Not sure if there's a place for game threads in the new set-up that I missed.

Kick-off: 3 PM, CBC

Game previews:

Official site (http://toronto.fc.mlsnet.com/news/team_news.jsp?ymd=20080717&content_id=173693&vkey=news_t280&fext=.jsp&team=t280):

Toronto FC return back home to BMO Field to take on the San Jose Earthquakes in a key contest for both to keep pace in their respective conferences. TFC are coming off back-to-back losses on the road, running their away losing run to four games, yet could still be tied for third with a win by the end of the weekend.

American Soccer News (http://tfc.american-soccer-news.com/):

Frank Yallop will bring his San Jose Earthquakes side to Toronto on Saturday as the only Canadian manager in Major League Soccer, with Yallop hoping that his knowledge of players like Jim Brennan and Greg Sutton can help him break the club’s undefeated home streak in league action.

CBC better show this in HD seems how they won't let HDNet broadcast the game in CANADA (the only sat. HDNet game not to be shown this year).
A TFC HD feed out there and I can't watch it!

I'd like to make him regret his decision, but I dont think he'll hit the plastic.

So who replaces Edu? Harmse?

Sutton - Brennan, Marshall, Velez, Wynne - Robert, Robinson, Harmse, Ricketts - Ibrahim, Smith

Or does Cunny get a start? I'm guessing the Robert up front and 3 at the back experiment is over?

colman1860

Hoooooold up. Guevara. Hmm. A diamond in the middle, with Robinson defensive and Guevara offensive?

I would think Cunny starts. Carver doesn't want to throw the kid (Kidbrahim) to the wolves, he'll limit his playing time.

I'm guessing they sat Cunny last Saturday because they were close to dealing him. Thy played him Tuesday, so presumably there's no imminent deal?

It does the league no favours interviewing a coach during the game. Could you imagine a top manager in a top league agreeing to do that?
Ridiculous.

Hooligan69

That was a rather unimpressive first 45 minutes.

Lucky Strike
07-19-2008, 03:08 PM
This may be a problem of perspective because I don't get to watch many other MLS games but it seems we always get the short end of the stick with referees. That offside about 8-10 minutes into the game was not offside at all!

*Insert someone beating a dead horse icon here*. But you know it's true.

Unimpressive first half. Brutal set pieces over hit each time, over hit through balls from Guevara, and tons of possession without really moving forward at all.
Some good moments though, and hopefully we'll get it together in the 2nd half.
Isn't this the worst team in the league we're playing?

We have zero creativity in midfield and sorely need a striker who can actually convert.
Playing this formation, with one striker and Guevera as an attacking mid, doesn';t work.

This isn't football, the turf makes for a joke of a game. the ball bounces all over the place.

IBRAHIM isn't the answer for the scoring. We need a real proven striker not a 16 year old. He is good but not that good.

IF ALL OF OUR PLAYERS WERE THAT GOOD WE WOULDNT BE LOSING. MAURICE EDU ISNT GOOD. ROBINSON ISNT A 300,000 player. Cunningham is a fucking joke. Velez isnt good enough.

It really doesn't matter how bad the refs were this game because frankly, TFC shit the bed on this one.

At this rate, Montreal is going to walk all over us.

What a total waste of my time watching that....

Robert was BAD.
They said Cunningham begged Carver to let him take the penalty.

The kid was the bright spot....

But this team belongs to an organization that will count the gate, beer money and laugh at everyone. If they don't sign some talent the fans should boycott the game and stay outside the stadium chanting F*** Management.....

Change has to happen...and this organization has no reason to change as they smile at the profits.....

That's now eight games without a win (including friendlies), if anyone's counting. There's no point in emphasizing how much we needed a result today - against the worst team in the league at that - and of course, we didn't get it.

Today was painful to watch to say the least.

My thoughts on the game:

Ref was as usual... atrocious. I was waiting for Wynne to put his hands around the refs throat and choak the life out of him.
I like what Carver did in subbing in a striker for a mid fielder. They were dominating play all game and had made San Jose's end into their personal sandbox.

Guevara - Bad day at the office. He wanted it so bad it threw him off.
I understand the penalty... didn't want to take any chance of missing right? Understandable.

Roberts - Inspired play. Fought for every ball that came his way and made some brilliant moves. Well done.

Velez - Sloppy sloppy sloppy. You`ve made great strides since the start of the season, let`s not revert to old ways now eh?

Ricketts - Ran his ass off all game and made some nice give and goes. Don`t rush it too much though mate. Might end up on an opposing players foot.

Cunningham - Wanted to take the penalty kick huh? I`d be disappointed in my 9 year daughter if she`d done that. Despicable.

Wynne - A work horse. TFC should sign him to a long term contract ASAP.

Robinson - Good game.

Ibrahim - Great game kid, just don`t be falling down so easy.

At times we seem like some desperate 12 year old newb playing Fifa 08 for the first time crossing aimless ball after aimless ball into the area from the wing without any real purpose or conviction. It's a pathetic display or lack there of, of creativity as a whole.

Just got home from the game and had to vent.
What a disappointment. I'm too dejected to blame the piss-poor officiating (which actually led to our PK being called when it probably shouldn't have been) or the lack of finishing or the questionable play of our team in general or Carver or Cunny or the turf or Mo or the stale popcorn or the myriad other reasons and excuses.
Bottom line is this team needs a recharging and pronto.
To not beat the worst team in the league (to not even score on them) at home is incredibly concerning to me.
A team with our talent should simply be better.
Do I have the answer? Short of someone to put balls in the net and a refresher course on how to push up when we have possession...not really.

An irate Toronto coach John Carver barked at reporters in the post-game news conference when one member of the media suggested his team looked "sluggish."
"Do you think it was sluggish? Do you seriously think it was sluggish?" Carver fumed. "Listen, we threw the kitchen sink at them, they had one shot on goal and that was at the end of the game.
"Their coach came up to me at the end of the game and told me that we dominated."
Carver then turned the tables and asked another journalist what he thought about the game. When the reporter said it was sluggish, Carver replied, "that's because you don't know anything about soccer."
"Every one of my players put in maximum effort, so that's why I'm annoyed when you say it was sluggish. I don't know what's going on. Some of you [reporters] are really negative about this club ... and I'm starting to understand why the hockey team in this city hasn't won anything.
"I wonder if you guys want this team to be successful or not," Carver said.

I remember how the poor officiating ruined the Seoul world cup. Sometimes a team only gets one or two strong scoring chances, so to have them taken away by crap calls, can change the result very easily. TFC dominated the game today, playing in awful conditions (hot and polluted and humid), and had one goal called back when the player was NOT offside, and the other, by a lucky keeper on a penalty. The team played excellent defensively, and should have won. It was a much better effort than the game against New England, and possibly better than last week. But, it would be nice to see a new striker in town (I agree, Huckerby looked worse than Welsh did last year in his first game).

He continued to rant for several minutes but then calmed down and after the tense standoff he spoke at ease and with great humour with several reporters in the locker-room following the news conference.

Well as Jack alluded to there is the douchebag factor... that and MLSE in their infinite wisdom figured it was ok to throw randoms and corporates in the supporter sections.

Would a suit really have the balls to do that?....I guess a drunk suit would....

NOT GOOD ENOUGH. We should have won this match. San Jose was terrible.
Seeing Huckerby, he is awful at this point (probably match fitness issue). It would take minimum 1 month of Winsper to get him into shape. Glad we don't have him.

I noticed an improvement when Cunningham came on, not that he finished anything, but his speed opened things up more. I would have preferred Carver to play him longer, it might have helped.

The flubbed PK was the low of the match, actually the low of the season @ BMO. If it had been stopped by a world-class save, okay, but my son could have put that one in. Canon's goalkeeping wasn't that great (he's seen better days), and the rebound should have been put in, even if the PK was missed.

I can see that the team's play is very oriented to a target-man, with plays out wide and long crosses into the box. With DD out, and Cunningham not the target-man type, the team should play more through the middle.

The team desperately needs to sign a high-end striker, probably DP-quality. Our big disadvantage in trying to bring in someone is not Carver (who is highly respected in Europe), nor Mo (who I think can get the deals done), nor money (MLSE has more than enough, and seems willing to spend it, if media reports are correct) rather our plastic pitch will scare away most EPL, Serie A, and La Ligua players. The city needs to back off on the whole public-use thing and allow it to become a pro-stadium, with grass (not much hope there, but maybe MLSE can pull some strings). The right player would change the whole tenor of the team, and make them play to a higher level, much like Beckham has improved Buddle in LA.

AS usual, the game looked quite different to me on television than it seems to have been perceived by people there. We dominated possession in the second half, created at least a half dozen solid chances and just couldn't finish. We weren't awful, we were....mediocre. Which feels just about the same right now, but really isn't.

One (big) negative point:
-- Carver is wrong about the team not looking slugish. If you watched the play OFF the ball, between whistles etc, very few players were running, there was a lot of walking, a lot of deflation. Robert was jogging between plays all night, as was Ibrahim, and for most part Robbo. And it showed during play that those three players had more energy and drive.

Some positives:
Robert was in a different class tonight. He created half our chances, walked around guys like they weren't there, showed real speed too. I think he really, really wanted to fucking win this game.

Ibrahim showed real poise, smart, smart movement off the ball and some real dangerous touches. Put 20 pounds on him and he's the next Altidore; you can just smell the fucking quality. wonder how long it'll be before some euro club swoops in.

Robinson was much better defensively today than in recent weeks and really, really distributed the ball well.

Some ratings:
Sutton - 6 - Had next to nothing to do, handled one squeaker well.
Wynne - 7 - negated Huckerby, for the most part, who, although looking quite out of shape, was still San Jose's most dangerous player.
Velez - 5 - Was caught out of position several times, goofed two passes in our own end, lucky he didn't cost us a goal.
Marshall - 6- Again, had nothing to do.
Brennan - 6 - Got up field a few times, got a couple of decent crosses in
Ricketts - 5 - Great crosses, lousy decisions. Should've crossed to Ibrahim for an easy tap in but instead tried to take a wide angle around Cannon.
Robinson - 7 - Good distribution, good tackling. Could've been sent off for one of his tackles from behind.
Rosenlund -6 - Acquitted himself decently.
Robert - 8 - Best player on the field by about six miles.
Ibrahim - 7- Created problems for San Jose all night.
Guevara - 4 - Sorry, but all the good gets negated by the two misses that cost TFC the game. A penatly and an open net, and a guy of his quality misses both. He's lucky to get a 4.

Sub
Cunningham - 5 - Did nothing, muffed one chance and collapsed in the box, gets the pussy of the year award for wanting to be given the penalty just so he can score his 100th easily.

Disagree about Cunny and Guevara.

Cunny - If your striker doesn't want to take penalty kicks, you're in trouble. Despite having not scored a goal in a LONG time, it's good that he has the confidence to take the penalty kick. I for one am happy that he wanted to step up and take it.

Guevara - Was one of the few players who stood out in terms of passing and skill. Yes, he missed the penalty and a good chance (although the ball came to him out the blue and he was leaning back - very difficult), I don't think you can give him a 4. He's one of our few players with any class and stands out in this league.

But it just seemed like when someone had the ball, guys went into jog mode and allowed San Jose to get their d settled.

Robinson was guilty of this - when the ball was loose and bouncing, he just stood there and waited for San Jose to pick it up. In his role, he should be pouncing on those and re-gaining posession.

I actually totally agree with the reporter... And i think carver is the one that knows nothing about football if he thinks we dominated the game...
We had more possession of the ball but the possession was in the middle of the field(useless)... and throughout the game the players just tried to get the ball to the box as soon as possible from the middle of the field. The only dangerous chance that we created throughout the whole game was by amado in first half when he put over the cross bar with the net virtually open...beside the penalty there was nothing of danger on the sanjose;s net..

I think a slagish game was a good way to term today;s match...

Interesting notes from Sportsnet:

NOTES: Maurice Edu and Marvell Wynne will be released to play for the US men's national team after the Real Salt Lake game … Carver printed out an email he received from the league outlining how the officials were incorrect in issuing a yellow card to Maurice Edu for diving against Chicago and missed a foul on Amado Guevara that allowed Chicago to take possession and score at the other end of the field … Congrats to whomever vandalized the All-Star decorations in the GO tunnel. You've done us proud.

What a fucking joke. Fucking cunt Guevara misses a penalty brutally, and doesnt follow up on the rebound.

If you arent even going to follow up on the rebound, get the fuck out of Toronto.
The last time a Toronto player missed a penalty and did not follow up was let go a week later. Remember Mr Samuel.

I know a lot of guys like to shit on Robbo, but he was great today. I didn't see one pass go astray and he put in a good day defensively.
The guys in front of him just couldn't finish.

Carver is full of shit. That media story pisses me off. He's clearly trying to deflect attention from the piss poor performance from his players, which is what a good coach should do. But we did NOT throw the kitchen sink at them. The game was played at a stroll, especially in the dying minutes when we SHOULD have thrown the kitchen sink at them. The effort wasn't there, the passion has rarely been there, and it was a shameful performance at home to the worst team in the league. They were sluggish, and Carver knows that. It was a bullshit game from what is looking more and more like a bullshit team.
