Former TFC assistant Bob de Klerk blames lack of MLS knowledge, unified front office for failurehttp://blogs.canoe.ca/reds/sports/former-tfc-assistant-bob-de-klerk-blames-lack-of-mls-knowledge-unified-front-office-for-failure/#.UdOzwEG6wod.twitter

“When we went to Toronto FC from the Netherlands, we had in the back of our minds our dutch philosophy. We came over here and we didn’t have enough knowledge of MLS and how it was. You have to rely on people about that. Then, you work with people that have another opinion about how to play. That was, in the end, the problem.

^^^ I somehow doubt Klinsmann came up with the idea to have Mariner as the MLS guy, he is the complete opposite of what Winter and De klerk wanted. Or he is just a complete idiot thinking it would work out, I really wish that full list of candidates would have leaked already.

De Klerk then talked tactics while letting listeners in on what he and Winter were thinking before being canned. He also hinted the club’s current regime could use a few more soccer minds in the front office. “We thought it was the best to bring (Eric) Avila, (Joao) Plata and (Luis) Silva to keep them together for a few years and then play the way we wanted to play.
“It’s another philosophy, playing a 4-4-2 and more physical,” he said of Nelsen’s playing style. “It’s a choice, it’s not my choice, but it’s a choice.
“I see some players that left the club. For me, it’s a shame. It would not be my choice.
“Every coach has his own opinion. I don’t want to judge because I think it’s difficult.
“The way (Toronto FC) play at this moment is not my way of playing. Ryan Nelsen could be the right guy, but he needs some people around him.
“I think at a certain moment they need people around them to tell them what they need to do and why they need to do it.”De Klerk, who still lives in Toronto, said he continues to follow TFC closely and would be interested in helping the Canadian youth system develop a standardized program for players coming up through the ranks. “Sounds maybe crazy, but I don’t have any hard feelings. I feel sorry that we could no t succeed in a short period. I think the fans and the people in Toronto deserve a successful organization.”

Can't say that I disagree with any of what BDK says.

It's sad that while he and Winter were tasked to implement their style, they sought the help of people familiar with MLS and all they got was an undermining soccer mind stuck in the 1980's. Mariner should be ashamed of himself.

It's pathetic, really.

Also TFC management for not having the stomach to stick with a major change in playing style.

Very interesting interview with BDK. All makes sense to me.

RE Avila, Plata, Silva: BDK may not be aware that the first two left TFC before the current regime was in charge. Plata in the snafu last summer after Mariner took over. Avila was taken in the re-entry draft at the beginning of December, when Payne was barely here. Certainly the "strategy" for the re-entry draft had already been decided by Mariner & Cochrane beforehand; and Nelsen wasn't here until much later anyway. I also think there was a salary issue with Avila (& Wiedeman and some others who had expiring GA contracts). In the end, Wiedeman agreed to a big salary cut and stayed; Avila didn't agree.

RE Klinsmann & the choice of Mariner: my impression was that Mariner was a candidate before they even brought in Klinsmann. Didn't someone leak that Mariner was the choice of Anselmi & Co -- so when Winter got the top job instead, they figured "oh hey Mariner can be our US-experience guy for Winter's Dutch philosophy" ?

I know that Winter and Mariner interviewed on the same week so unless there is something concreate to point to otherwise, I think its just speculation that something else went down. Always a possiblity I guess.

As for Plata, BDK wanted to keep him and that was his recommendation. We loaned him out and BDK did scouting trips to see him play, along with other players too.

They really did a poor job putting together that front office group. I don't think it takes much of a rocket scientist to see that Paul Mariner was not the MLS guy that should have been paired with a group of people who wanted to play total football. Put it on the list with the thousands of other things Tom Anselmi has screwed up.
