"that Saturday's Impact-TFC game could be canceled if snow or freezing rain is forecast"

You got to be kidding me, no wonder so many think soccer players are pussies.

Check the Montreal weather reports for the upcoming forcasts. Nothing worse than harmless scattered flurries expected for the weekend.

Saturday's supposed to be fine. But IF there was a lot of snow and freezing rain, they'd be concerned about the roof at the Big Owe. I'm not worried about it being cancelled.

has absoloutely nothing to do with the soccer players and everything to do with the big O's roof potentially collapsing

It would have to be a foot of snow to cancel it, not 1 mm.

It'll go ahead. Then we sing so loud that we bring the roof down.

Then open the roof? Is that possible with that type of roof?

On second thought maybe they should cancel considering this is quebec after all, the province with the worst bridge, roads etc.

Seriously though whats the point of a roof if you cant hold an event if the weather turns bad? Who the hell designed a roof that people need to fear a collapse if snow falls etc.

^ Richard may be a bit late to the game. This has been talked about for a couple of years. There's been worries a couple of times in previous years when the weather was potentially much worse in Montreal.

Since the title of the original article was
"Montreal Impact official: No chance Olympic Stadium roof will force rivalry game cancellation"

I don't think we need to be worried. We got to Montreal today, the weather is great, and looks good enough for the next few days as well.

As the guys from Montreal mention in the article -- yes it's embarrassing that the roof isn't reliable in very bad weather. This should be fixed but it won't be easy considering all the other problems with this stadium. A third attempt at a working roof is now in discussion but who knows if it ever happens. Here's a nice overview of the roof problems & other issues: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Stadium_(Montreal)#Continuing_problems

The Big Owe didn't get its name for nothing. Note that various other stadia in various countries have also had problems with their roof, but the Olympic Stadium is one of the worst when you look at the total list of issues. Plus the place is 37 years old now... (Then again, building the "National Soccer Stadium" with uninsulated pipes & washrooms; flimsy aluminum structure exposed to the elements, dangerous in bad winter weather, & originally w/o locking nuts; lack of drainage on the concourses; and many other issues -- all of that built in the year 2006 -- that's pretty bad too... At least BMO Field didn't blow as big a whole in public budgets as the Skydome and the Olympic Stadium.)

EDIT BTW the Skydome only narrowly escaped a massive roof failure itself. A problem was noticed late during construction. Could have been devastating if something hadn't failed early so that the problem was noticed before it was way too late. They did some of the follow-up testing at the UofT Civil Engineering structural labs. I'll post the info if I find it.

They're scared of a little cold, impact, impact
They whine like they are 3 years old, impact, impact
We'll drink their women and steal their beer
The next miracle, is almost here.
TORONTO FC, Montreal's our Bitch!

As long as these guys stay away from the O the roof should be alright.

Does anyone have a contruction helmet I can borrow? If the Norb decides to put the G'n'f'n'R on those massive headphones we may be in big f'n trouble...

The Olympic Stadium roof has been a cause for concern ever since the opening ceremony of the 1976 Summer Olympics when, amazingly, it had yet to be installed. Numerous attempts to build a permanent solution have systematically failed, most spectacularly in January 1999 when the roof collapsed, leaving snow crashing down on an auto show inside the stadium

How Canada ever got another Olympics after Montreal pig-f*cked the '76 games like an blind old man on Viagra with one-leg is beyond me!

They're probably more concerned the upper deck with thousands of TFC fans jumping collapses then the roof - but they're not going to start that panic!

If the roof collaspes and kills me, I will be really mad.

Great idea. Combine the 2- Cheap toy construction helmet with a G 'n R sticker on it front and centre!

I'm sure if we all held our hands up, we could hold it up until the game is finished, at least.
