“You’ve seen from the start of the franchise it’s been like a revolving door,” he said, a statement that’s been reiterated time and time again. “You need a lot of players who have been playing together for a long time. If we can get that we’ll be a successful team.”

Cohesion, sure, but what about quality?

Thats when Eckersley can't say they need more quality because it implies that his paycheque is too much for what he brings to the club.

Can't hurt to show our standard as a little higher. Jeremy Hall is about our weakest starting central midfielder now, and he's been playing better this season than Dunfield ever has. Didn't seem too likely he'd get playing time.

I'm always curious what the locker room situation is like, too, who's bitching and who's not, who's perceived that way sometimes unfairly. We never hear much about that stuff ... and then after the season is done we hear there was "a U.S. camp vs. a Canadian camp" or that the manager had a "spy" in the locker room, or some such thing.

Thanks for this memory and a nice chat at the Canada Kit Party, Terry.

Now it looks like he's flying out of this mess. Good Luck.

Didn't seem too likely he'd get playing time. Dunfield's upside is that he's a different type of player than our other midfielders and he can give us a different look...he lacks technical skill, but he was always a hard working who was willing to get stuck-in.

In the past I used to have a bunch of contacts connected to the team and used to hear (and often share!) what I heard was going on. With all of the changes on the team and front office I don't really know anyone any more. But one of my old contacts (who's been away for a couple of years) popped back up recently. He told me about Dunfield, and also put Massimo Ambrosini's name in my ear the other day (I posted that in another thread). I'm not suggesting that Dunfield's leaving paves the way for Ambrosini's arrival, but I think that it's safe to say that TFC are looking for a DP quality CM veteran to guide our young midfielders, lead our team (and maybe setting the locker room?)

We have young midfielders that need to develop and need the playing time, sure, I get that. But isn't it a good idea to keep a player around that can help out with teaching? Someone who's played at many levels and knows what to do and say to younger players to help nurture that growth? Someone who doesn't cost a lot and doesn't take up an international spot??? I'm really kinda scratching my head on this one. I guess it's possible that Terry may have asked for this to see if he can get some playing time on other teams?

This seems to get trotted out every time we have some guy who is near the back-end of his career and meets the definition of chummy.

It's good to have some former players come back as coaches but where do you draw the line? They can't all be good coaches and we can't accommodate everybody. Would we be better off having Carl Robinson on staff as opposed to someone else we have currently for example.

All I'm trying to say is that these staffing decisions eventually boomerang back around in the form of our future results. Considering our track record, I suggest we tread lightly. Outside of Dichio, nobody's service to TFC has been at the level where they instantly deserve to be brought onto staff.

Not good enough, even if he didn't take up an I'ntl roster spot for the U.S. teams, which he would. That leaves Montreal, as it's unlikely Vancouver would pick him up.

Sorry I wasn't implying he be a coach. I'm saying that to keep a depth player like Terry, one who can help our young developing midfielders, it makes sense to use someone with Terry's experience and cost and non-international spot to stay on.

He's an INT spot to US teams, and neither VCWC nor Montreal need his type of player.

Not to talk too negatively about a guy on the day he was waived but....

I don't want Terry Dunfield teaching our young players ANYTHING. We have guys like Koevermans. We had a guy like Frings. Those are mentors. Those are guys that played at legitimate high levels, under legitimate pressure. Terry Dunfield is not an example of a guy that should be imparting his experience on young players.

And if the talk of him being (ANOTHER) former player turned coach, I'll be upset. Why can't we cut ties with guys and be done with them? LOL

If he wants to prolong his career, he could always go back to England, in League 1 or 2 I guess. After all, his wife is from there, I believe.

My other club Oxford are looking for a lot of new players, Dunfield would be a welcome addition there :)

His current wages would put him at League 2 or the upper reaches of the Conference (which are about the same in wages actually).

He'd be good at Conference level actually. If I was Luton, I'd be interested.

It's unfair to look at Dunfield within the context of our team and say that he's washed up. He's a MLS calibre player and will almost certainly stay in this league. If he goes to England, I can't see him joining a League 2 or Conference level team (unless there's some kind of transition into coaching option tied to his contract).

He never stuck as a starter even when Bury was in League Two. And, as several people have noted, he's an international to every non MLS team. I'd put money he won't stick here.

He's very much a lower league player. I don't think he'd start in the championship; maybe league one, but probably not. League two or the conference, he'd do well.

I'm not really commenting on where his talent would place him in the FA structure, just saying that I doubt that he'd go back to back to England for a FL2 or Conference team unless there's some other incentive attached (ie future coaching, pressure from his family etc). If I had to bet, I'd guess that he'll stay in the MLS. Taking up an international slot isn't much of an issue for well managed teams, they don't seem to have the same premium that we place on them because their teams are built differently than ours. International slots are traded pretty liberally without much of significance in return. Just a quick look at the league, there are currently 27 unused international roster slots in the MLS (mind you, 2 belong to Vancouver, so 25 slots that could potentially be used on Dunfield).

I'm not suggesting that Dunfield is a superstar, just that he's a MLS calibre player and would be an upgrade for some teams - maybe not as a starter (although maybe in the right role), maybe for bench depth, to cover for injuries, for Cup games etc. The MLS is a physical league and Dunfield has always shown a willingness to get stuck-in and not shy away from the tough areas of the pitch...he'll be attractive to someone who thinks that he can be useful in the right role.
