations; everything he was saying at the time of the hire was that he has zero ambition to coach, but you would have never guessed it from how he managed things, when at the helm. It's just a real shame, the way things turned out and for the opportunities missed.
